Bealtaine is a time to celebrate creativity in older age. The Bealtaine Festival is a National Programme run throughout May each year in association with Age and Opportunity and all over the country older persons groups and individuals are actively involved in Arts events, workshops and activities. North and South Tipperary County Council Arts Services and Tipperary Libraries are co-ordinating a festival together to develop a Bealtaine Programme across the whole county. Most events are free and open to the public. Taking its name from the ancient Celtic festival celebrating springtime, Bealtaine celebrates renewal, creativity and growth in ageing. Tá fáilte roimh cách páirt a ghlacadh i ceiliúradh na Féile Bealtaine. 2

Festival Launch To celebrate the launch of the Tipperary Bealtaine Festival 2010, South and North Tipperary County Council Arts Services and Tipperary Libraries are hosting an event at The Source Library & Arts Centre, Thurles on 4th May at 2.30pm. We are delighted to announce that Catherine Rose, CEO Age and Opportunity will officiate at this year s festivities. This year s event is celebrated with a performance by The Pre- Madonnas who are mezzo soprano Liz Ryan and soprano Mary Flaherty with Aoife O Sullivan on piano, and together they present a delectable programme of arias and duets from composers such as Verdi, Mozart, Bellini, Delibes and Handel, as well as operatta and victorian songs, and comedy sketches. All presented with Charm! Panache! and no radio mikes. 3

Writing Workshops by Vincent McDonnell Vincent McDonnell has published nine novels for adults and children, three works of non-fiction, over fifty short stories and hundreds of articles and other writings. He has been writer in residence for Co. Limerick (twice), Co. Cork and the Munster Literature Centre, and has conducted creative writing workshops at literary festivals all over Ireland. He has taught a fiction course at the University of Limerick, and is at present fiction workshop facilitator at the Munster Literature Centre. He has written for radio, edited numerous anthologies and adjudicated many literary prizes. In 2009 he was the Irish judge for the Frank O Connor International Short Story Prize, the richest award in the world for a collection. In 2010 his latest non-fiction book, based on the Catalpa rescue, will be published. 4

South Tipperary Dance Residency Holistic Workshop Kneading our dreams by artist Brigid Teehan Rediscover the art of calligraphy with Frances Breen South Tipperary County Arts Service is currently working in partnership with Tipperary Excel to develop a dance residency in the county. Dancers in residence Jazmin Chiodi and Alexandre Iseli have been working with schools and community groups, holding dance classes and workshops. As part of the residency, Jazmin and Alexandre will present a day of workshops at Tipperary Excel and will be working with the Cashel Active Retirement Group. Through the medium of dance the groups will explore how to put less effort and strain on muscles structures, with insights into relieving physical tensions and tiredness. Based on Jamin s and Alexandre s experience of dance, Alexander technique and yoga, they will achieve this in a playful way, through games and exercises. A series of workshops led by Clonmel-based artist Brigid Teehan will offer participants of the Day Care Centre in Irish town and St. Anthony s Ward, Clonmel an opportunity to explore sculptural forms using dough. The theme of dreams will be a starting point. Natural spices such as ground cloves or cinnamon can be added to the dough for an extra sensory dimension. During the process of kneading and shaping the dough participants can decide to allow shapes to emerge or follow an idea to make a shape that has meaning for them. These workshops are designed for older people, staff and any visiting family members of both, the Day Care Centre and St. Anthony s Ward, Clonmel. Thanks to The Friends of St. Anthony s for their assistance and support. Frances Breen, graduate of the National College of Art and Design studied calligraphy and bookbinding in Austria and Germany. Frances will hold a series of workshops using the more traditional techniques of calligraphy as well as the more experimental usage. In the Traditional workshops - you will use special calligraphy pens to learn the Italic and/or Irish styles. These styles are close to handwriting and can be used in many ways for special occasions. An Experimental Calligraphy workshop will use hand made pens and watercolour, experimenting with single letters to allow freedom to discover movement and rhythm of calligraphy. Using watercolour you can explore the subtle changes in colour which will create atmosphere. 5

The Pre Madonnas In the days before Madonna and Kylie, there were two girls with Real Voices, who sang Real Music. The years have passed and these two girls are now...slightly older girls, grown wiser, sexier, more attractive with limitless supplies of talent, known as The Pre-Madonnas, who are mezzo soprano Liz Ryan and soprano Mary Flaherty with Aoife O Sullivan on piano, and together they present a delectable programme of arias and duets from composers such as Verdi, Mozart, Bellini, Delibes and Handel, as well as operatta and Victorian songs, and comedy sketches. All presented with Charm! Panache! and no radio mikes. 6 The mood and style ebbed and flowed, with duets from the likes of Cosi fan tutte and La Traviata rubbing musical shoulders with the likes of the Victorian classic Whispering Hope and I m gonna wash that man right out of my hair from South Pacific. Fil Campbell - Old Songs and Get Creative - Arts and Crafts Workshops Night at the Musicals The Butterfly Company Presenter and singer of the successful Songbirds TV show and concert, Co. Fermanagh born singer Fil Campbell continues her quest to keep alive the songs that were so popular and so widely sung between the 1930s and 60s by singers like Mary O Hara and Bridie Gallagher. In this year s show Fil presents a collection of songs that range from the sophisticated repertoire of Mary O Hara to the fun loving music of Bridie Gallagher. With her beautiful voice and accompanied by her regular musicians, Brendan Emmett and Tom McFarland, Fil breathes new life into songs like the Bonny Boy, Down by the Green Bushes, the Hills of Glenswilly, Kitty from Coleraine and My Lagan Love to name but a few. And of course many of the songs from the Songbirds show will still be included like The Spinning Wheel, Goodbye Mick and The Castle of Dromore. Celebrate your creativity with Tipperary Libraries by joining in one of our many arts and crafts workshops. Workshops are available in several disciplines including painting, lace making and card making. There is something for everyone. These workshops are informal introductory sessions, nothing too serious but enjoyment is guaranteed. Tipperary Libraries branches across the County of Tipperary have been running these kind of events for many years with great success. The attraction for many people is that these workshops are free and informal. So if you fancy learning more about the arts and crafts detailed in this brochure, simply pop into your local library or contact one of our friendly staff for details. South Tipperary County Arts Service are delighted to welcome The Butterfly Company who will present to Cashel Day Care Centre and Carrick on Suir Day Care Centre a tribute to the world s greatest musicals. Following the success of The Butterfly Company s two sellout tours of the Cinderella Pantomime and Ceoilte, The Butterfly Company is proud to announce its upcoming production A Night at the Musicals. From the streets of London s West End to New York s Broadway this is a sure treat for all staff and residents. Expect all musical favourites such as Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Joseph, Les Miserables, The Lion King, My Fair Lady, Starlight Express, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, Mamma Mia & much, much more... 7

Drawing Studies: A Celebration Marking Creativity in Later Life at the National Gallery of Ireland The exhibition DRAWING STUDIES: A CELEBRATION is an exhibition of adult work, reflecting their studies in the National Gallery of Ireland. The resulting drawings are symptomatic of the joy and creativity that occurs when people of all ages engage with the collections of a museum or gallery. The exhibition showcases the extraordinary range of work that people in later life create when motivated. DRAWING STUDIES: A CELEBRATION is not a fanfare show - it is constructed along simple lines with the clear aim of representing a cross-section of the work of students in the oldest art form: drawing. As some of the participants commented: As a result of the Drawing Studies course, I found that I looked at paintings which I might have passed by before. In addition I grew to understand the works in a new and different way after spending time drawing from them. Image: A Study of A Girl Standing, Eva Kieran Reserved National Gallery of Ireland Comprising 26 works, DRAWING STUDIES: A CELEBRATION is touring to venues all over Ireland and is accompanied by a 48 page full colour catalogue. 8

Over 55 s Photography Competition Reminiscence in the County Musuem National Gallery Talks Image: Aoife Goodman, A Study from La Rose du Ciel, Cassis Reserved National Gallery of Ireland On the run up to the Tipperary Bealtaine Festival 2010, Tipperary Libraries ran an over 55s Photography Competition kindly sponsored by PHOTOSTATION. The countywide winner will be presented with their prize at the launch of the Festival on the 4th May at 2.30pm in The Source Arts and Library Centre, Thurles. Winning and selected photographs from the competition will be displayed in the public libraries across Tipperary during the month of May. Active Retirement Groups and Individuals are invited along to South Tipperary County Museum to view original objects from the collection. Objects and images will be used to lead discussion on themes such as entertainment and the Arts in South Tipperary in the past. The Museum s postcard collection of towns and villages in South Tipperary will illustrate the changes that have taken place in areas such as buildings and architecture, industry and commerce and fashion. It is hoped the sessions will help to add to our knowledge of the objects in the Museum collection. A series of talks presented by Brina Casey, Outreach Officer of the National Gallery will be held in North and South Tipperary. In North Tipperary, Brina will give two illustrated talks on Highlights of the National Gallery s Collection. The talks will cover some of the wonderful works by world famous artists, such as Vermeer, Caravaggio and Jack Yeats that form the national collection. In South Tipperary, as part of the launch of Drawing Studies: A Celebration, Brina will present the exhibition which celebrates the great achievements of the 26 student s works and 6 reproductions of National Gallery paintings, highlighting their achievements and demonstrating how the collections of a museum can be brought to life through the active involvement of a group of enthusiastic learners. 9

Bealtaine Film - Dean Spanley in association with access Cinema and the Irish Film Institute This is a charming and eccentric little family comedy for the older generation. Based on a little-known 1936 novella by the Irish author Baron Dunsany, Dean Spanley stars Jeremy Northam as Fisk, an Edwardian publisher who is exasperated by his cantankerous father, played by Peter O Toole: a dotty yet powerful performance. Fisk s older brother was killed in the Boer war and his mother died of a broken heart soon after, but Fisk Sr refuses to grieve. Fraser s delightfully eccentric and ultimately touching film set in Edwardian England features O Toole on sublime form as an irascible curmudgeon... - Michael Dwyer, The Irish Times His son makes the acquaintance of Dean Spanley (Sam Neill), a peppery and somewhat Trollopian churchman, and he is astonished to discover that the dean is the reincarnation of a bizarre departed soul - a soul who may, by declaring himself, allow dad to rediscover his emotions. It is odd, yet amusing, and O Toole and Neill both give very nice performances. Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian 10
