ACCESO A LA INFORMACIÓN PRERREQUISITOS Y PRECONCEPTOS: SIMPLE PAST FORM [VERB+ED] or IRREGULAR VERBS You called Debbie. Did you call Debbie? You did not call Debbie. USES Completed Action in the Past Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific time in mind. PAST SIMPLE TENSE EXAMPLES I saw a movie yesterday. I didn't see a play yesterday. Last year, I traveled to Japan. Last year, I didn't travel to Korea. Did you have dinner last night? She washed her car. He didn't wash his car. A Series of Completed Actions We use the Simple Past to list a series of completed actions in the past. These actions happened 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on. Duration in Past The Simple Past can be used with a duration which starts and stops in the past. A duration is a longer action often indicated by expressions such as: for two years, for five minutes, all day, all year, etc. Habits in the Past The Simple Past can also be used to describe a habit which stopped in the past. It can have the same meaning as "used to." To make it clear that we are talking about a habit, we often add expressions such as: always, often, usually, never, when I was a child, when I was younger, etc. I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim. He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00. Did you add flour, pour in the milk, and then add the eggs? I lived in Brazil for two years. Shauna studied Japanese for five years. They sat at the beach all day. They did not stay at the party the entire time. I studied French when I was a child. He played the violin. He didn't play the piano. Did you play a musical instrument when you were a kid?

NUEVA INFORMACIÓN: Regular verbs: past simple and past participle 1. The regular past simple tense in the English language is usually formed by -ed ending (work - worked, stay - stayed). It is the same for all persons, singular and plural: I started, you started, he started, we played, they played. The spelling rules a) We add -d (not -ed) to the word that ends in -e. like - liked, love -loved. b) If it ends in a consonant and -y, we change -y into -i. carry - carried, try - tried. But: play - played, because it ends in a vowel and -y. c) If the regular verb has only one syllable and ends in a single vowel and a consonant, we double the consonant to keep the same pronunciation. stop - stopped, fit - fitted. The same rule applies to expressions with more syllables if the stress falls on the last syllable: ad'mit - admitted, pre'fer - preferred. But: 'enter - entered (the stress is not on the last syllable). In words ending in -l the consonant is always doubled after a single vowel: travel - travelled. 2. The regular past participle is the same. It is also formed by -ed ending (worked, stayed). It is used in perfect tenses and passive voice>: I have started, you had started, he will have started, it was started. Irregular verbs There are basically three irregular verb forms in English: 1.The base form (or bare infinitive): draw, lead, read, dream 2. The past tense (also called preterite): drew, led, read, dreamt or dreamed 3. The past participle (sometimes called perfect participle): drawn, led, read, dreamt or dreamed As you can see from the examples above, some of the forms are completely different (draw - drew - drawn), some have a different infinitive, but the two other ones are the same (lead - led - led), some have the same spelling, but different pronunciation (read - read - read), some can be both regular and irregular (dream - dreamt/dreamed - dreamt/dreamed) and some have the same spelling and pronunciation (set -set -set). MANY MUCH - MANY A) Rule: Many is used with plural count nouns. These words almost always end in s, so they are easy for students to spot. B) Positive Statements: With positive statements, the meaning of many is a lot, a big amount. She has many friends. There are many problems to solve before we can go home. C) Negative Statements: With negative statements, the meaning of not many is a few, a small amount. He doesn t have many courses this semester. There aren t many ways to use this software. D) Questions: With questions, many is used to ask about the amount when the amount is unknown. How many cars do they own? Are there many ways to say thank you in your language? E) Exceptions: Point out that there are a few well-known exceptions where a plural count noun doesn t end in s : We have many children. There weren t many people at the ceremony.

MUCH A) Rule: Much is used with non-count nouns. These words almost never end in s, so they are easy for students to catch. B) Positive Statements: Much is very formal and awkward in positive statements. I tell my students to generally avoid using much in positive statements. Instead, students can use a lot of or lots of. Avoid: I have much time to help you. Use: I have a lot of time to help you. / I have lots of time to help you. C) Negative Statements: With negative statements, the meaning of not much is a little, a small amount. She doesn t have much patience for people who are always late. It didn t take that much paper to print out my essay. D) Questions: With questions, much is used to ask about the amount when the amount is unknown. How much does this sweater cost? (Point out that we usually drop the noun money because it s obvious.) How much homework do you have? E) Exceptions: Point out that there are a few well-known exceptions where a non-count noun ends in s (there will be a blog post on this coming soon): Example: We didn t have much news. Also point out that we can use much in positive sentences with the words so and too (there will also be a blog post on so vs. too coming soon): I love you so much. I had so much fun at the party last night. The new software caused us too much trouble, so we switched back to our old program. INTEGRACIÓN: 1.
