Discover Your Guide to the Season Aberdeen 2015/16 Welcome to the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra s 2015/16 Season A very warm welcome to the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra s 2015/16 concert season in the glorious Music Hall. Over the years that the BBC SSO has been performing in this wonderful venue, there have been numerous extraordinary and unforgettable concerts covering a vast range of repertoire. Many of those have of course been led by Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles. In this new season which will be the last for Donald in his current role he will conduct two programmes of music by two of the composers closest to his heart: Beethoven and Mahler. Donald will remain a key figure in the musical life of the BBC SSO and Scotland as he assumes his new role of Conductor Emeritus from 2016. We look forward to bringing him back to the Music Hall in future years following its much anticipated refurbishment. As a result of the planned closure in Spring 2016, our season this year is one concert less than normal. Of course we couldn t possibly miss our annual festive celebration on Friday 18 December and, on either side of Christmas, we bring some of the greatest music ever written, by composers including Mozart, Schumann and Mussorgsky. On behalf of everyone at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, I hope you have a wonderful time with us. Gavin Reid Director BBC SSO Donald Runnicles Chief Conductor Ilan Volkov Principal Guest Conductor Matthias Pintscher Artist-in-Association Laura Samuel Leader Thomas Dausgaard Chief Conductor-Designate BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra BBC Scotland City Halls, Candleriggs Glasgow G1 1NQ Email: bbcsso@bbc.co.uk bbc.co.uk/bbcsso facebook.com/bbcsso twitter.com/bbcsso youtube.com/bbcsso instagram.com/bbcsso Friday 25 September 2015, 7.30pm (c.20 mins) Glazunov Violin Concerto (c.84 mins) Mahler Symphony No.10 performing version reconstructed by Deryck Cooke James Ehnes violin Donald Runnicles conductor OPENING NIGHT: MAHLER 10 It was the artistic equivalent of the raising of the Titanic. When musicologist Deryck Cooke completed Mahler s unfinished final symphony, he uncovered a lost masterpiece filled with puzzles and allusions; a work where cries of love and cries of pain finally resolve in music of shattering honesty and heart-breaking beauty. This is music that explores the great questions of life; and as Donald Runnicles guides us to the heart of Mahler s final musical testament, there s no more powerful way to open our new season. The songful violin concerto by Russian Mendelssohn Alexander Glazunov forms the brightest of contrasts, and with the glorious tone of James Ehnes, it ll sparkle like new. With the exception of Christmas Classics, which will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland, all concerts are scheduled to be recorded for future transmission on BBC Radio 3. Discover Your Guide to the Season Aberdeen 2015/16 SCHUMANN S SECOND SYMPHONY Christmas Classics Friday 6 November, 7.30pm Mozart Symphony No.29, K.201 Haydn Piano Concerto in D Schumann Symphony No.2 Ronald Brautigam piano Markus Stenz conductor (c.21 mins) (c.36 mins) (c.27 mins) Symphonies didn t really come naturally to Robert Schumann, but love-songs did - and with its quiet poetry, joyous sunbursts and coded messages to his beloved Clara, his Second Symphony might just be the best he ever wrote. It s the exuberantly happy ending to a concert that begins with Mozart s joyous twenty-ninth symphony while Ronald Brautigam brings all his brilliance, style and wit to Joseph Papa Haydn s perfectlycut little jewel of a piano concerto. Guest conductor Markus Stenz and the BBC SSO bring pure sunshine to a November night. Friday 18 December, 7.30pm Jamie MacDougall singer and presenter Richard Balcombe conductor For its much-loved festive special, the orchestra brings a fine selection of Christmas music including carols for all the family, favourite works by Handel, Tchaikovsky, Malcolm Arnold, Irving Berlin and many more! Once again tenor and BBC Radio Scotland presenter Jamie MacDougall holds the whole affair together with wit and panache. If you are looking for a way to warm the cockles of your heart on a cold winter s night, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is the perfect way to spend an evening. Discover Your Guide to the Season Aberdeen 2015/16 MUSSORGSKY S PICTURES FROM AN EXHIBITION RUNNICLES CONDUCTS THE PASTORAL SYMPHONY Friday 12 February 2016, 7.30pm Glinka Valse fantaisie (c.7mins) Shostakovich Violin Concerto No.1 Mussorgsky (orch. Ravel) (c.35 mins) Pictures from an Exhibition Boris Brovtsyn violin Alexander Vedernikov conductor (c.40 mins) Friday 11 March, 7.30pm Debussy Prélude à l après-midi (c.9 mins) d un faune (c.31 mins) Mozart Piano Concerto No.24, K.491 (c.46 mins) Beethoven Symphony No.6 Pastoral Christian Blackshaw piano Donald Runnicles conductor Glinka and Mussorgsky made Russian music glitter with the colours of a Fabergé egg; a century later in the Soviet Union, Dmitri Shostakovich is said to have lamented a life turned grey. But there are few more gripping documents of that life than his First Violin Concerto; a brooding political thriller of a piece, with a core of raw emotion. The award-winning Moscow-born violinist Boris Brovtsyn grew up immersed in its world; as the former music director of the Bolshoi, meanwhile, Alexander Vedernikov, is perfectly placed to bring out all the drama, the spectacle, and the undercurrent of passion in both Glinka s ballroom romance and Mussorgsky s fantastic musical picture gallery. Images: Boris Brovtsyn Alexander Vedernikov Mozart s dramatic Piano Concerto No.24, played here by British pianist and Mozart specialist Christian Blackshaw, is an ideal companion-piece for Beethoven s much-loved (and deceptively relaxed) Pastoral symphony. To open the evening, the quiet revolution of Debussy s sensuous Prélude à l aprèsmidi d un faune. Image: Donald Runnicles by Simon Pauly
