Relatively Speaking About the Playwright Alan Ayckbourn is an Olivier and Tony Award winning playwright who has written 79 plays, more than half of which have been produced in London s West End as well as around the world. As an acclaimed director, he has worked extensively in the West End and has also run his own company at the National Theatre. Between 1972 and 2009, he was the Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, where the majority of his work has been premiered. Synopsis This play is written in the best tradition of a British bedroom farce (and this playwright has actually written another comedy called the Bedroom Farce)... and here we have Ginny who is going to marry Greg but first must tell her older former employer that the affair they were having must end. To cover herself, she tells Greg she is going to see her parents. Alas Greg begins to get suspicious and decides to get there first. A comedy of errors ensues when he arrives at the supposed home of the parents and the former employer pretends he is her father. However, his wife also suspects something is going on! Setting The play takes place in the rockin 1960s at a flat in London and a country house in Buckinghamshire There will be one 15-minute intermission. Please turn off all cell phones, pagers and things that go beep in the night. No photography or recording devices allowed. Director s Notes Having two locations to deal with is always a challenge, at the same time it has been a lot of laughs. My thanks to the cast and crew who have worked diligently to bring it all together. This is a typical British farce so you know that there will be some huge mix ups and cross talk. My advice is to sit back and try to imagine yourself in their situation and see how they struggle trying to understand each other... Here is a young girl pretending her ex-lover is her father and a woman she has never met is her mother and a complete stranger asking someone he thinks is the father, for the hand of a daughter he doesn t actually have. Confused yet? Well, laugh along at their awkward predicaments and only hope for a happy ending. Mike Jarvis Page 2

Bios Mike Jarvis ~ Director ~ Mike started directing in 1991 with Journey s End and since has directed pantos, dramas, comedies and cabaret. He says directing gives one the chance to actually feel they are playing all the parts, as together with the actors you work in rehearsal on formulating the character they are playing, at the same time you don t have to remember any lines. He hopes you enjoy the results of the work all the actors have put in and can laugh as much as we did putting it together. Bob Bradley ~ Stage Manager & Set Designer ~ Bob truly is a seasoned theatre person of many parts. After successfully directing The Dragon of Wantley he pops up here again as Stage Manager. As an indispensable man of all trades, he even turns his hand to a bit of Set Designing for this latest production! Glen Miller ~ Producer & Lighting Designer ~ Glen is an experienced Production Manager as well as being the Lighting Designer for over 200 productions in Toronto, London, Atlanta and Vancouver. Glen is currently the Resident Lighting Designer for Deep Cove Stage Society & Lighting Designer for this current Production. He is Past President of Deep Cove Stage Society and is the current Technical Director for DCSS. Glen is also the President of Theatre BC The Cast Alex Ross ~ Greg ~ Alex is very pleased to be here performing at Deep Cove. Most recently, he played the round, sirloin, short loin and flank sections of a cow in the North Vancouver Players Christmas pantomime Sleeping Beauty and Terry in Deep Cove Stage s Shady Business. He would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to his parents, without whom life would be impossible. He would also like to thank you, without whom this show would be impossible. See us at the TBC Festival! Relatively Speaking is Deep Cove Stage Society s entry in Theatre BC s North Shore Zone Festival. Come and support our production on May 3rd, at Presentation House, and check out the entire festival. Page 4

Bios Carolyn Yonge ~ Ginny ~ Carolyn, a triplet born in Calgary, moved with her family to Indonesia when she was four. She discovered acting in 1997 after watching Flipper; her interest in story telling developed in theatre and film-making. Moving back to Canada, she began drama classes in school, joined three community theatre groups and performed in many plays and community events. She was accepted to the William Davis Centre for Actors Study in Vancouver and is now with Anthony Meindl Actors Workshop. She had a role in No Men Beyond This Point, that debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival (now has international release). She is in pre-production on a short film about WWII s most notorious female snipers. She hopes to join the Vancouver Theatre Sports League. Sarah Harlow ~ Sheila ~ Sarah is thrilled to be included in this talented cast of Relatively Speaking. Some career highlights include Variety Club Show of Hearts opening ceremony, A&E s Twisted Sister, other selections include LA Web Festival Ivy Tower, Vancouver Web Festival Ariel Erisian, Vancouver Queer Film Festival Cure(d), Vancouver Fringe Festival Dear Life, You ve Got Male, Fowlie & Friends Variety Show, When the Cat s Away (Deep Cove Stage Society) and films How It Is, Chris and Worm, Fox, Coyote. When Sarah is not treading the boards, she can be found harmonizing with fellow choir mates at Sing City and/or Top Line Vocal Collective or herding kids, a dog and a guinea pig. Malcolm Stead ~ Phillip ~ Born under a wandering tulip, Malcolm was raised by a wandering goat herd in the outer reaches of Bristol, UK. Venturing the planet on the back of his Moose, Malc happened upon a small expensive hamlet known as Vancouver to its local inhabitants.
