TODAY S MUSIC SERIES 20 DUETS BY RICHARD SHUEBRUK volume i: No 1-11 arranged or TWO lutes BY rits lee BL 215 BL - MUSIC HOLLAND
BL 215 TODAY S MUSIC SERIES reace These 20 duets are irst pulished in1920 y Richard Shueruk or trumpet and tromone Born in Bristol England August 2 1854 he came to the US in 1876 He oined the Boston Symphony trumpet section in the 1885-1886 season and ecame principal trumpet the next season or one year In the 1920s and 190s he was a music teacher in New York City and also played in the rederick Neil Innes (1854-1926) Band His advices as a teacher are still very useul: Don't low harder or the high notes; pinch tighter instead / It is never necessary to play noisily Anyody can play loud Artists only can play sot and well / As much conidence and attention is required to play with one other perormer as with a hundred others Thereore duet practice is the est sustitute or playing in the and / Duets are like conversation: you must listen as well as talk The duets are written with great imagination in authentic styles They are very melodious with eautiul harmonic and polyphonic structures Here you will ind them arranged or two lutes hence some changes had to e made to ollow Richard s ideas Because o today s conusion aout how to interpret old school music notation instructions have een added which are explained here in logical order Clarity - Make the music at most a lively discussion lay sentences divide them into logical phrases and take a rhythmic rest in-etween that contriutes to the low This has also the advantage that you can take a logical or even unnoticed reath Be sure that your astest runs are still understandale Doule-time - I the eat o a meter is divided y two the irst part seems to have more volume; i divided y our the irst and third part seem to e louder and so on This impression is independent o the real volume and originates rom our sense o meter and our inary hearing Along with the accent(s) o the meter we hear thereore other strong and weak eats also By giving in to this impression part o the original eat can e played as the new eat in such a way that a single ar emraces more weaker ars with the original meter count This is called doule-time and composers use it to prevent a sentence getting too much loud irst eats to let more tempi e heard simultaneously and or standing out Generally one is trusted to recognize it without notiication (see also Tempo mark) Inégale - This is playing the irst hal o the eat (in doule-time the irst hal o the new eat) a little it longer than the second one Normally the lengthening must e less than i the two parts were a triplet hence it is not possile to write that in notes It makes the eat audile (and is an expression tool) Syncopation - This is playing or composing a note originally on a strong eat earlier or later Being even shited to another strong eat or the original eat eing replaced y a weak note or a rest it is not always easy to discover a syncope The est way to eel it is playing a syncope or possile one at irst a ew times on the eat you expect it came rom A syncope is a surprise and must thereore e striking: give it at least the accent o the eat it suggests a suito piano a gliss or whatever olyphony - This means the accompaniment is a melody also An accompaniment can e total polyphonic or has notes or harmony and polyphonic ones as well So apart rom ovious polyphonic phrases use the rule: I the solo isn t moving might e still playing it s my turn Let s talk! Tempo mark - This is a short text aove the sta that indicates the speed impression o the shortest signiicant notes A mark with conlicting terms indicates doule-time (Andante moderato Allegro maestoso) Although the earliest description o these playing styles reers to aroque music they are hardly practiced in classical music today No wonder most perormances o music rom great masters as Bach Hotteterre Mozart Quantz Telemann and more sound very peculiar But now you can easily decide wether a three count piece is ust that or a latin or related azz walz or has to e played sostenuto (a style very oten used y these masters ut only heard in classical azz) You are now enlightened and will never misinterpret a piece with eats divided in our as a kind o psychotic march an insult to the composer eing incapale o writing a proper one at all Enoy playing this heart-warming music rom a great composer rits Lee April 201 Contents 1 rocessional 2 Hunting Scene Barcarolle 4 Minuet 5 The Cadets 6 The Sentry 7 Emilie 2 4 6 8 10 14 16 8 olonaise Militaire 9 Sonatina Allegro Theme and variations Rondo 10 Waltz 11 The Band asses 20 22 24 26 28 2 NOT UST A REMARK: NIET ZOMAAR EEN OMERKING: You copying rom this work without permission uttering your read with or without commission remind the day is doomed your wasted lie will linger or it's in act my ood that eeds your ilthy inger Wanneer i die uit dit werke copiëert dik o dun e oterhammen smeert moet e edenken dat e eens zal kwinen want in eite zin het wel de mine copyright 201 y BL - MUSIC The Netherlands
