II. INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFICATIONS BEFORE USING THE 4-AD STIMULUS ISOLATION AMPLIFIER, READ THIS INSTRUCTION MANUAL. INITIAL INSTALLATION: The 4-AD SIU comes fully adjused and ready o use. Before powering he uni on, open he baery cover and verify ha he baeries have remained seaed during shipping. Insrucions for opening he baery cover are on he back panel of he SIU. Descripion The MODEL 4-AD Simulus Isolaion Amplifier (SIU) is a low-noise opical isolaion amplifier designed o opically isolae elecrical simulaing currens. Is oupu can be eiher proporional o an analog inpu or gaed by a digial inpu. I is sand alone or rack mouned, and is powered by 20 inernal 9V alkaline baeries. The uni operaes wih ZERO leakage curren, high compliance (100VDC), baery es funcion (indicaes good baeries), high lineariy in analog inpu mode, large oupu dynamic range, fas sep response, and biphasic oupu. III. CONTROLS Inpus: The inpu mode is eiher analog or digial. In he analog mode, he oupu is direcly proporional o he ampliude of he inpu volage signal. Analog Inpu range is 0-10V and he gain from he Inpu o he Oupu is adjused via roary swich. A +/- swich allows negaion of inpu volages. Digial inpu is TTL and CMOS compaible. Logic Low is 0V and logic High is 5V. Boh inpus are isolaed BNCs and he mode (Analog or Digial) is selecable wih a oggle swich on he fron panel. Refer appendix A for ransfer funcions. Oupu: Oupu is eiher a curren source or a volage source (se by a oggle swich). Therefore uni operaes as a Volage Conrolled Curren Source (VCCS) or a Volage Conrolled Volage Source (VCVS). The oupu polariy can be se o allow biphasic operaion. Oupu connecor is an isolaed BNC and he mode (curren or volage), along wih he polariy (+ or -) is selecable wih a oggle swich on he fron panel. Refer appendix A for ransfer funcions. Range: Oupu ranges are 0-0.01mA, 0-0.1mA, 0-1mA or 0-10mA. This range is se from a roary swich on he fron panel. In Analog mode he inpu range is 0-10V and he oupu is direcly proporional o he inpu volage. e.g. when range is 0-1mA, an inpu sine wave whose peak o peak volage ranges from 0-6V will produce an oupu curren sine wave of 0-0.6mA. In he Digial mode he oupu is scaled wih he 10-urn Magniude po on he fron panel. The value of he po reflecs he value of he oupu curren when a digial pulse is applied. For example, when he range is 0-1mA and he po is se a 6 urns he oupu curren will be 0.6mA during he ime ha he digial inpu is a a "high" logic level. There are corresponding volage ranges on he range swich. These range seings are used when he oupu mode is volage (when he mode oggle swich near he oupu is se o VOL). Using he same example as above; when range is 0-5V, an inpu sine wave whose peak o peak volage ranges from 0-6V will produce an oupu volage sine wave of 0-6V (0.6 x 5V range). Magniude: The Magniude knob scales he oupu ampliude beween he minimum and maximum value of he range seing when he uni is se o digial inpu mode. The knobs scale reads from 0 o 10. For example, wih he magniude knob is se o 5.0, he oupu mode se o curren, he range se o 0-0.1mA, and he inpu mode se o digial, hen a 5V TTL signal applied o he digial inpu will produce a 0.05 ma oupu. The knob has no funcion when he inpu mode is analog. Oupu Mode Swich: 6

Oupu mode can be a Curren or a Volage. See "Oupu" and "Range" for more deails. Oupu Polariy: Oupu Polariy can be posiive, negaive or off (polariy of curren or volage ou). In he 'off' posiion he oupu is shored o preven charge build up in he elecrode and can also be used o preven "power-on" spikes a he oupu when he uni's ON/OFF power is cycled. e.g. urn Oupu Polariy swich o OFF posiion, hen power uni on, hen se Oupu Polariy o desired polariy. This will preven spikes a oupu which can damage cells. Being able o se he oupu polariy allows for biphasic operaion in he digial mode (see appendix for exac I/O characerisics). Power: Powered by 20 9Vol alkaline baeries. A baery es buon on he fron panel ells you when o change he baery. Press buon, if LED urns on he baeries are good, if no hen replace he baeries. Replace baeries by removing he lid on op of he uni, pull ou he old baeries and inser new ones. Baery Tes: Pushing he baery es swich simulaes a load on he baeries and he LED will ligh indicaing good baeries. If he he LED doesn' ligh you need o change he baeries. See hp://www.geinginsrumens.com/baerylife.hml for deailed analysis of baery life including ypical baery life. Power: Always se he polariy swich o OFF before powering he uni on or off. The uni is powered by 9 Vol alkaline baeries. A baery es buon on he fron panel ells you when o change he baery. Press buon, if LED urns on he baeries are good, if no replace. Baery replacemen insrucions are on rear of SIU. Hin: wih uni facing you, removal seems o be easier if you roae he baeries clockwise ou of he sockes. You will need o sar from he righ. Duracel baeries are no recommended because very large variances in heir physical dimensions may cause problems wih heir fi in he baery carrier. We recommend Energizer Alkaline or Panasonic Alkaline. Appendix A I/O characerisics (ransfer funcions) for he Analog Mode and he Digial Mode Noe 1; oupus in he ransfer funcion can be a curren or a volage depending on he oupu mode swich (CUR/VOL). When Full Range is referenced his corresponds o he curren or he volage he Range swich is se oo. e.g. Range = 1mA/5V and Modeswich = CUR he oupu "full range" is 1mA. If he Mode-swich = VOL he ourpu full range is 5V. Noe 2; muliple isolaion unis can be sacked in parallel o obain funcional operaion in muliple quadrans. i.e. he ransfer funcions can be added. 8
