Newton Music Music Office: 676-5066 D e p a r t m e n t Main Office: 676-2002 Parents, 4/10/13 On Saturday, April 13 th the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) will be holding the annual Solo and Ensemble Competition at Fairlawn Local Schools for grades 7-8. Once again, Newton has a large number of students participating at this event and they have been working to prepare for it. I wanted to take this time to give you more details about the event while hopefully answering questions you may have about it. This experience can be positive and exciting for your child! What better way to prepare them for future life experiences like job interviews and evaluations. Each student is assigned a performance time and performance room by the contest administrators. At their specified time, they will go to their room and perform in front of a judge and an audience of their family and friends. YES! You are cordially invited and encouraged to attend this event. Even though they will probably deny it, seeing parents, relatives, and friends cheering them on makes this experience that much more meaningful. So please plan on spending some time with your child (or children) at Fairlawn on April 13 th! The finalized performance schedule and room map has been included in this packet. Report time on Saturday morning will be 6:15AM! Students are to be dressed up for the duration of the day! The contest will last until approximately 4:00pm and we should arrive back at Newton around 5:00pm. All participants must ride the bus to and from Newton and stay at the contest all day. I have always taken the attitude that the Newton Band and Choir support each other and in that spirit, we are much like a family. During the event, every student will be expected to attend each other s solos and ensembles unless they are getting ready for their own performance. As was previously mentioned, performing in front of a large, supportive group only helps and encourages each other! While at Fairlawn, food and drink will be offered at the cafeteria concession stand so each student will want some money for lunch and snacks. Please feel free to call or email me with any additional questions you may have. I always look forward to this day and I hope that you and your child are excited also. While I know the thought of performing a solo or ensemble is often frightening, I also know the benefits that come from a successful performance. I hope that you can encourage your child in the coming days and that together, we can strengthen their spirit and self-confidence. Musically, Jason Graham Director of Bands and Choirs *IMPORTANT* - Please double check the schedule to confirm your child s performance time. You will want to arrive plenty early so you can park and find their performance room. FYI - There is NO ADMISSION CHARGE to attend the contest and concessions are provided throughout the day.
