ORCHESTRAL SEASON 2018/19 Box Office 01604 624811 www.royalandderngate.co.uk

2 Box Office 01604 624811 I www.royalandderngate.co.uk WELCOME FROM ROYAL & DERNGATE We are delighted to be announcing our new Orchestral Season for 2018/19. Our partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the cornerstones of our yearly programme and we are proud to have collaborated once more with them to develop a season for everyone to enjoy. We truly believe that Royal & Derngate should be accessible to everyone in our community and we therefore extend a particularly warm welcome to those experiencing the power of orchestral music for the first time through our ballet, rock and prom concerts. Royal & Derngate is going from strength to strength, with more audience members than ever before attending a broad range of live performances, events and films. We are especially proud that our work nurturing the creativity of our community continues to make a substantial impact. Last year more than 26,000 young people took part in Creative Learning, youth theatre and outreach programmes at the theatre and throughout the County. However, just 13% of the theatres income is from public funding (considerably less than comparable organisations), so your ongoing support is vital in ensuring that we are able to support future artists and develop future audiences. We therefore urge you to consider making a gift-aided donation to Royal & Derngate when you book your subscription ticket this season. We look forward to welcoming you back and thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to welcoming you. Martin Sutherland Chief Executive, Royal & Derngate www.royalandderngate.co.uk @royalderngate /royalandderngate WELCOME FROM THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA It is with great pleasure that I introduce this forthcoming Orchestral Season at our Northampton resident home, Royal & Derngate. With greater variety than ever, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra looks forward immensely to performing powerful, poignant and impressive symphonic works that are central to the classical repertoire, alongside lighter programmes including Symphonic Rock and Last Night Of The Proms. Prior to A Night At The Ballet in June, we would be delighted if you were able to join us for Meet The Musicians. Our players have some brilliant tales to tell, and this free, informal event offers the opportunity to chat with our musicians and find out more about life within the RPO. Thank you for your continuing support and enthusiasm, we hope you enjoy the season ahead! James Williams Managing Director, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra www.rpo.co.uk @RPOonline /RoyalPhilharmonicOrchestra

Technically taxing and richly melodic, Chopin s masterpiece blends rippling virtuosity, Polish dance rhythms and lyricism. One of Sibelius most engaging and beautiful compositions, his Symphony No.2 evokes the expansive, glacial landscape of his native Finland. From an anguished slow movement to a finale of furious passion, this piece climaxes in a flourish of exhilarating heroism.

Next up is another of Hungary s greatest composers, with Liszt s First Piano Concerto. Listen out for the twinkling triangle during the Scherzo, the skittish opening and richly romantic ending. The opening fanfare of Tchaikovsky s Fourth Symphony follows with fierceness and anguish alongside luscious melodies and swelling optimism. This is a work that will stir the senses.

9 THE COLOURS OF MOZART SUN 17 FEBRUARY 2019 7.30PM Mozart Divertimento in D major, K.136 Mozart Clarinet Concerto Mozart Requiem Conductor Adrian Partington Clarinet Katherine Lacy Soprano Ellie Laugharne Mezzo-soprano Rebecca Afonwy-Jones Tenor Ji Hyun Kim Baritone Morgan Pearse Northampton Bach Choir An evening celebrating the musical genius of Mozart with a programme that shows off the different colours of his popular style. Mozart s light and energetic Divertimento introduces our next work, the famous Clarinet Concerto performed by the RPO s Principal Clarinet Katherine Lacy. This cheery and graceful work often appears in the top 10 of Classic FM s Hall of Fame and is a true household favourite. Mozart s Requiem shows a different, darker side to his writing in this powerful yet poignant masterpiece sung by the Northampton Bach Choir.
