It seeks to promote cinema in Burkina Faso, mainly by showing films in movie theaters. Its aim is to saveguard and promote the Art of Cinema ( the 7 th Art) in Burkina Faso by showing, distributing and promoting film products as well as other art and cultural forms prevalent in Burkina Faso. The Association may also sponsor the organization of cultural events such as festivals, training workshops, exhibitions, etc. It may also promote exchanges among countries, regions, departments, communities, populations and concerned persons. Why re-open a theatre Bobo-Dioulasso? There is presently not a single cinema left in Bobo-Dioulasso Cinema is a well-established and popular type of entertainment in Burkina Faso African cinema today has started offering audiences images of themselves Video productions as from 2000 have provided a new dimension to African cinema A new generation of film-makers has given a boost to present burkinabè cinema Movie theaters that have opened in Burkina are viable The nature of the project The overriding objective is to provide a two-movie hall complex on the mythical site of former Ciné Guimbi in Bobo-Dioulasso, which is the second largest city and the cultural capital of Burkina Faso. The land on which stands Cine Guimbi has recently been purchased; what must now follow is the reconstruction work and functional implementation of Cine Guimbi by end 2015. Overall objectives: Promoting cinema in Burkina Faso Safeguarding part of Bobo-Dioulasso s cultural heritage 4
Specific targets Purchasing Cine Guimbi (acquired in December 2013) Renovating Ciné Guimbi by building two covered and functional movie halls with 324 and 156 seats respectively. Establishing an effective management of the building based on the following criteria: A locally-run management and administration The scheduling of author films and popular African and international favorites; The launching cultural initiatives for Bobo-Dioulasso and Burkina Faso; Organizing an annual film festival aimed at promoting African films and world cinema; Organizing educational visual art activities for children and young adults; Building two covered movie-halls equipped with DLP projection facilities and digital sound system. Building an office space, a multi-purpose hall and a cafeteria. Improving and covering the existing gutters bordering the site Opening of a public-friendly and well-run movie theater A local management team will be established for the programming of films and activities with facilitators covering specific actions for the benefit of target groups (mainly children and women). It will host and support cultural events and run didactic activities in visual education. All profits made through Ciné Guimbi will remain within the Association and be reinvested in activities associated with Ciné Guimbi and the promotion of cinema in Burkina Faso. SCOPE FOR ACTION IN A NEWLY RENOVATED CINE GUIMBI Further to the daily programming of films, the running of didactic visual art activities and inclusive projections, a variety of other specific events will be held at Ciné Guimbi, such as: Bobo Dioulasso s Fespaco Since 2013 we have been partners of the world s biggest African and Panafrican Film Festival held every two years in Ouagadougou. The Festival s General Director, Michel Ouedraogo, has pledged to have Giné Guimbi become the focal point of Fespaco events in Bobo taking place immediately after the Ouagadougou festival. The Guimbi Festival In cooperation with our numerous film festival partners such as Namur s FIFF, Cannes Quinzaine des réalisateurs, Geneva s Black Movie Festival, the African Film Festivals of Lausanne and Apt, Poitiers Rencontres Henri-Langlois, Lille s Independent Film Festival, etc., an annual non-competitive festival will be organized at Ciné Guimbi based on a major theme each year. For our first Festival in Bobo, Ciné Guimbi will be proposing the theme of North-South issues in emerging Africa s present context. Films and new audiovisual technologies represent powerful development tools for building bridges among cultures. 5

Presently under construction: a cinema complex with three movie halls in Dakar, a cinema in Villard-de- Lans(France), three cinemas in Amiens (France). Besides his architectural insight, it is Jean-Marc Lalo s passion for city-life and urban dwellers that inspire him to build spaces where the general public can meet to share experiences and emotions in symbolic places. These include cultural projects but also housing and hotels while always giving greatest attention to the site and its inhabitants. 6
