1 2018-2019 SHS Marching Percussion Information Thank you for your interest in the Stevenson High School Marching Percussion Sections! This document includes information about marching percussion workshops, auditions, and rehearsals. All students interested in auditioning for battery (snare, bass, tenor, cymbals), and front ensemble instruments should prepare the exercises and excerpts as described on page 4. (Note that some of the spring/summer workshop times and the audition times have been altered slightly since the preliminary information document was distributed earlier this semester). It is highly recommended that all interested marching percussion applicants attend as many of the spring workshops as possible (listed on the next page) - the spring workshops will focus primarily on snare, tenor, and bass techniques although front ensemble and cymbals candidates are strongly encouraged to attend. Please bring a practice pad (Vic Firth Heavy Hitter Stock Pad or similar) and marching snare sticks (Pro Mark Jeff Ausdemore DC8 Marching Snare Sticks). Earplugs are also highly recommended. All percussion students should complete the rehearsal availability column on the Percussion Sections Calendar pages and the Information Form (page 10) and turn in a hard copy (stapled please) to Mr. Cooley or the SHS band office by April 25, 2018. An online individual audition sign-up form will be available on the SHS bands website under the percussion information tab - please complete the online form by April 25, 2018.

3 Summer Percussion Materials For the summer camps, we rehearse mostly outdoors. Therefore it is extremely important for your student s safety that they bring the following with them to every meeting: - athletic shoes (with a heel: important for proper marching technique/safety) - water bottle/jug (no sports drinks) - sunscreen - sunglasses - proper summer weather clothing In addition to the materials above, students need to bring: - 3 ring binder - plastic sheet protectors - sheet music and exercises - marching sticks - (earplugs are recommended) Marching in the summer weather while wearing a heavy instrument (battery members) is very physically demanding. Please let Mr. Cooley know of any medical/health concerns for your student related to the summer marching activities. (wcooley@d125.org)
4 2018-2019 SHS Marching Percussion Audition Instructions All Battery (snare, tenors, bass) candidates should prepare the Marching Percussion Audition/ Battery exercise packet. Front ensemble and cymbal candidates are encouraged but not required to prepare the battery packet. There are additional addendum exercises required for tenors, bass and keyboard percussion candidates. There are additional excerpts required for all percussion candidates. Bass Drums: all bass drum candidates should be prepared to play any of the 5 bass drum parts from the addendum and excerpt 2. Wind Players: all wind players that are unable to march their respective wind instruments for the marching band season due to health issues or instrument issues (oboe, bassoon etc) - may apply for a cymbal or front ensemble position (including synthesizer). Wind players should be prepared to play their respective excerpts and exercises (cymbals, keyboard percussion). - For all battery percussion candidates, please bring a practice pad (Vic Firth Heavy Hitter Stock Pad or similar) and marching snare sticks (Jeff Ausdemore DC8 Marching Snare Sticks or similar) to the audition. (earplugs are also recommended) - Front Ensemble candidates do not need to bring mallets to the audition - mallets will be provided for you. All battery exercises should be practiced with marking time - making sure that the entire foot lifts off the ground. The exercises should also be practiced with a metronome at the tempos indicated. Battery audition assessment criteria will primarily consist of technique, timing, sound quality and musicianship. Candidates should be able to demonstrate clear knowledge of proper grip and hand position, rebound/piston strokes, down strokes, up strokes, tap strokes, diddles, and flams.
5 Rehearsal Calendar Attendance for the marching percussion camps are extremely important for all members as the majority of the show music, playing/marching technique is covered then. Extra percussion instructional staff is also brought in specifically for the camps. The workshops during the summer are less formal than the camps and are intended as a means to keep in shape between the camp dates. (They are also subject to cancellation by Mr. Cooley). The expectation is that if the student is in town that day/week, they should attend the workshop. Though in the event that there is a conflict with vacations/trips, work, college visits etc, it is permissible to miss the workshop(s) with advance notice to Mr. Cooley. Attendance In order to develop a high quality performance and to have enjoyable and productive rehearsals, consistent attendance is very important. Please indicate any schedule conflicts in the appropriate column on the calendar pages. We will do our best to accommodate specific schedule conflicts within reason. Any absence that occurs during the year that is not indicated in this form should be communicated to Mr. Cooley in a timely manner and be limited to the excused list from the SHS Band Handbook for band performances that includes: - Personal Illness (*doctors note may be required), Funerals and Family Emergency (College Interviews, Religious Holidays and Weddings should be listed in advance) If significant absences occur during the season that are not listed in this form, a different percussion instrument may be assigned to the student at any time. SHS Fall Sports - SHS athletic conflicts will be considered on a case by case basis. Any student that intends to do both a fall sport and battery instrument should meet with their coach as well as Dr. Petway/Mr. Cooley to go over the feasibility of the two schedules - please understand that some athletic team s practice/game schedules may be prohibitive for battery membership. If a battery position is not possible for a student s schedule, a suitable position in the front ensemble will be found for the student instead.
