Course The Voice Department within the Malta School of Music is proud to present - the Singers Artistic Tool Box 2018 (SATB 2018) which will be held on the 6th, 7th and 8th April 2018. SATB 2018 will take place at the newly refurbished Poulenc Room situated in the Main Hall Block and in Rm 004 at the Malta School of Music in Hamrun. A central location with free parking accessibility. This is a course aimed at Classical Voice soloists / choristers of varying ages interested in furthering their holistic skills on stage. It will introduce and develop 5 disciplines from the singer s point of view. Singers will have to possibility to work with Opera Singer Tatiana Lisnic, conductor Michael Laus, Pilates Instructor Sarah Jane Zrinzo, choreographer Dorian Mallia and make-up artist Jackie Grima. Each session would involve theoretical and practical aspects. Extra individual sessions of 45 minutes duration could also be booked with Tatiana Lisnic, Sarah Jane Zrinzo, Dorian Mallia and Jackie Grima against an extra fee upon applying for the course. Programme Friday 6th April 2018 Tatiana Lisnic - Opera singer Bel canto principles: Theory to practice Breathing, projection, placement, expressing singing and a general approach on how to study music score. Poulenc Room, Main Hall Block at the Malta School of Music, Hamrun. 16.00-19.00hrs Saturday 7th th April 2018 Michael Laus - Conductor Singing Opera: A Conductor's Perspective. In this session, Mro Laus will discuss the collaboration between conductor and singers during the rehearsal period of an opera production. Tempos, articulation, phrasing and other matters of style will be discussed, with examples from operas by Mozart and Verdi. In the second part of the session, he will work with some of the participants in order to demonstrate how the issues discussed can be put in practice. Biographies TATIANA LISNIC Tatiana Lisnic was born in Cobalea / Moldavia. After finishing the Music-School in Chisinau, she received her diploma at the Music-Academy G. Dima in Cluj / Romania and continued her studies with Alida Ferrarini in Italy. Tatiana Lisnic made 1998 her stage-debut at the Opera House in Cluj as Nedda / Pagliacci, followed by Ilia / Idomeneo. First with the Herbert von Karajan Scholarship, then as member of the ensemble and starting with 2003 as permanent guest, she sung at the Vienna State Opera: Adina in L elisir d amore, Susanna (NP Le nozze di Figaro, with R. Muti), Lauretta ( Gianni Schicchi ) and Nanetta (NP Falstaff, with F. Luisi). Under the baton of famous conductors, Tatiana Lisnic appears on the most important opera stages: Scala di Milano and Ravenna Festival (2002 Le nozze di Figaro R. Muti MICHAEL LAUS Michael Laus graduated in piano, harpsichord, composition, and conducting at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi of Milan in 1982. He later participated in master classes in conducting given by George Manahan in the United States and Vladimir Delman in Bologna. Principal Conductor of Malta s national orchestra for twenty-five years and now its Resident Conductor, he has conducted the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra in symphonic concerts both in Malta s main concert venues and on tour in Belgium and Italy. He has conducted several opera productions which include the Mozart/Da Ponte trilogy, Die Zauberflöte, L Elisir d amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, Rigoletto, La Traviata, Otello, Falstaff, La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Gianni Schicchi, Roméo et Juliette, Werther, Pagliacci and L amico Fritz. His performed repertoire includes the major symphonies of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Handel s Messiah, the Mozart and Verdi Requiems, Jenkins Mass for Peace and other works from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries with several first performances of works by contemporary composers.

In July, 2016, he conducted the first European performance of Arvo Pärt s Greater Antiphons and in November 2016 he conducted a highly acclaimed performance of Verdi s Requiem. He was the founder and first music director of the Malta Youth Orchestra. He opened the first edition of the Valletta International Baroque Festival with Vivaldi s Quattro stagioni together with Carmine Lauri, and the second edition with Handel s Messiah. Other soloists with whom he has collaborated include Katia Ricciarelli, Cecilia Gasdia, Joseph Calleja, Brigitte Engerer and Andrea Griminelli, while he also works regularly with his wife, the soprano Miriam Gauci. Michael Laus has guest-conducted prestigious orchestras such as the Bournemouth Symphony, the Slovak Philharmonic, the New Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Asturias, the Berne Symphony Orchestra, L Orchestra Sinfonica di Pesaro, the Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moldavian Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared as music director in operatic productions at the Berne State Theatre and in Oviedo. He regularly appears in the double role of pianist/harpsichordist and conductor in a concerto repertoire ranging from baroque to twentieth-century works. In this double role, he has won international critical acclaim for his recording of Cyril Scott s Harpsichord Concerto. In July 2016, he gave the first performance in Europe of Arvo Pärt s Greater Antiphons for Strings, at St John s Co-cathedral and in the presence of the composer. Michael Laus has recorded works for the piano and orchestra as well as orchestral music on CD, which have been released on Discover International, Unicorn-Khanchana and Cameo Classics labels. He has appeared on Rai 3, France 3 and Mezzo television channels. He is Associate Professor in Music Studies at the University of Malta, and is the founder and director of the Goldberg Ensemble, a choral and instrumental group specializing in the performance of baroque music. Sarah Jane made her professional debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in La Traviata, directed by Sir Richard Eyre in 2009 and subsequently danced in the production for the next 5 years, including a season touring and performing in Japan. Her other professional performing experiences include; London Eye 4D, spanish dancer for Stella Mann's DVD, female vocals for Philip Bloom's Embryo - A Concept Album and as Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street at The Radlett Theatre. In 2013 she completed her Body Control Level 3 Pilates qualification and has recently attended the Pilates for Dancers course at the APPI, London. Her Pilates teaching experience in London includes; Gymbox, 37 Degrees, and the London Studio Centre. Her earlier training started in Malta, at the Tanya Bayona Princess Poutiatine Academy of Ballet. At 17, she won a scholarship to the London Studio Centre where she went on to study at The Margaret Howard Theatre College. She took up a 3 year teacher training and performance Diploma, graduating with distinction and was awarded her CDE in Imperial ballet, Modern Dance and FDI in Tap Dance. Sarah Jane has taught many genres of dance at various schools in London and Malta. Some of which include; The Rona Hart School of Dance, The Chelsea Ballet School, Montessori, Lucy Lovick Dance School and The Margaret Howard theatre college. Locally, she has taught for BGB school of Dance, Stagecoach & Energize Summer Club.

Since moving back to Malta, Sarah Jane has become part of the Teaching Faculty at The Dance Conservatoire. She also recently set up her own Pilates Studio Seven Steps which is based in San Pawl Tat Targa. DORIAN MALLIA Dorian Mallia is the Founder/ Artistic Director of Moveo Dance Company and a dance practitioner/scholar. He graduated from Central School of Ballet (London), where he obtained a degree in professional dance and performance, and pursued a Master degree in Performing Studies (Dance) at the University of Malta. Before proceeding to the CSB, he attended the JCDC, Malta, Urdang Academy, Covent Garden, London and the Hungary State Academy. He has performed at top international venues with companies including European Ballet in the UK, RBR Dance Company in Verona (Italy), LaMov Compania de Danza (Spain), Paganini Dance Company in Rome and Mavinkhoodance (Singapore) to mention a few. In 2008 he set up Move Dance Company, whose repertoire has been performed locally as well as internationally including Germany, Czech Republic, UK, Italy, Spain and U.S. Dorian gave company classes at the RBR Dance Company in Verona, Random Dance Company and ZfinMalta. He gave Master classes in Blanid International Dance Events, Introduction to Movement at the International Vocal Masterclasses Ventspils, Latvia, Danzart Festival, Ragusa, Italy, Contemporary Master Classes at Unfold Motion, Romania and Moveo Shine partnering workshops, Malta. As a scholar Dorian started lecturing in 2012 as a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Malta (School of Performing Arts) and 2016 as Part-time Lecturer at MCAST. He was Head of Ballet and Contemporary at the Dance Project for 4 years. In 2016 Dorian was invited to give a lecture demonstration about his research at the University of Chichester (UK). After placing 1 st at the Central Trust Award in 2006, Dorian choreographed for Design for Dance and his work was performed at the Bloomsbury Theatre (London). Dorian has choreographed for Dance Works (Malta), Mavinkhoodance (London), Third Row Dance Company (London), Opening Ceremony of CHOGM, Malta International Arts Festival and various commissions and events performed by Moveo Dance Company. His work includes: Carmen, Blooming Creatures, Tfaljla Tal- Ghonella, One Funny Ballet, The Other Door -What s wrong, Why not!?, SeeQuatic, MindSet, Echo, U-turn, Three Monkeys, Official opening of Smart City, Official opening of CHOGM with the presence of her Royal Highness Queen Elisabeth, Official opening of the Presidency, Inauguration of The George Cross with the presence of his Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh, V18 opening ceremony to mention a few. Some of the work was performed in London, Bruno, U.S, Prague, Malta and Italy. Dorian is currently nominated as Best Artist of the Year by the Arts Council Malta. JACKIE GRIMA Jackie has been working in the film and stage makeup field as well as a beauty therapist for the last 30 years, with the last 28 years as owner manager of her own beauty salon. She has been directly involved in a very wide range of makeup assignments for both local and foreign commercial agencies. Other projects have ranged from TV series to Shakespearean plays and Operas, both locally and abroad. Jackie also provides publicity makeup for Maltese and foreign singers in diverse roles. She has extensive experience in makeup design and application for period / contemporary films and docudramas.
