6th Grade Pre-AP Summer Reading In preparation for 6 th grade Pre-AP ELA, please select and read one of the following novels: Hidden by Helen Frost Schooled by Gordon Korman The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis As you read over the summer, you will keep several logs (Diction Detective, Bridge Builder, Reporter Logs) which will assist you in your 1st 6 weeks of 6th Grade Pre-AP ELA. You will be given two options is which to keep your logs: Use the graphic organizer provided Be sure to complete in its entirety. Google Document in the Summer Reading Google Classroom Open your gmail account & click Google Classroom You will join the class--dm2mbtd Here you will find duplicates of this information. There is an assignment for each of the 3 written logs. You will need to click on the assignment for that particular log (Diction Detective, Bridge Builder, & Reporter) to access your Google Document to add and complete that log. Be sure to change the filename of the Google Document to YOUR NAME. The Artist/Illustrator assignment you may use the form provided or use your own paper to complete it.

Diction Detective Your job is to carefully examine the diction (word choice) in the novel. Search for phrases and passages that are especially descriptive, powerful, funny, thought-provoking, surprising, or even confusing. Complete the graphic organizer below on the selected phrases or passages. You will complete a total of SIX Diction Detectives passages/quotes. Bridge Builder Your job is to build bridges between the events of the book and other people, places, or events in school, the community, or your own life. Look for connections between the text, yourself, other texts, and the world. Also, make connections between what has happened before and what might happen as the narrative continues. Look for the characters internal and external conflicts and the ways that these conflicts influence their actions. You will complete ONE event & connection for each type of connection. Predict what you think will happen..

Reporter Your job is to identify and report on the key points of the novel. Make a list or write a summary that describes how the writer develops the setting, plot, and characters in the book. Like that of a newspaper reporter, your report must be concise, yet thorough. Setting (Tell us about changes in the setting or mood that seem significant.) Plot (What are the major events that occurred.)

Characters (How do the characters change and interact with each other, and how characters have changed from the beginning to the end of the novel.) Artist/Illustrator Your job is to create a DETAILED illustration related to the reading. It can be a drawing, cartoon, diagram, flowchart, or other depiction. You can choose to illustrate a scene, an idea, a symbol, or a character. Consider how to use COLOR in your illustration for effect. WRITE a reflection on the back of the drawing that explains your graphic, symbolic connections, or connections between images and the literature.
