CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This manual has been created as a guide t help yu establish the physical frmat and appearance f yur Creative Writing thesis. Submissin f the thesis is the final step in a prgram leading t cnferral f the MFA degree. Yur thesis is a schlarly publicatin reflecting the results f yur research and academic pursuits at the University f Oregn. As such, yur dcument makes a statement abut yu and the quality f yur research, yur department, and the standards f excellence upheld by the University f Oregn. Yur thesis will be made available thrugh the UO Libraries and will be micrfilmed fr the University f Oregn archives. Graduate Schl Apprval Yur thesis is a prfessinal dcument and shuld meet prfessinal standards in cntent and appearance. The Graduate Schl has established guidelines t ensure unifrmity in style and frmat, and yur dcument must meet these standards t be apprved. Student Respnsibility It is the student s respnsibility t read and fulfill the requirements presented here and t submit a dcument f the highest quality. The Graduate Schl des nt edit fr cntent r grammar. Crrect grammar, punctuatin, and spelling always shuld be used, and these aspects are the respnsibility f the student. Please cnsult yur department and yur advisr fr specific cntent requirements. Prfreading is the respnsibility f the student and his r her advisr. Style The frmat requirements in this Creative Writing Prgram: Thesis Style and Plicy Manual take precedence ver frmat rules fund in ther style manuals. Frmat includes definitin f the parts f the thesis and the rder in which they are presented, the style f the prefatry pages, type fnt, margins, spacing, the rder and placement f page numbers, infrmatin t be included in the Table f Cntents, and the requirement fr permissin t reprduce cpyrighted material. The Graduate Schl will recmmend a student fr the degree sught nly when the thesis cmpletely satisfies the requirements stated in the current editin f the University f Oregn Creative Writing Style and Plicy Manual. Please d nt use previusly published University f Oregn theses yu find in the library r n the Internet as examples f style and frmat. Requirements change peridically, and exceptins t rules may have been allwed fr reasns that d nt apply in all cases. Students are respnsible fr meeting the requirements f the Creative Writing Style and Plicy Manual currently in effect. 4

Thesis Editr Each term, the Thesis Editr is available t cnsult with students during drp-in ffice hurs. Althugh cnsultatins are nt required, we very strngly recmmended that students meet with the Editr well befre the final thesis draft is cmpleted. This review usually takes 10 15 minutes and, due t time limitatins, cannt be cnsidered thrugh r definitive. (Prfreading is the respnsibility f the student and his r her advisr.) Because frmatting issues are the primary cncern in this review, it is nt necessary that yu bring a final cpy f yur dcument with yu. A few pages (including all the prefatry pages and sme sample pages) are usually are sufficient. Students may als submit drafts fr cnsultatin via email. Fr questins regarding style and frmat, cntact the Editr at gradedit@uregn.edu. 5

CHAPTER II RESEARCH ETHICS AND COPYRIGHTING All students have a respnsibility t cnduct and reprt the results f their research in an pen and ethical manner. A thesis represents the culminatin f years f academic preparatin and uniquely expresses a student s training, skills, and ideas. A thesis therefre deserves the student s greatest effrt and, as with all schlarly wrk, demands cmpliance with the highest ethical standards. Ethical miscnduct in research is any fabricatin, falsificatin and plagiarism in prpsing, cnducting r reprting research r ther schlarly activities. 1 Fabricating research findings refers t making up results, and falsifying research results refers t altering, misrepresenting, r selectively reprting findings. 2 Each f these acts vilates the integrity f the research prcess and cnstitutes a serius breach f accepted ethical standards. Ethical research practice therefre requires that students at all stages f the research prcess cnduct their research in an pen and hnest manner and make every effrt t ensure the accuracy f their findings. Plagiarism is a frm f ethical miscnduct and cnsists f the intentinal r unintentinal use f the wrds, ideas, diagrams f publicly available wrk withut apprpriately acknwledging the surces f these materials. 3 Thus, any use f the wrds, phrases, ideas, r wrk f thers in any frm withut acknwledgment f the riginal surces cnstitutes plagiarism and is subject t serius penalty. Students shuld be aware that the rdering f ideas in a discussin, the cntent f a literature review, and the listing f references at the end f a discussin may reflect the thinking f thers. Such cntributins must be acknwledged. 4 Students at the University f Oregn are expected t maintain the highest ethical standards in prpsing, cnducting, and reprting their research in the thesis. Cpyrighting and Licensing Yur Wrk As the authr, yu wn the cpyright as sn as yur dissertatin r thesis is fixed in a tangible medium. Yu may register yur cpyright with the U.S. Cpyright Office. If yu chse t register yur wn cpyright, yu can d it directly thrugh the Library f Cngress U.S. Cpyright Office fr a fee f $35 t $65. 1 Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy, Fstering Academic Integrity: Reprt f the Cmmittee n Academic Respnsibility (Cambridge: Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy, 15 April 1992), 3. 2 Ibid., 8 9. 3 University f Washingtn Graduate Schl, Style and Plicy Manual fr Theses and Dissertatins, rev. ed. (Seattle: University f Washingtn Graduate Schl, 1991). 4 Betty Lu Dubis, Ethics in Research, in Guidelines fr Preparing a Thesis r Dissertatin (Las Cruces: New Mexic State University Graduate Schl, 1989), 1 2. 6

By registering the cpyright f yur thesis, yu will be able t sue fr statutry damages OR actual damages/prfits; if yu d nt register yur cpyright yu can cllect ONLY actual damages/prfit. Statutry damages are easier t cllect and d nt require prf f lsses incurred r an expert witness t argue n yur behalf. Cpyrighting with a Creative Cmmns License Cpyright autmatically prvides five exclusive rights cmmnly labeled as all rights reserved. Creative Cmmns (CC) licenses allw yu t assign sme rights reserved fr yur wrk. By chsing a CC license yu are nt giving up the cpyright f yur thesis, just selecting what rights yu wuld like t prtect and what uses by thers yu wuld like t permit withut having t ask fr yur permissin. Creative Cmmns allws yu t chse frm six different licensing ptins, which are written t cnfrm t internatinal cpyright treaties and are recgnized by cuntries all ver the wrld. The cre tenant f all CC licenses is attributin and that yu get credited fr the ideas expressed in yur thesis. The mst cmmn license used fr academic purpses is the CC-BY-NC-ND, which is the mst restrictive CC license ffered. It means that yur thesis can be dwnladed and shared with attributin (BY), that it cannt be used fr cmmercial purpses (NC), and that it cannt be remixed, changed, r made int a derivative wrk (ND). A less-restrictive ptin is the CC-BY-NC-SA, which sme UO students have used fr their theses. This means that the thesis can be shared freely with attributin fr nncmmercial purpses, but the authr will allw remixes/derivatives as lng as any new creatin using the thesis is shared under the same terms (SA). If yu chse a Creative Cmmns licensing ptin, yu must include this infrmatin n yur cpyright page (see the examples in Appendix C, Sample Prefatry Pages). Fr mre infrmatin n Creative Cmmns licensing, cntact the UO Libraries Schlars Bank Team r see the Creative Cmmns website (see Appendix A fr links). Using Materials Cpyrighted by Others Special attentin must be given t the use f cpyrighted materials. Any cpyrighted material used in yur thesis, beynd brief excerpts, must be accmpanied by written permissin f the cpyright wner. Cpies f permissin letters shuld be prvided t the Graduate Schl Fr mre infrmatin abut cpyright, key in the wrd cpyright in the search engine n the University f Oregn Hme Page fr many useful surces. Yu may als cntact the University f Oregn Libraries Schlars Bank Team. 7

Check with yur advisr and cmmittee members fr infrmatin abut specific cpyright issues related t yur field. 8

CHAPTER III REQUIREMENTS FOR CREATIVE WRITING MASTER S THESES A thesis is a substantial dcument presenting independent wrk that makes a cntributin t the current bdy f knwledge in a schlarly field. A thesis must be frmatted t cnfrm t the Graduate Schl specificatins as stated in the current University f Oregn Creative Writing Prgram: Thesis Style and Plicy Manual. The thesis is presented t the Graduate Schl, recrded n the student s transcript, and frwarded t the UO Libraries fr binding, catalging, and shelving. There are bth departmental and Graduate Schl requirements fr successful cmpletin f a thesis. The student is respnsible fr requesting infrmatin frm the Creative Writing Prgram abut the varius steps invlved and the standards expected by the department. Students als are respnsible fr familiarizing themselves with the Graduate Schl requirements fr the thesis. Submissin Prcedures and Requirements The thesis is the final requirement fr a master s degree and is submitted t the Graduate Schl during the term the student plans t graduate. T ensure awarding f the degree, thesis students need t be aware f the three steps listed belw. Each step has deadlines. Nte: The dates fr these deadlines differ frm ne academic year t the next. Fr the exact dates, see the Graduate Schl website Deadlines pages (see Appendix A fr link) fr the cmpletin f degree requirements. 1. Early in the term in which the degree is t be awarded: Cmplete the nline Applicatin fr Advanced Degree with Thesis Optin indicated. (See Appendix A fr link.) Establish lgin name/passwrd: this can be used t access the Applicatin fr Advanced Degree. 2. The last week f classes, prir t finals week: Submit the thesis t the Graduate Schl by the submissin deadline fr the term the degree will be awarded. (Nte: a thesis may be submitted any time during the term prir t the deadline.) Creative Writing students must submit tw paper cpies f the thesis. The thesis must be printed n white 20- t 24-lb archival quality paper with at least 25% cttn cntent (18-lb paper is accepted but nt preferred). There must be an identifying watermark in the paper but n ther textures r patterns. Linen style paper is nt allwed. There must be an riginal signature f the chairpersn n bth cpies f the apprval page. The thesis is submitted t the Graduate Schl accmpanied by the cmpleted and signed Creative Writing Thesis Submissin Frm (see Appendix A fr link). 9

Students shuld expect the turn-in prcess at the Graduate Schl t take at least 15 minutes. The tw f cpies f the unbund thesis must be packaged in separate manila clasp envelpes r 8½- by 11-inch paper bxes with a cpy f the title page firmly attached t the utside f each envelpe r bx. If the thesis is being submitted by prxy r by mail, the authr is respnsible fr making sure that the thesis is delivered n time and undamaged and that everything is enclsed: the signed apprval pages and the cmpleted and signed Creative Writing Thesis Submissin Frm. If the thesis is nt in cmpliance with submissin requirements r is nt received n time, it will nt be accepted. 3. Fr the next 4 weeks after yu have upladed yur thesis: Yu must stay in tuch with the Graduate Schl until yu get final apprval ntificatin After the thesis has been submitted t the Graduate Schl, it will be reviewed by the Thesis Editr fr acceptable frmat. If needed, a list f required frmat crrectins will be sent t the student by email. The student shuld expect a turn-arund time f 1 t 2 weeks fr the crrectin list. The student must submit the crrected pages within 1 week after receipt f the list. Only the pages requested will be accepted. THINGS TO REMEMBER Deadlines The degree cannt be awarded until the thesis crrectins have been apprved. The dates fr these deadlines differ frm ne academic year t the next. Fr the exact dates, see Deadlines Master s Degree Requirements n the Graduate Schl website (see Appendix A fr link). Official Department Name and Number f Cpies Required The fficial name f yur department is the Creative Writing Prgram. Tw paper cpies f yur thesis are required. Paper All parts f the thesis shuld be printed n white 20- t 24-lb archival quality paper with at least 25% cttn cntent (18-lb paper is accepted but nt preferred). There must be an identifying watermark in the paper but n ther textures r patterns. Linen style paper is nt allwed. Be sure t include fur blank sheets f yur bnd paper fr use as flyleaves in the binding prcess. 10

Language Requirements The thesis must be written in English, including mst quted materials, with the exceptin f epigraphs. Under exceptinal circumstances and with prir apprval by the Dean f the Graduate Schl, anther language may be used. Native language ther than English des nt cnstitute an exceptinal circumstance. Cmmnwealth (British) spelling is allwed but must be used cnsistently thrughut. Faculty Apprval Apprval f yur final thesis manuscript is indicated by the chairpersn s riginal signature n the apprval page (page ii f the prefatry pages) when the thesis is submitted t the Graduate Schl. Thesis Crrectin Plicy After yu have submitted yur cmpleted and signed thesis t the Graduate Schl, the fllwing plicy will be in effect: 1. When yu turn in yur thesis, the Graduate Schl is accepting it as a finished dcument. The Thesis Editr will review the dcument fr frmat prblems nly. Only thse crrected pages specifically requested by the Editr will be accepted and inserted int yur thesis. 2. Crrected pages requested by the Editr shuld be submitted by prviding tw cpies f each crrected page n yur cttn thesis paper, unless therwise indicated. T maintain the integrity f yur dcument, yu must be abslutely sure that each crrected page begins and ends with the same wrds as the riginal. If the changes yu make affect the prper flw f text frm ne page t anther, yu must submit cpies f all the pages affected. 3. Put each set f crrected pages in numerical rder. 4. Because the crrectin and apprval prcess can take up t 30 days, students must maintain e-mail cntact with the Graduate Schl during this time t ensure graduatin fr that term. If there is a pssibility that yu will be incmmunicad during this perid, yu shuld plan t turn in yur thesis well befre the published deadline r plan t have smene designated t act fr yu. The master s degree cannt be awarded until all thesis crrectins have been submitted and apprved. 11

CHAPTER IV PARTS OF THE THESIS Prefatry Pages Frnt flyleaf (a blank page f yur thesis paper with n page number) Title page (bears n page number but is cunted as page i) Apprval page (page ii lwercase Rman numeral) Cpyright page (ptinal) (cntinue cnsecutive numbering with lwercase Rman numerals) Curriculum Vitae (cntinue cnsecutive numbering with lwercase Rman numerals) Acknwledgements (ptinal) (cntinue cnsecutive numbering with lwercase Rman numerals) Dedicatin (ptinal) (cntinue cnsecutive numbering with lwercase Rman numerals) Table f Cntents (cntinue cnsecutive numbering with lwercase Rman numerals) (M.F.A. candidates in Creative Writing d nt prvide an Abstract.) Bdy f Text Text f thesis (begin paginatin with Arabic numbers, starting with number 1 n the first page f text) Back flyleaf (a blank page f yur thesis paper with n page number) 12

CHAPTER V FORMATTING THE THESIS Student Respnsibility The student is respnsible fr making sure that the thesis is in an acceptable style and frmat. In additin t eliminating misspellings and typgraphical errrs, the student als is respnsible fr the crrect arrangement f materials, crrect grammar and punctuatin, and neatness. Frmat The University f Oregn Creative Writing Prgram: Thesis Style and Plicy Manual takes precedence in all matters f frmat unless therwise nted. If yu are advised by yur department t use a frmat different frm the acceptable Graduate Schl frmat, special permissin must be btained frm the Graduate Schl. In this case, it is the student s respnsibility t btain timely permissin befre submissin f the thesis t the Graduate Schl. MATERIALS AND MECHANICS The fllwing requirements are nt arbitrary but are dictated by the cnditins necessary t achieve the best quality f reprductin when the dcument is micrfilmed and/r bund. Paper Every thesis must be printed n white archival quality paper that has at least 25% cttn cntent, is 8½ by 11 inches in size, and is 20 t 24 lb in weight (18-lb paper is accepted but nt preferred). There must be an identifying watermark in the paper but n ther textures r patterns. Linen style paper is nt acceptable. Because the paper nrmally used in cpy machines is nt acceptable, students must specifically request this archival thesis paper if having the thesis prfessinally printed. Erasable bnd paper is nt acceptable. Under certain circumstances, 11- by 17-inch paper can be used. Cnsult with the Graduate Schl fr special frmatting requirements assciated with this larger paper. Margins Margins are defined as the white space surrunding the printed matter. The page number is cnsidered printed matter and must nt invade the white space. The mechanics f micrfilming and binding require specific margins. Because f pssible printer variatins and phtcpy distrtin, we strngly suggest that yu print ut sme sample pages and measure yur margins with a ruler t make certain they are accurate. See 13

Appendix B (Frmatting and Placement f Margins and Page Numbers) fr details n hw t set margins using Micrsft Wrd. Margin requirements: 1.5 inches minimum n the left (binding) edge 1 inch minimum n tp, right, and bttm edges The first page f each sectin in the prefatry pages and the first page f each chapter, shuld begin 2 t 2.5 inches dwn frm the tp f the paper (unifrmly placed fr each sectin). Text n successive pages must be separated frm the page number by at least ne blank line (blank line is added in the header: see Page Numbers, belw). Margins must be unifrm n all pages. Page Numbers Page numbers must be placed in the upper right crner f each page, 1 inch dwn frm the tp edge f the paper and 1 inch in frm the right edge. Use cnsecutive lwercase Rman numerals (ii, iii, iv, etc.) n all prefatry pages and Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.) n all the pages that fllw. Page numbers must be separated frm text by an extra line f space and shuld be frmatted in a text header. See Appendix B fr details n prper placement f page numbers using Micrsft Wrd. The first page f text is page number 1, and all successive page numbers shuld fllw cnsecutively. The nly page in the dcument that des nt have a page number is the Title page, althugh it is cunted as page i (lwercase Rman numeral). Centering Text t be centered (e.g., chapter titles) shuld be centered between the 1.5-inch left margin and the 1-inch right margin. Make sure there is n additinal first-line indent included in the paragraph frmat fr centered lines. Spacing and Justificatin All regular text must be frmatted with duble r 1.5-line spacing, including chapter titles and headings. Exceptins: Petry. Text shuld be left justified with paragraph indents and n hyphenatin. Full page justificatin is discuraged because it frequently causes incnsistency in spacing between wrds. Type Fnts The same type fnt must be used thrughut, i.e., fr prefatry pages, text bdy, and page numbers. Times New Rman, Curier, Bkman, and similar standard serif fnts cpy and micrfilm well. Sans-serif fnts such as Arial may make it difficult t distinguish between sme characters such as the capital letter I and the lwercase letter l. 14

12-pint type is ideal fr text; hwever, fnt sizes f 10 r 11 pints als are acceptable. Larger type, up t 16 pint, may be used fr titles. Script and ther rnamental type fnts are nt acceptable fr the main text typeface. Bld face and italics may be used in subheadings and specific wrds in text, but extensive use shuld be avided. Symbls Special fnts fr languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Sanskrit, Russian, and Greek and fr phnetic prnunciatin are allwed within the text but cannt be used exclusively in place f English characters. If a cmputer symbl is nt available, it may be neatly hand-drawn with black indelible ink f archival quality. Legibility is the criterin fr acceptance. The Graduate Schl will reject theses that cntain handwritten symbls that d nt meet the legibility standard. Print Quality Use nly ne side f the paper. Printing shuld be f letter quality. Laser printers give the best results. High-quality phtcpies f dcuments printed n a laser printer als are acceptable. Wrds and images shuld be sharp and clean, shuld nt smear when tuched, and shuld nt transfer ink t the back f the previus page. Legibility Spacing and heading style shuld be selected fr their legibility. A style that wuld allw the heading r title t be cnfused with the text shuld nt be used. Crrectins Discernible erasures, use f any cver-up r whitening substance, strikevers, r interlineatins are nt acceptable in the final cpy. Hwever, crrectin fluid r tape may be used n the master cpy befre duplicatin. Cpy Quality Original printed cpies are recmmended. Phtcpies are acceptable as lng as they meet the Paper, Print Quality, and Legibility requirements. Phtcpies must be neat, clean, and perfectly aligned n the paper, withut streaks, spts, r smudges, and type must be cnsistently sharp thrughut. If yu are cncerned abut cpy quality, cnsult the Graduate Schl befre final cpies are prduced. 15

CHAPTER VI PREFATORY PAGES: FORMATTING AND CONTENT INSTRUCTIONS Prefrmatted templates (designed in Micrsft Wrd) are available n the Graduate Schl website (see Chapter VII fr instructins and Appendix A fr direct links). We highly recmmend that yu use these templates fr the creatin f yur prefatry pages. Whether yu use the template r chse t frmat the pages n yur wn, please cmpare yur results with the sample prefatry pages in Appendix C. Upn visual inspectin, each page shuld clsely match its crrespnding sample page. Fllwing are detailed instructins fr frmatting and cntent f prefatry pages. 1. Title Page Begin 2.5 t 3 inches frm the tp f the paper. Type the title f yur dcument in ALL CAPS, centered. If the title runs nt mre than ne line, use inverted pyramid style (first line lnger than the secnd, see sample pages), duble spaced. N page number appears n the title page, but it is cunted as page i. Halfway dwn the page, type by (lwercase); leave ne blank line; type yur fficial UO name f recrd as it appears in DuckWeb, in ALL CAPS, centered. The space between the last line f the title and the wrd by shuld be equal t the space between yur name and the wrds A THESIS belw. Leave ne blank line after A THESIS. Insert the Presented t the infrmatin. The presentatin statement text is single spaced, is wrded and arranged exactly as shwn n the sample page, and ends with the name f the degree t be cnferred (Master f Fine Arts). Leave ne blank line, and n the last line type the mnth and year f graduatin: fall term is December; winter term is March; spring term is June; summer term is September. 2. Apprval Page Use lwercase Rman numerals t number all prefatry pages after the Title Page. The apprval page is page ii. Page numbers shuld be in the same fnt type and size as the bdy f yur text.
