His Alter Egos Eminem, Slim Shady, and Marshall. They are all the same person, but they all have a different personality. Eminem said, Eminem is the well-known, nice, popular one. Slim Shady is the crazy offensive mean guy. Marshall is the baby, wimpy me. He was born with the name Marshall Mathers. His initials were MM so he thought of Eminem. He said, One day I was sitting on the toilet (literally), and I was thinking, I thought of the name Slim Shady. I ran out of the bathroom and I wrote it down. I called my friend Dr. Dre and told him about the name I thought of. He said it was perfect and, well, that s now my favorite stage name.
The History of Rap and Hip Hop Rap, means a lot of things to different people. One definition of it is that it s, A spoken word poetry that goes along with a beat. But, it s much more than that to rappers like Eminem who use their rhymes to tell people what life is like in tough neighborhoods ( the hood ). Many people think that rap came from a Jamaican genre of music called toasting, which is a series of rhyming chants to a beat, made by stomping feet. Others think that rap came from Hip Hop. Most people think that Hip Hop was created by DJ s playing different beats, and a singer doing a song (mostly rhyming) to the beat (this originated in block parties located in the South Bronx, NY). Like rap other people think that it originated from Jamaican toasting. Rap and Hip Hop also took a big role with inventing break dancing and graffiti.
Music Rhymes & Lyrics Eminem is widely known in the rap world for his ability to rhyme to a beat without practicing it, and being a famous rapper that is white. His lyrics are a big part of his music, too. They are harsh words, messages and rhymes pushed together into lyrics and versus. He has many songs and albums that won many Grammies, including best album of the year. All of Eminem s albums have gone platinum, double platinum, triple platinum, etc. etc. (platinum means the singer sells 1 million copies). All of his song/albums have been successful, but some of them were controversial because some people thought such a young singer couldn t release such explicit music.
Messages Most of Eminem s messages are about a white kid growing up in a black neighborhood, and in a tough family. His dad left the family when Eminem was just two months old and his mom was a drug user who abused him. Those are some of the reasons Eminem s messages are crazy and dark, but true. His first album the Infinite caused a huge controversy. There were dirty lines, swearing, and very offensive messages in the lyrics. In his second album the Slim Shady LP he toned it down a little, but it was still very offensive. In his third album the Marshall Mathers LP it got a lot better, and it was more appropriate than the previous two albums. Over the years of his career, he has been changing his messages in his lyrics to more broken heart stuff.
DJ s Deejaying is a complex art of music made by beat juggling, scratching, and improvising on the turntables. Clive Campbell was responsible for inventing and bringing deejaying to America. DJ s and turntables played a huge role in inventing rap and hip-hop in 1980. The turntables are normally two discs connected to a small metal table. There are a series of knobs to control the volume, pitch, the bass, the beat, and fader.
Life as a Star Eminem s life as a star is easier than his childhood, but still isn t easy. He got married to Kim Scott in 1999, and they had their first daughter, Hailie Jade Mathers. They got divorced in 2001, and remarried 2006. Three months later they got divorced again. At age 39 Eminem currently lives in a mansion located in central Michigan.
Life at Home When Marshall was young, life was not easy being a white kid in a black neighborhood. He was often teased and bullied for being white. His dad left him with his mom who was not supportive for him. Marshall would never live in the same house for more than 7 months. Eminem said, It felt like I was always moving, I never had a real home to live in. He went from a trailer park in Detroit to Kansas City almost twice a year.
