April 2018 Virginia Lassiter Leadership Luncheon The 2nd Annual Virginia Lassiter Leadership Luncheon begins at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 14 at the Episcopal Church Parrish Hall, 221 S. 4th Street, Lake Wales. This luncheon honors the late Virginia Lassiter's lifelong dedication to the Lake Wales Public Library. As one of the founders of the Lake Wales Library Association in 1954, Jita spearheaded the effort to provide publicly funded library services to residents of Lake Wales. The 2018 Virginia Lassiter Leadership Luncheon will feature a panel discussion with three local leaders in Lake Wales' agri-business field, Ellis Hunt, Jr., Cary Lightsey and Emil Jahna, Jr. The three Lake Waleans will discuss the history and economic impact of their businesses on our city. Polk County's Historic Preservation Manager, Myrtice Young will serve as moderator for the program. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at the Lake Wales Public Library. All proceeds from this luncheon will benefit the Lake Wales Library Association - Friends of the Library. For information call 678-4005.

Mrs. Schultz will display her photography. Our Local Artist Gallery is open during regular library hours. Cabinet of Curiosity The Lake Wales Museum has created the Cabinet of Curiosity in our main lobby. The Cabinet of Curiosity contains examples of unusual items from the Museum's collection and our local history. New items will rotate into the Cabinet of Curiosity each month. Be sure to view this unusual collection from the Lake Wales Museum.

National Library Week The Lake Wales Public Library & Polk County Library Cooperative's Bookmobile and BMail services will celebrate National Library Week, April 8-14. National Library Week is a celebration of libraries of all types and the services they perform for everyone. Spring Food for Fines is back. Celebrate National Library Week by participating in our Spring Food for Fines. A donation of five non-perishable food items will 'pay' overdue fines. All food collected will be provided to the Lake Wales Care Center's Food Pantry. Spring Food for Fines begins April 9 and concludes April 21. Through a partnership with Orlando's WonderWorks we will award tickets to WonderWorks to anyone who signs up for a new Polk Co. Library Cooperative library card between April 9-14. This will be available at the Lake Wales Public Library and the PCLC Bookmobile. This complimentary ticket is good for admission in 2018. Call 678-4005 for details on what is required to apply for a Polk Co. Library Cooperative library card at our library and the Bookmobile. National Bookmobile Day - April 11th The Lake Wales Public Library is honored to operate the mobile branch library service, Polk Co. Library Cooperative Bookmobile. We will celebrate National Bookmobile Day on Wednesday, April 11. The regularly scheduled stop that day is at Lake Ashton's Clubhouse, Lake Wales. This stop is open to the public. There will be prizes, gifts and giveaways to celebrate National Bookmobile Day! Don't miss the opportunity to celebrate the Polk Co. Library Coop's mobile branch library. Preservation Week We are so proud of the commitment the Lake Wales Public Library and Lake Wales Museum have made to preserve our city's rich heritage. The American Library Association's Preservation Week is celebrated April 22-28. The LWPL and LWM will celebrate our focus on preservation with two free classes. On Tuesday, April 24, 10 a.m. the Lake Wales Public Library will present Basic Book Repair. Registered participants will learn the basics of book repair, tightening bindings, proper paper repair and what NOT to do when repairing books. Each registered participant will receive a basic repair kit. Registration is required, seats are limited. Call 678-4005, ext. 221 or visit the library's front desk to register. Our "sister' department, the Lake Wales Museum will present Be Your Own Curator. Thursday, April 26, 12 noon - 1 pm. Learn how to care for, store and organize your personal documents and photographs to make your family memories last. Bring examples of personal items you want to preserve. We will discuss proper storage of digital photographs. Call 676-1759 to register. Please bring your own brown bag lunch for this important Lunch 'n Learn workshop.
