Relatively Speaking About the Playwright Alan Ayckbourn is an Olivier and Tony Award winning playwright who has written 79 plays, more than half of which have been produced in London s West End as well as around the world. As an acclaimed director, he has worked extensively in the West End and has also run his own company at the National Theatre. Between 1972 and 2009, he was the Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, where the majority of his work has been premiered. Synopsis This play is written in the best tradition of a British bedroom farce (and this playwright has actually written another comedy called the Bedroom Farce)... and here we have Ginny who is going to marry Greg but first must tell her older former employer that the affair they were having must end. To cover herself, she tells Greg she is going to see her parents. Alas Greg begins to get suspicious and decides to get there first. A comedy of errors ensues when he arrives at the supposed home of the parents and the former employer pretends he is her father. However, his wife also suspects something is going on! Setting The play takes place in the rockin 1960s at a flat in London and a country house in Buckinghamshire There will be one 15-minute intermission. Please turn off all cell phones, pagers and things that go beep in the night. No photography or recording devices allowed. Director s Notes Having two locations to deal with is always a challenge, at the same time it has been a lot of laughs. My thanks to the cast and crew who have worked diligently to bring it all together. This is a typical British farce so you know that there will be some huge mix ups and cross talk. My advice is to sit back and try to imagine yourself in their situation and see how they struggle trying to understand each other... Here is a young girl pretending her ex-lover is her father and a woman she has never met is her mother and a complete stranger asking someone he thinks is the father, for the hand of a daughter he doesn t actually have. Confused yet? Well, laugh along at their awkward predicaments and only hope for a happy ending. Mike Jarvis Page 2
