The Everett Chorale s 50th Season World Premiere: The Winds of Africa The Everett Chorale s third and final concert of our 50th year will feature The Winds of Africa, a world premiere composed by Ken Kraintz. Describing his new work, Ken stated, This piece was written as a light concert choir piece to depict the never ending winds that constantly drift across the African landscape. The harmonies used in this work convey a sense of openness and the massive size of the African continent. The rhythmic patterns change from a smooth, flowing texture to that of a lively, animated jungle chant introduced and accented by the piano accompaniment. The selection ends quietly using both themes as night falls and Africa readies itself for yet another day of endless winds. Ken describes his musical career: During my 33 years as a public school teacher and arts administrator, I developed and observed many outstanding choral music programs. Each of them had these common characteristics: a strong, dedicated teacher, access to a broad spectrum of students and performance of quality literature that challenged, entertained and motivated choir members. In the last fifteen years I have spent the majority of my time writing, arranging, and publishing vocal jazz while also serving as a guest clinician/conductor at music festivals and conferences throughout the US and Canada. My emphasis was primarily high school and college ensembles, however I always looked forward to working with middle school groups. The honest effort and boundless energy displayed by these young people and their directors is the motivating factor for establishing my new company, SingFree.net. The winds of Africa is the cornerstone of a set of five new compositions that I ve written specifically for middle school choirs which will be released later this year. Although the music is all original, the real unique angle is that the pieces are delivered to the directors and choir members over the internet. Using their electronic devices, students can see, hear, and practice their new music at any time. Ken Kraintz Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/theeverettchorale
