Story Dictation Read the following questions about Morris the Moose to your child, and ask him or her to make up a story in response. Write down the story word for word on the lines provided. Then, have your child illustrate the story. In this story, Morris makes a silly mistake he meets a cow and thinks she is a moose! Would anything silly happen if Morris met you? Tic-Tac-Toe Instructions: Choose two word endings or beginnings from the lists below one for your child and one for yourself. Guess the Word Instructions: Read the sound(s) each word starts or ends with aloud to your child and then read the clues one at a time. After each clue, have your child try to guess the word. If your child is stumped, remind him/her of the sound(s) the word begins or ends with. Feel free to provide additional clues as necessary. Answers are printed upside down at the bottom of the page. Tongue Twisters Instructions: Read the name below aloud to your child. Then have your child come up with a tongue twister by making a sentence where as many of the words as possible begin with the same sound as the name. Write down each tongue twister on the line provided and then read it back to your child. Easy Example: Ben bakes buns and buys butter. Story Dictation This week in class, we read Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik. Read the questions below to your child and ask him to make up a story in response. Write down the story word for word on the lines provided. Then, have your child illustrate the story. In What Will Little Bear Wear? Little Bear decides to wear his fur coat to play out in the cold. Do you like to play in the snow? In the rain? At the beach? Tell a story about where you like to play outdoors, what you like to do there, and how you dress when you go there. 13

Wordman Instructions: Choose a word from the lists on the next page don t let your child see the words. In one of the boxes below, draw a line for each letter of the word you chose. Have your child guess letters to go in the word. If your child guesses a letter that is not in the word, write it to the side of the word and add one body part (head, arm, leg, etc.) to a stick figure. Your child wins by guessing the word before you finish drawing the person. After your child guesses the word, choose another one from the list and play again. 15

Rhymes Instructions: Read each line out loud and have your child come up with a line that rhymes. Write the line in the space provided, then read both lines to your child. If your child gets stuck, first help him/her think of a rhyming word for the end of the line. Then work together to come up with the rest of the line. Example: I love to wear my favorite cap Even when I take a nap. I saw a funny-looking cat A crocodile and a frog When it s time to go to bed I have a song I like to sing I like to go outside and play Make Your Own Instructions: Come up with your own first line and have your child create the rhyme. Or have your child come up with the first line, and you create the rhyme. 18
