Keep it in a safe pace for future reference.. Insta this unit in a coo, dry, cean pace away from windows, heat sources, sources of excessive vibration, dust, moisture and cod. Avoid sources of humming (transformers, motors). To prevent fire or eectrica shock, do not expose the unit to rain or water.. Never open the cabinet. If something drops into the set, contact your deaer.. Do not use force on switches, contros or connection wires. When moving the unit, first disconnect the power pug and the wires connected to other equipment. Never pu the wires themseves. 5. The openings on the cabinet assure proper ventiation of the unit. CONNECTIONS Never pug in this unit and other components unti a connections are competed. When making connections between this unit and other components, be sure a connections are made correcty, that is to say L (eft) to L, R (right) to R, + to + and to. Aso, refer to the owner s manua for each component to be connected to this unit. If you have YAMAHA components numbered as 1,,,, etc. on the rear pane, connections can be made easiy by ony connecting the output (or input) terminas of each component to the same-numbered terminas of this unit. CONNECTING SPEAKERS Connect the SPEAKERS terminas to your speakers with wire of the proper gauge, cut as short as possibe. If the connections are fauty, no sound wi be heard from the speakers. Make sure that the poarity of the speaker wires is correct, that is, + and markings are observed. If these wires are reversed, the sound wi be unnatura and ack bass. Do not et the bare speaker wires touch each other or the meta parts of this unit as this coud damage this unit and/or speakers. One or two speaker systems can be connected to this unit. If you connect ony one speaker system, connect it to either the SPEAKERS A or B terminas. Use speakers with the specified impedance shown on the rear of this unit. <China and Genera modes ony> Banana Pug connections are aso possibe. Simpy insert the Banana Pug connector into the corresponding termina. Engish How to Connect: Red: positive (+) Back: negative ( ) 1 ➀ Unscrew the knob. ➁ Insert the bare wire. [Remove approx. 5mm (1/ ) insuation from the speaker wires.] ➂ Tighten the knob and secure the wire. IMPEDANCE SELECTOR switch Be sure to switch this ony when the power to this unit is not on. Seect the position whose requirements your speaker system meets. WARNING Do not change the IMPEDANCE SELECTOR switch setting whie the power to this unit is on, otherwise this unit may be damaged. IF THIS UNIT FAILS TO TURN ON WHEN THE STANDBY/ON SWITCH IS PRESSED; The IMPEDANCE SELECTOR switch may not be set to either end cosey. If so, set the switch to either end cosey. If you use two pairs of speakers, the impedance of each speaker must be 1Ω or higher. ABOUT THE ACCESSORY TERMINALS AC OUTLET(S) (SWITCHED) GND termina (For turntabe use) (Europe, China and Genera modes) * 1 *... SWITCHED OUTLETS (U.K. mode)... 1 SWITCHED OUTLET Use these to connect the power cords from your components to this unit. The power to the SWITCHED outets is controed by this unit s STANDBY/ON switch or the provided remote contro transmitter s POWER key. These outets wi suppy power to any component whenever this unit is turned on. The maximum power (tota power consumption of components) that can be connected to the SWITCHED AC OUTLET(S) is 1 watts. Connecting the ground wire of the turntabe to this termina wi normay minimize hum, but in some cases better resuts may be obtained with the ground wire disconnected. 7

Press it again to turn this unit into the standby mode. Standby mode In this state, this unit consumes a very sma quantity of power to receive infrared-signas from the remote contro transmitter. Power indicator Lights up whie the power to this unit is on. Remote contro sensor Receives signas from the remote contro transmitter. SLEEP indicator Lights up whie the buit-in SLEEP timer is functioning. 7 TAPE MONITOR switch When the tape deck connected to the TAPE terminas on the rear of this unit is used for recording, you can monitor the sounds being recorded by pressing TAPE MONITOR so that TAPE MONITOR indicator ights up. INPUT seector When turned, seects a program source to isten to. The input source indicator for the currenty seected source ights up. 9 CD DIRECT AMP switch Press this switch inward to isten to a CD source in the purest sound. (Refer to page 1 for detais.) contro Used to raise or ower the voume eve. 5 Input source indicators The indicator for the source seected by the INPUT seector ights up. 6 TAPE MONITOR indicator Lights up whie the TAPE MONITOR switch is on. * When the tape deck (TAPE) is seected as the input source, this indicator wi not ight up even if the TAPE MONITOR switch is on. A PHONES jack When you isten with headphones, connect the headphones to the PHONES jack. When istening with headphones privatey, set both the SPEAKERS A and B switches to the OFF position. PHONES

B SPEAKERS switches Set the switch A or B (or both A and B) for the speaker system (connected to this unit) you wi use to the ON position. Set the switch for the speaker system you wi not use to the OFF position. C Tone contros BASS Used to increase or decrease the ow frequency response. The position produces fat response. TREBLE Used to increase or decrease the high frequency response. The position produces fat response. D BALANCE contro Adjusts the baance of the output voume to the eft and right speakers to compensate for sound imbaance caused by speaker ocation or istening room conditions. E Continuousy variabe LOUDNESS contro Used to compensate for the human ears oss of sensitivity to high and ow-frequency ranges at ow voume. REMOTE CONTROL TRANSMITTER The remote contro transmitter provided with this unit is designed to contro a the most commony used functions of this unit. If the CD payer, tuner, tape deck, etc. connected to this unit are YAMAHA components designed for remote contro compatibiity, then this remote contro transmitter wi aso contro various functions of each component. For Contro of This Unit 1 SLEEP timer key This unit is automaticay turned into the standby mode one hour after this key is pressed (so that SLEEP indicator ights up). YAMAHA HiFi SYSTEM REMOTE CONTROL TRANSMITTER AUX POWER key Turns the power to this unit on and turns this unit into the standby mode aternatey. Input seector keys Seect input source. 1 1 DIR A DIR B REC/PAUSE PLAY A/B PRESET + A/B/C/D/E DISC PLAY POWER SLEEP MD TAPE TUNER CD PHONO +/ keys Turn the voume eve up/down. For Other Component Contro Identify the remote contro transmitter keys with your component s keys. If these keys are identica, their functions wi be the same. For each key function, refer to the corresponding instruction in your component s manua. 1 Tape deck keys Contro tape deck. * DIR A, B and A/B are appicabe ony to doube cassette tape deck. * For a singe cassette deck with automatic reverse function, pressing DIR A wi reverse the direction of tape running. Tuner keys Contro tuner. +: Seects higher preset station number. : Seects ower preset station number. A/B/C/D/E: Seects the group (A E) of preset station numbers. INPUT Begin recording on the tape deck (or MD recorder etc.) connected to this unit. If the tape deck connected to the TAPE terminas on the rear of this unit is used for recording, you can monitor the sounds being recorded by pressing the TAPE MONITOR switch so that the TAPE MONITOR indicator ights up. Adjusting the BALANCE contro Using the CD DIRECT AMP switch Engish Adjust the baance of the output voume to the eft and right speakers to compensate for sound imbaance caused from speaker ocation or istening room conditions. L 5 5 R BALANCE You can enjoy the purest possibe CD sound from your CD payer by pressing this switch inward. By doing so, CD s input signas are sent to the buit-in specia ampifier for CD directy bypassing the INPUT seector, the BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE and LOUDNESS contros, and then sent to the power ampifier. This signa routing reproduces the purest CD sound eiminating any aterations to the CD signas. CD DIRECT AMP Adjusting the BASS and TREBLE contros 5 5 BASS 5 5 TREBLE Adjusting the continuousy variabe LOUDNESS contro This contro provides compensation for the human ears oss of sensitivity to high and ow-frequency ranges at ow voume. This contro is adjustabe to retain fu tona range at any voume eve. BASS : Turn this cockwise to increase (or countercockwise to decrease) the ow frequency response. TROUBLESHOOTING If the unit fais to operate normay, check the foowing points to determine whether the faut can be corrected by the simpe measures suggested. If it cannot be corrected, or if the faut is not isted in the SYMPTOM coumn, disconnect the power cord and contact your authorized YAMAHA deaer or service center for hep. SYMPTOM The unit fais to turn on when the STANDBY/ON switch is pressed, or turns into the standby mode suddeny soon after the power is turned on. It happens that this unit does not work normay. No sound. The sound suddeny goes off. Ony one side speaker outputs the sound. There is a ack of bass, and no ambience. Sound hums. The voume eve is ow whie paying a record. The voume eve cannot be increased, or sound is distorted. The sound is degraded when istening with the headphones connected to the compact disc payer or tape deck that are connected with this unit. Sound eve is ow. The input source cannot be changed, though the INPUT seector is turned. Using the BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE and LOUDNESS contros does not affect the tone. The remote contro transmitter does not work. The distance or range within which the remote contro transmitter can be used is short. CAUSE Power cord is not pugged in or is not competey inserted. The IMPEDANCE SELECTOR switch on the rear pane is not set to either end cosey. There is an infuence of strong externa noise (ightning, excessive static eectricity, etc.) or a misoperation on this unit whie using this unit. Incorrect output cord connections. Appropriate input source is not seected. The SPEAKERS switches are not set propery. Speaker connections are not secure. The protection circuit has been activated because of short circuit etc. The SLEEP timer has functioned. Incorrect setting of the BALANCE contro. Incorrect cord connections. The + and wires are connected in reverse at the ampifier or speakers. Incorrect cord connections. No connection from the turntabe to the GND termina. The record is being payed on a turntabe with an MC cartridge. The component connected to the REC terminas of this unit is turned off. This unit is in the standby mode. The LOUDNESS contro is functioning. The CD DIRECT AMP switch is ON. The CD DIRECT AMP switch is ON. Direct sunight or ighting (of an inverter type of fuorescent amp etc.) is striking the remote contro sensor of the main unit. The batteries of this remote contro transmitter are too weak. REMEDY Firmy pug in the power cord. Set the switch to either end cosey. Turn this unit into the standby mode and disconnect the AC power cord from the AC outet. After about seconds have passed, connect the power and operate this unit again. Connect the cords propery. If the probem persists, the cords may be defective. Seect an appropriate input source with the INPUT seector. Set the SPEAKERS switch which corresponds to the speakers to be used to the ON position. Secure the connections. Turn this unit into the standby mode, and then turn this unit on to reset the protection circuit. Cance the SLEEP timer function. Adjust it to the appropriate position. Connect the cords propery. If the probem persists, the cords may be defective. Connect the speaker wires in the correct phase (+ and ). Firmy connect the audio pugs. If the probem persists, the cords may be defective. Make the GND connection between the turntabe and this unit. The payer shoud be connected to the unit through the MC head ampifier. Turn the power to the component on. Turn the power to this unit on. Set the LOUDNESS contro to the FLAT position. Switch off the CD DIRECT AMP switch. The CD DIRECT AMP switch must be switched OFF to use those contros. Change position of the main unit. Repace the batteries with new ones. 1
