APRIL AND THE EXTRAORDINARY WORLD AVRIL ET LE MONDE TRUQUÉ Director: Frank Ekinci, Christian Desmares Country: France Voiced by: Marion Cotillard, Jean Rochefort Duration: 105 mins Date of Release: 2015 Recommended For: Grade 4 to Year 10 Genre: Animated film, Family film Imagine an alternate world where science and technological discovery halted in the nineteenth century because all the scientists had been kidnapped! This wonder-filled animation creates a Paris of 1941 built on coal and steam, in a gripping story that will inspire awe in children and adults alike. In this richly imagined visual feast, we follow the journey of April (voiced by international star Marion Cotillard) and her talking cat Darwin as they try to discover the evil masterminds who are stunting the world s progress. Thrilling and ingenious adventures follow, recalling classic sci-fi serials and the works of Jules Verne, all leading to a spectacular finale. Fans of comic book adventures will love the film s return to traditional line drawings based on the popular books by Jacques Tardi, with minimal computer effects. Funny, moody, fascinating and poignant in turn, this was a worthy winner of Best Film at the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and is a timely reminder of the need to respect of scientific endeavour. Jappeloup director Christian Duguay returns with this latest instalment of the much-loved 1960s TV series adaptation. Set at the close of the Second World War, Sebastian (Félix Bossuet) is now ten years old, anxiously awaiting the return of his friend Angelina (Margaux Chatelier, soon to star in TV s Outlander). When news arrives that she has perished in a plane crash in the Alps, only Sebastian s grandfather (Tchéky Karyo, A Very Long Engagement) believes there is hope to find her alive. And so an action-packed search begins, full of danger and lifechanging secrets. THE WHITE KNIGHTS LES CHEVALIERS BLANCS Director: Joachim Lafosse Country: France/Belgium Cast: Vincent Lindon, Louise Bourgoin, Valérie Donzelli, Reda Kateb Duration: 117 mins Date of Release: 2016 Recommended For: Years 11 & 12 Genre: Drama AUSTRALIAN PREMIÈRE In an unnamed African country, the Move for Kids organization (based on the real-life Zoe s Ark) is officially set up to rescue orphans and provides them with a new life in France. Led by Jacques (Vincent Lindon, best actor winner at Cannes for The Measure of a Man), it soon becomes apparent that the organisation s motives behind saving the orphans is not always altruistic. With the line between humanitarian assistance and human trafficking becoming blurred, the stakes and risk get higher. But who is right and who is wrong? As a provocative and urgently current examination of the sometimes murky moral choices made by NGOs in strifetorn environments, this is an ambiguous, disturbing and yet hopeful must-see film. Shot with shocking immediacy, it vividly evokes the on-the-ground ethical quagmire with a brilliant cast and a gripping script, written by director Joachim Lafosse (Our Children 2012 Festival). With a standout performance by previous festival guest Louise Bourgoin, the film offers no easy answers but rather leaves it to audiences to decide what to think.
