Our mission is to perform a wide variety of quality choral music for the enrichment and enjoyment of our community while providing local singers the opportunity to expand their musical knowledge and experience. Inside this issue: Celebrate and Sing concerts June 11 & 12 The Winds of Africa The Snohomish County Children s Choir coming performances 1 2 3 June, 2016 The Everett Chorale s final concert of our 50th season offers a collage of American choral music performed by the Chorale over the past 50 years. This concert features a selection of favorites including Celebrate and Sing by Laura Farnell, Some Folks, Stephen Foster; choral selections from The Sound of Music, Rodgers and Hammerstein, when previous Choral members and the audience will be invited to sing along; With a Voice of Singing, Martin Shaw; Hear My Prayer, Moses Hogan; Ye Followers of the Lamb, Edwin Ferguson; Three Contemporary Madrigals, Eugene Butler; All My Trials, Norman Luboff; Coffee Grows on White Oak Trees, Jack Boyd; and This Land is Your Land, Woody Guthrie. The Chorale will present a world premiere of The Winds of Africa, by local composer Ken Kraintz. The Eisenhower Middle School Choir from Everett, under the direction of Jaci Cummings, will join the Chorale for this performance. See page 2 for more information. As a special surprise, Pat Castro, who conducted the Chorale from 1988 to 1993, will conduct The Road Not Taken, one piece by Randall Thompson from Frostaina, a suite of seven pieces, with words by Robert Frost. Pat conducted the chorale in the entire Frostaina suite on his last program in 1993. Musical Notes Volume III, Number IV Celebrate and Sing! The concert will finish with Say it with a Song, by Don Besig. The Everett Chorale s 50th Season World Premiere: The Winds of Africa The Everett Chorale s third and final concert of our 50th year will feature The Winds of Africa, a world premiere composed by Ken Kraintz. Describing his new work, Ken stated, This piece was written as a light concert choir piece to depict the never ending winds that constantly drift across the African landscape. The harmonies used in this work convey a sense of openness and the massive size of the African continent. The rhythmic patterns change from a smooth, flowing texture to that of a lively, animated jungle chant introduced and accented by the piano accompaniment. The selection ends quietly using both themes as night falls and Africa readies itself for yet another day of endless winds. Ken describes his musical career: During my 33 years as a public school teacher and arts administrator, I developed and observed many outstanding choral music programs. Each of them had these common characteristics: a strong, dedicated teacher, access to a broad spectrum of students and performance of quality literature that challenged, entertained and motivated choir members. In the last fifteen years I have spent the majority of my time writing, arranging, and publishing vocal jazz while also serving as a guest clinician/conductor at music festivals and conferences throughout the US and Canada. My emphasis was primarily high school and college ensembles, however I always looked forward to working with middle school groups. The honest effort and boundless energy displayed by these young people and their directors is the motivating factor for establishing my new company, SingFree.net. The winds of Africa is the cornerstone of a set of five new compositions that I ve written specifically for middle school choirs which will be released later this year. Although the music is all original, the real unique angle is that the pieces are delivered to the directors and choir members over the internet.
