The Cooser Carold Nunez, a native o Texas, received his Bachelor o Music Coosition and Master o Music Education degrees rom the University o North Texas. Ater 9 years in the Texas Public Schools, Mr. Nunez retired as Director o the Denton High School Orchestra and Coordinator o Orchestras in the Denton Indeendent School District. In 989, the Texas Orchestra Directors Association resented Mr. Nunez with the Texas Orchestra Director o the Year Award. In addition to being active in the Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Orchestra Directors Association, he has also been a member o ASTA with NSOA and MENC. Presently, Mr. Nunez resides in Denton, Texas, where he is a roessional cooser, ianist, and continues his close association with music education as a clinician and adjudicator. Mr. Nunez has numerous string orchestra works and Uni-Tunes, an elementary-level sulementary method, ublished by the Neil A. Kjos Music Coany. String Orchestra works include Aache, Chater One, Convergence, Diversity, Festival, Little Syhony, Introsection, Relexions, Suite or Strings, The Texians, and The View From Hubble. Full Orchestra coositions include Tejas, the 999 TODA Coosition Contest Co-Winner. The Coosition In 006, I was invited to adjudicate the Florida State Music Perormance Assessment. The event aorded me the oortunity to hear many talented student orchestras, a roduct o the high level o teaching in the Florida schools. Ater this rewarding exerience, I was commissioned by the Florida Orchestra Association to write a middle schoollevel coosition or their 007 convention. When contelating the commission, I chose to base the new work on one o Florida s most unique and beautiul areas, the Everglades. The Glades is geared or the technical ability o any good middle school orchestra. There are some altered ingerings but the iece is mostly in st osition. In addition, main themes are built on areggios and scales. A unique oint about the coosition: ater each theme is stated, it is immediately reeated in a neighboring key. Beginning at measure 30 in the middle o The Glades, the violas and cellos lay the melody in a contrasting cantabile section, ollowed by the violins. A develoment section ollows, leading to a urioso theme built on areggios and scales taken rom the exosition. This iery gesture makes or an exciting conclusion. 3 Learning Bank: The Everglades The Everglades are a vast troical and subtroical wilderness area in southern Florida. Known as the River o Grass, the redominant natural eature o the area is the huge sawgrass marsh that stretches or over a hundred miles down the eninsula. Troical hardwood orests, swas, and mangrove coastal areas also contribute to the diverse landscae o the Everglades. The abundance o water in this unique ecosystem makes or a stunning variety o animal residents, rom its 350 native bird secies to American alligators and crocodiles, manatees, and the rare Florida anther.
