Divisions on an Italian Ground Divisions on an Italian Ground or lute and guitar is one o Peter Billam s early comositions. It was written in 98 when he was living in Biel, Switzerland, and actively laying both guitar and lute. It is a set o variations on the theme rom Robert Carr s iece o the same name; there are also reerences to Brahms Paganini Variations. The ollowing temo suggestions are editorial only, and should be disregarded with a clear conscience. The theme could be taken at around 88, the second variation Etwas rasch at about 96 crochets er minute, the ith Immer staccato at about 6 bars er minute, the eighth Ausdrücksvoll at about 56 crochets er minute, and the inal Etwas langsamer als das Thema at about 8. Also available is the iece o the same title by Robert Carr, taken rom The Delightul Comanion: or, Choice new lessons or the Recorder or Flute ublished by John Carr in 686, with the continuo realised or guitar in 98 by Peter Billam. The solo art can be layed on Alto Recorder, asoreseen by Robert Carr, or on Flute, making a comanion iece or Peter Billam s variations. Carr s Delightul Comanion was initially ublished in 68, though no coies o this irst edition are extant. The divisions turn u again in the 695 edition o The Division Violin and are also reublished in 78 (with ewer ornaments) in The Second Part o the Division Flute containing a Collection o Divisions uon Several Excellent Grounds or the Flute being very Imroving and Delightull to all Lovers othat Instrument. 98 Peter Billam htt://www.jb.com.au
