THE PREMIERS PLANS FESTIVAL Dedicating itself to the discovery of new talent in European cinema and allowing others to discover European film heritage since 1989, the Angers Premiers Plans Festival has become an emblematic cultural meeting that is recognized by film professionals, followed by a large inquisitive audience, and supported by many big names. THE AIMS OF FESTIVAL To convey new European directors through a selection of a hundred first films presented in seven competitive sections. To discover film history and heritage thanks to retrospectives on national cinematographies, tributes to major and unrecognized authors and actors, programs on specific themes. Highlighting the diversity of European cinema by gathering professionals on questions relative to the production and circulation of European films. To educate a new public on European cinema by favoring the young public to participate to the Festival To support scriptwriters and directors in their writing work by inviting professional actors to read scripts of first short and feature films in public before shooting the film. TRIBUTES AND RETROSPECTIVES John Boorman Seeing the films of John Boorman means exploring the great diversity of universes and genres. From science fiction (Zardoz) to the legendary mediaeval epic (Excalibur), from the Californian film noir (Point Blank) to the story of a child living through the blitz (Hope and Glory), John Boorman has developed a fascinating, protean body of work, punctuated with cult films (Deliverance, The Emerald Forest), films which are audacious, sometimes mystical, and spectacularly inhabited by nature and wonder. Marcello Mastroianni For half a century, Italian actor par excellence Marcello Mastroianni worked with a vast majority of the greatest filmmakers of his native country, playing characters from Italian comedy, along dramatic, heroic and whimsical characters who have marked the collective memory. Good Work! Work has always been a source of inspiration for filmmakers interested in joint creation or individual action, collective struggle or individual achievement. The situations depicted provide as many human portraits and stories as there are sensitivities and filmmakers. The fight against injustice with Ken Loach, alienation with Chaplin, changes in the rural world with Raymond Depardon or the brutal effects of globalisation with Kiyoshi Kurosawa will illustrate this retrospective. Denis Lavant After Isabelle Carré and Jacques Gamblin, this year Denis Lavant will be the guest of Premiers Plans and the Nouveau Théâtre d Angers. He will perform Louis-Ferdinand Céline on stage and will present several films, notably by Leos Carax, for whom he remains a recurring and iconic actor. The site of a unique residency for writing for animated film, the Abbaye de Fontevraud will be presenting a selection of short films it has supported. 11
