Norms: classes and categories The IEEE 802.3an Protocol for the Ethernet data transmission at 10 Gigabit/s requires a bandwidth of 500 MHz, for which today the cabling specifications are defined at international and European level. It should be emphasized that the requirements specified in the corresponding American standard EIA/TIA (definition of Cat 6A) differ from the international (ISO/IEC) and European (EN) ones. The latter, in fact, besides being more restrictive, defines the cabling from 100 to 1000MHz on the basis of the Classes of application, rather than on Categories: Class D (up to 100 MHz) Class E (up to 250 MHz) Class E A (up to 500 MHz): suitable for transmissions up to 10 Gigabit/s Class F (up to 600 MHz) Class F A (up to 1000 MHz):suitable for transmissions up to 40 and 100 Gigabit/s At the international and European level, to define a cabling system it is necessary to specify, through the Classes, the requirements of the channel and permanent links in their entirety, while using the categories you define the requirements of the individual component (jack, patch cords, cable). This allows a clear distinction between SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS and COMPONENTS REQUIREMENTS. All standards have chosen to use the word "Augmented, which is attached to Category 6, both as capital letter A for TIA/EIA and as a subscript A for ISO/IEC and CENELEC. The ISO/IEC and EN standards require NEXT values up to 3 db higher on connectors and patch cords, compared to the Cat.6A. At 500 MHz, a difference of 3 db is equivalent to 30% performance increase. Consequently, it is imperative to distinguish the category 6 Augmented regulated in the United States from that ruled at International and European level, where jacks, patch cords and cables refer to a new Cat.6 A. 11
