Teachers Guide This guide meets the following common core standards: READING: KEY IDEAS AND DETAILS 1. With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. 3. With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story. CRAFT AND STRUCTURE 4. Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text. FLUENCY 4. Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding. Step 1 Teachers Guide Pre-Reading Activity Brainstorm a list of things you might see on a farm. Then, as a class, sort the words into the following categories: Living things (animate): Nonliving things (inanimate):

Step 1 Teachers Guide Illustration 2009 by Melissa Iwai Comprehension Questions 1. Where are the children when they see the farm? Are there farms near where you live? 2. What is the farmer doing? What clues from the illustrations help you know? 3. What machine is the farmer using? Have you ever seen one work before? 4. What crop is the farmer planting? What clues from the text and illustrations make you think this? 5. Describe how the farmer feeds his plants. Why do you think this is important? Do all things that grow need to be fed? What do you like to be fed? 6. What is a seedling? Describe what it looks like. 7. Have you ever stopped by a farm? Why would you want to do that? 8. What is a stalk? What grows on a stalk? 9. Who picks the corn? Do you think picking corn is a hard or easy thing to do? Why? 10. Explain what happens at a farm stand. What clues did you use from the text and illustrations to answer? 11. What do the ears of corn look like? Do you like to eat corn on the cob? 12. Explain how the farmer and the family thank each other. Vocabulary/Word Study Add these high frequency words from the text to your word wall or create a board game (racetrack, snake, winding road) where students advance by being able to read and spell these words from the text: we, by, a, the, is, and, are, to, his, us, of, with. WORD SORTS: Have students divide a sheet of paper in half lengthwise and then make two categories: one syllable words and two syllable words. List the following words on the board and have them sort the words into the correct category. (Decide whether you d like them to work in pairs with a stronger reader paired with a developing one.) Or, put the words on index cards and have them take turns sorting the words in a learning center.

Words to sort: we, drive, by, a, farm, the, farmer, plows, the, field, dirt, is, brown, bumpy, ride, plants, seeds, yellow, small, and, skip, feeds, plants, seedlings, green, soft, stop, waters, stalks, strong, tall, race, picks, corn, bins, full, heavy, walk, stand, sells, ears, big, plump, help, count, carry, thanks, plenty, dinner. One syllable words: Two syllable words: Step 1 Teachers Guide VOCABULARY: Have students fill out the following chart from the words in the story. Then, share with a reading partner. New word: I understood it in the story: I think it means this: I can make up a sentence with the word: Plow Seedlings Stalks Heavy Plump Illustration 2009 by Melissa Iwai Tracie Vaughn Zimmer, author and literacy specialist, created this guide.
