RESURGENCE Coosed or Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band 'Brass in Concert' 2016 By Sam Fisher Resurgence (rom the Latin resurgam), meaning I shall rise again, is a descritive coosition that tells the tale o the city o London rising rom the ashes, ollowing the great ire o 1666. The music is resented in three clearly deined sections, Devastation, Rebuilding and New London. Devastation This section o the music reresents the atermath o the ire: the rumbling o burning embers and ghostly, haunting voices o those who lost their lives; the twisted clangs o broken church bells and the echoes that ring across the vast, oen land where the vibrant city once stood. It is during this section that we begin to see grous o musical notes that reresent numbers associated with the historic acts: churches rebuilt (including St. Paul s Cathedral), shown in grous o s and s across the band. 6 recorded deaths, highlighted by the shock notes in the ercussion and 2nd/rd Cornets rom bar 41. These numeric reerences continue throughout the iece. Rebuilding From the devastation, we begin to hear sounds o rebuilding and reconstruction. The hammering o wood, metal and concrete; the develoment o new structures that were to become the city we see today. We begin to hear the chorale o hoe (bar 1), which becomes the basis o the inal movement o the coosition. Although we continue to hear ghostly reerences (bar 4), they are now becoming less rominent as we advance through the music, the overall sound becoming more and more ositive. At bar 9, the chimes o Westminster begin to reaear within a disguised chord in the Trombones, ollowed by the horns. Percussive sounds continue to lead the reconstruction and eature beneath the hoeul chorale rom bar 67. The amiliar Oranges and Lemons melody is heard in a celebratory anare moti at bars 70 and 78, reerring to the church o St. Clements (rebuilt by Sir Christoher Wren along with 1 other arish churches and, o course, St Paul s). The inal lourishing anare at bar 8 leads us majestically into New London. New London There is a sense o arrival and celebration as we reach New London. Sile bell accents are heard, moving through this anare section, into the inal lourish o busy London rom bar 101 to the end o the iece. London s Burning, the chimes o Westminster and London Bridge can all be heard, interwoven with one another, alongside the grous o and we have heard beore (rom bar 101). Organ textures eature rom bar 12, in celebration o the reconstruction o St Paul s and the bell sounds continue to eature right u to the eeling bells in the inal ew bars.
