THE IRTH O THE ETERNAL OR STRING ORCHESTRA, IANO AND ERCUSSION Tatev Amiryan Candidate for the Doctoral of Musical Arts Degree University of MissouriKansas City, 2016 ASTRACT The irth of the Eternal is a onemovement comosition for string orchestra, iano and ercussion It is ritten as a centennial commemoration of the 1915 Armenian Genocide and honors the memory of the victims of the Genocide The iece symolizes reirth and revival and accentuates the oer of elief The main asects that contriute to the realization of the idea of the iece are its instrumentation, form, harmonic language and texture In the iece, instrumental timres lay secific roles in regard to the message of rememering The chimes, reresenting church ells, symolize the undying memory of the martyrs of the Genocide The static nature and the stretched sounds of the string section aim to create a feeling of the eternal and ork in comination ith the chimes The iano serves as a narrator and through this art I exress my on feelings and look to the ast The virahone aims to create a feeling of siritual aakening in comination ith the strings It also suorts the narrative function of the iano iii
The iece has a sectional, sequential structure that is similar to liturgy The asence of contrasts and dramatic conflict is exlained y the siritual nature of the comosition The musical language is tonal and is ased mostly on minor keys A major key is estalished for the first time only at the very end of the iece, thus highlighting its main concet moving through darkness to light The texture is mostly light, transarent and ethereal, in accordance ith the main message of the comosition iv

ROGRAM NOTES In 1915 the Ottoman Turks massacred 15 million Armenians The Ottoman government s systematic extermination of its on nonturkish and nonmuslim minority is marked in history as the Armenian Genocide; in fact, the very ord "genocide" as coined to descrie this articular event and the intentions ehind it As time assed, even after a hundred years, the ain of such an immense human loss remains alive among the Armenian eole, a ain that they carry in their lood from generation to generation Having survived this attemt at extermination in 1915, the Armenian eole today also mark that year as a time of revival Much like the myth of the hoenix, this dark age in history gave a ne irth, and a ne life to the Armenian eole, ho roved their great strength and resilience It also estalished a stronger elief among Armenians in their aility to endure This iece is a musical triute to my erished ancestors It is also a look ack to this most tragic eriod of Armenian history from a descendent of Genocide survivors and from a tentyfirst century ersective My ork is also a call for eace, ith a hoe that atrocities of this kind ill never again haen anyhere in the orld viii
