The Arcadelt Ave Maria" by Pierre Louis Phililppe Dietsch (Dijon 1808 1865 Paris) and Franz Liszt's Ave Maria d'arcadelt: In March of 1842, Dietsch, for a choral concert, set an abbreviated text of the Ave Maria to a secular 16th century melody of Jacob Arcadelt's (c. 1505-1568) 3-voice madrigal Nous voyons que les hommes. The Ave Maria was thus created by Dietsch, by modifying some rhythms and adding a bass line for 4 voice parts; and Dietsch thus placed Arcadelt's name upon the Ave Maria score. Franz Liszt's (1811-1887) "Ave Maria d'arcadelt" for organ (composed 1862, published by Peter's 1865) resulted from List's friendship with Dietsch. Both the romantic vertical harmonization of the choral voices, and Liszt's organ rendering, are indeed products of the nineteenth century romantic period, and are connected to Arcadelt's 16th century, only through Arcadelt's melody, Nous voyons que les hommes. Dietsch's text omits the "Mater Dei" and peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae ("Mother of God" and "sinners, now and in the hour of our death"). Arcadelt's original madrigal text: Nous voyons que les hommes We see that men (translation: Carmen Golden) Font tous vertu d'aimer, Are all under love, Et sottes qui nous sommes And silly that we are Voulons l'amour blamer:...etc. Want love blamed:
Ave Maria by "Giulio Caccini" This Ave Maria by "Giulio Caccini" ( ch as in Puccini) is a popular and much recorded aria penned by Vladimir Vavilov around 1970. Vavilov recorded it himself on the Melodiya label in 1972 and ascribed the Ave Maria to "Anonymous". After Vavilov's death, an organist Mark Shakhin, one of the performers on the 1972 recording, attributed the "Ave Maria" to the late Rennassiance / Early Baroque composer Giulio Caccini (October 1551 December 1618). Shakhin gave copies of the "newly discover scores" to other musicians, hence a distribution to the public of the original music. However, several copyrighted arrangements and orchestrations exist. In an arrangement made by the organist Oleg Yanchenko for the recording by Irina Arkhipova in 1987, the piece came to be famous worldwide. The "Cassini" Ave Maria's original text is merely multiple repetitions of "Ave Maria"; here however is a complete implementation of the standard Roman Catholic text of the Ave Maria for use at Mass, by Daryel Nance, 2011. Also the piano accompniment is a new offering by the same. Check for availability of this arrangement at www.musicformass.org. This arrangement with the proper liturgical text was first performed by Lauren Nance, in Houston, May 18, 2011.
