Select Press For SEA FOG (HAEMOO) Crisp, starkly beautiful compositions, contrasting claustrophobic human activity with the ocean s vastness Maggie Lee, Variety Never in a million years would someone be able to watch this film for the first time and guess that it s a debut feature. So assured is the direction, so purposeful is the camera Nikola Grazdanovic, The Playlist Director Shim Sung-bo savors the gorgeous oceanic vistas as well as the contrastingly quotidian details of the living arrangements aboard Kang's boat. Chuck Bowen, Slant Magazine [Shim] shows a remarkably assured hand behind the camera. He handles the film s sharp tonal shifts with ease, and with the help of cinematographer Hong Kyeong-pyo sustains an eerie mood once the thick sea fog envelops the boat and its surroundings C. J. Prince, Way Too Indie While the film is expertly made, all its visual thrills are present to serve the characters and their complexly interwoven moral trajectories film's greatest strength lies in its cast. Pierce Conran, Twitch Film SEA FOG (HAEMOO) is a terrific tentpole, and one like no other. Pierce Conran, Twitch Film Moving, thrilling, unpredictable, morally complex, and just plain entertaining. Phil Brown, Collider On the whole, piercing in its unraveling of character, assured in its direction and pacing, it is a thrilling Korean blockbuster in the best sense of the terms. Rowena Santos Aquino, Next Projection It provides ample excitement and never fails to keep the audience off balance with unexpected plot lurches amidst perilous sea fog. Ben Nicholson, CineVue 2

FULL SYNOPSIS Captain Kang, long time captain of Junjin, is disheartened when he learns the boat s owner has sold it, leaving his entire crew in danger of losing their livelihood. Swallowing his pride as a once venerated sea captain, Kang pays a visit to human trafficking broker Yeo and decides to take on a dangerous job smuggling illegal migrants into South Korea. Unaware of the Captain s intentions, the crew is thrust into the world of smuggling. The Junjin arrives at the coordinates in the middle of a rainstorm. While most of the migrants from the Chinese vessel make it across, a young woman named Hong Mae hesitates and then falls short of the Junjin and plunges into the sea. She begins to lose consciousness in the pitchblack ocean when Dong-sik dives into the water to rescue her, defying Captain Kang s orders. She shares her story with him while the other migrants shiver on the open deck. Forced to stall in open waters for another day, Captain Kang is driven to quell the unrest of the migrants by violently assaulting them. Hong-mae asks Dong-sik to save her fellow passengers, and Dong-sik throws himself in front of the captain to stop the savage beating. As tensions build, a dense sea fog envelops the boat, and tragedy unfolds in the mysterious depths of the fog. Based on a true story. SHORT SYNOPSIS Visually arresting, SEA FOG (HAEMOO) ( Sea Fog ) is the story of a group of fisherman who are driven into madness when their attempt to smuggle illegal Chinese-Korean immigrants goes horribly wrong. Facing decommissioning after a lackluster fishing season, Kang (Kim Yoon-seok), the longtime captain of the Junjin, turns to the human trafficking trade. But with a crew of naïve fisherman, including engineer Wan-Ho (Moon Sung-Keun from IN ANOTHER COUNTRY), and young deckhand Dong-sik (K-Pop singer Park Yu-chun), Captain Kang is driven to the edge by mounting complications and unrest. Then the boat stalls, tensions rise, and a mysterious fog envelopes the Junjin - sparking greed, cruelty and psychosis aboard. LOGLINE Based on true events, SEA FOG (HAEMOO) is the story of a group of fishermen who are driven into madness when their attempt to smuggle illegal migrants ends in a horrible tragedy. DIRECTOR S BIOGRAPHY One of the most noted screenwriters in Korea, Shim Sung-bo is best known for the 2003 film Memories of Murder, which he co-wrote with the film s director Bong Joon-ho. The film garnered numerous awards including the Best Screenplay Award at Korea Film Awards. SEA FOG (HAEMOO) is his directorial debut and was produced by Bong Joon-ho, Cho Neung-yeon, and Lewis Taewan Kim. Director s Statement SEA FOG (HAEMOO) is a story that is completely unpredictable from beginning to end. Whether by his own mistakes or through outside forces, there comes a time in a man s life when he is confronted with losing everything he has. What would be the most important thing to a man whose future has been confiscated? That is the question I constantly asked myself while making the film, and that is what SEA FOG (HAEMOO) represents. In each of the characters in SEA FOG (HAEMOO), good and evil coexist and manifest themselves differently in different situations. I wanted to study how human beings react and reveal their true nature in unpredictable circumstances.
