CARDINAL CARTER ACADEMY FOR THE ARTS MUSIC BAND Grade 9 AUDITION REQUIREMENT SHEET Audition Information: The audition is divided into 4 parts: 1. Solo piece performance: candidates will choose and prepare an unaccompanied musical selection highlighting their musical and technical abilities on their instrument. 2. Ear test: candidates will compare pitches of two notes played on the piano, and clap back a 4-6 measure rhythm. This part also includes singing or humming a short melody that is played on the piano. 3. A Sight Reading test: candidates will play an entry level appropriate musical excerpt chosen for them by the audition panel. 4. Interview: candidates will speak about their interests, personal goals, previous musical experiences, favourite artists, etc. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: The CCAA Band program is designed for students interested in playing on a concert band instrument. For a list of these instruments, and for more information on the auditioning process for each grade level, please refer to the information provided in this package on: on auditioning, theory requirements, solo repertoire, and preparation advice. Refer specifically to the information for your requested grade of entry. REQUIRED DRESS: ARRIVAL: WHAT TO BRING: ADJUDICATORS: Wear smart, casual, comfortable clothing. Candidates are asked to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled audition time. They will sign in, and be directed to the appropriate place for their individual warm up. The candidate should bring their instrument, mouthpiece and reed (we can provide Percussion instruments and a Tuba if needed). Three (3) copies of the music for their solo piece selection, and any missing registration items. The adjudicating teams consist of teachers and professional artists. Auditions are private. The decision of the adjudicating team is final.

Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts Grade 9 Instrumental Band Audition Information For a list of Band instruments, see attachment in this package. There is no Piano or Guitar program at Cardinal Carter. AUDITION PROCESS Gr. 9 applicants to Instrumental-Band will audition with their instrument of choice. If auditioning with Piano, please refer to: Gr. 9 Instrumental Band Audition with Piano information attached. The Audition for the Grade 9 Band program is 10-15 minutes, and will consist of four (4) parts: 1. An unaccompanied solo performance of one piece of music of your choice at the Grade 2-3 Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) level or higher, not exceeding 3 minutes in length. No school ensemble repertoire please. You may be asked to play a few one-octave scales as well. 2. An ear test where you will compare pitches of two notes played on the piano and clap back a rhythm consisting of 2-4 bars. A third part of the ear test will consist of singing or humming a short melody that is played for you on the piano. 3. A sight reading test at the Grade 9 entry level. See attachment in this package for examples. 4. An interview with members of the auditioning panel (questions about favourite artists on your instrument, personal goals, interests, musical experiences etc.) WHAT TO PREPARE Prepare a short (5 minute maximum) unaccompanied solo piece of music of your choice highlighting your musical and technical abilities. Examples of appropriate pieces (min. RCM Grade 2) can be found and purchased from the RCM website at: https://examinations.rcmusic.ca/publications. Approach your music teacher for advice. Prepare at least one (1) major scale or chromatic scale all tongued and all slurred HOW TO PREPARE Practice regularly, and correctly Have someone play short melodies for you to sing or hum back Have someone clap short rhythmical excerpts for you to clap back Perform your selected piece for your family and friends as many times as possible WHAT TO BRING Three (3) copies of the music for your solo piece selection. Your instrument, mouthpiece and reed (we will provide a Tuba and Percussion instruments if needed) Any missing registration items (recent report card, arts reference letter, classroom teacher s reference) A copy of any RCM Examination Certificates for Theory or Instrumental examinations taken to date, if available. Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts Gr. 9 Instrumental - Band Audition with Piano For students auditioning on Piano, but who would like to join the Band program. For a list of band instruments, see our attachment in this package. There is no Piano or Guitar Program at Cardinal Carter. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Based upon a successful audition on the Piano, you will be given a conditional status. We will recommend a suitable band instrument for you to play, and help you find a private music teacher. These lessons are to be paid for by the applicant. Willingness to play any of the band instruments selected for you is essential. A second audition will be scheduled in late spring, where you will need to demonstrate your progress on the selected band instrument. There is NO Piano program at CCAA. Cardinal Carter s primary entry years are grades 7 and 9. We welcome auditions for other grades and offer placement based on availability. Candidates on a waitlist will be considered for admissions as space permits until the end of September 2017. Frequently Asked Questions Q. What is a concert band instrument? A. It is a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument of western classical music. Q. I do not yet play a concert band instrument. Can I audition with another instrument? A. It is possible to audition with another instrument e.g. the Piano, however, after a successful audition on the Piano you will be asked to start playing a concert band instrument. The music staff will have the final decision in assigning a new instrument. Q. Can I play the Piano at CCAA? A. We do not have a Piano program at our school, however there are many opportunities to play the Piano such as an accompanist, in jazz band, assemblies, liturgies etc. Q. How can I prepare for the audition? A. A good way to prepare is to take some private lessons from a specialist teacher on the instrument. Q. How can I find a suitable private music teacher to help prepare me for a successful audition? A. We have a list of excellent instrumental specialists who have been working with our students for many years. Please send us an email with your request. Q. I am auditioning for Grade 7, and do not play a band instrument yet? What can I do to prepare? A. You may audition by playing another instrument such as the Piano. If your audition is successful, we will assign you to start on a concert band instrument when you start at CCAA. Q. I am planning to audition for Grade 11. Is there additional information available to help me prepare? A. Please visit our website to access a more detailed list of: expectations for entering at later than Grade 9 level. Q. How many music courses will I take each year? A. Each student obtains two Music credits each year: One for in-class work, and another for the ensemble rehearsals and performances. In Grade 12, there is one mandatory credit and one optional credit. Q When are rehearsals scheduled and are they optional? A. Typically, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m.-3:15 p.m. are course Rehearsal/Studio Schedules. This is a mandatory credit called Exploring the Arts. However, rehearsals can take place after school as well (3:00 p.m. 4:30 p.m.), and they are still considered to be mandatory. Q How many different ensembles can I be a member of? A. You can participate in as many ensembles as your schedule allows. We have various levels of concert band ensembles, orchestra, jazz band, chamber ensembles and musical theatre ensembles. Program Information CCAA offers an enriched and accelerated music program which provides the following: 1. An accelerated technical and musical skills development. 2. Performance skills development through various performance opportunities. 3. Solo and small ensemble skills development. 4. Theoretical aspects of music (historical, analytical). 5. Guest workshops and excursions. The Ideal Candidate is: Focused, disciplined, and hard working Self-motivated, dedicated to their work and passionate about the creative process and performance. Able to balance the demands of the CCAA music and academic program, and their outside interests.
