Interactive Map Project By Kiril Pavlov

Map of Germany Map of Japan Map of Serbia Secondary research on maps Map of Spain Map of Italy Map of France

During the 1920s, Harry Beck worked as an engineer draughtsman at the London Underground Signals Office. Harry Beck In 1931, he processed a radical new design to illustrate the rapidly expending underground system. Beck could see that the network had become too big to represent geographically, and worked on a solution to the problem in his own time. Beck s solution was to map the network schematically, using a system based on electrical circuit diagrams. The Underground s publicity department initially rejected his proposal, thinking it too radical. However, after he made a series of modifications, the design was approved. A trial pocket version was published in 1933, just before the Underground became part of the London Passenger Transport Board.

What is Interactive Media? Interactive Media is essentially a way for people to communicate trough a combination of electronic text, graphics, moving images and sound into a structured digital environment. The digital world could include people interacting with the Internet, Telecom or even interacting with a digital TV. There are a large verity of interactive media, ranging from people interacting with characters inside a video game or them interacting with other people from all around the world, creating brilliant animations, presentations, maps to help people across their local mall or even across the world, helping people transfer money in a digital environment and much more.

What does Interactive Media have to offer in terms of a Interactive Map? One of the main usages for the Interactive Maps would be that depending on the map, it could have different usages. For example, one of the most common Interactive maps that you would fine is Google Maps. It is a map of the entire would that you could interact with to find out where you would want to go or if you are not sure where the place is. Another example of an Interactive Map would be the digital maps that you find in Malls mostly. They are designed to pinpoint your location in the mall and where all the shops, café s, restaurants and so on. One of the main equipment that is used in Interactive Map is based on what type it is. For example, Google Maps is mainly web based, so the only way to access it is through the computer or a hand held device, like the iphone. On the other hand, the interactive maps that you find in malls are more screen protected based, since you physically interact with it. It also has a built in touchscreen feature for easy usage. The way that most maps would function is either trough a hyperlink that will send you the location that the picture or text said or would give you several options for different results. This statement applies both on Website maps or physical interactive maps. With physical interactive maps, you could physically touch the screen on the text that is given on the screen itself to select that option.

What does Interactive Media have in terms of Tools? One of the main usages of the Tools in Interactive Media would be tools mainly used in a form of art. For example. Adobe Flash is a great example. The use for Adobe Flash would be to create a digital animation of a short story, which you could later post online for the world to see. Another great example of a tool is Adobe InDesign. It is basically a better version of Word, offering a load more verity of options and tools to create a nice piece of written work. Another example would be Adobe Photoshop. The purpose for this tool would be to manipulate and play around with any from of pictures or drawings. You could add and remove backgrounds, effects and even make small animations on it. Final example would be Adobe Illustrator. What it s mainly used for is to create amazing illustration of buildings, people or even frames for animations. There are many more tools that you could use, but these are one of the main tools that I ve used. What does Interactive Media have in terms of Computers/Laptops? A computer is one of the main reasons why we have all these interactive devices today. It was the first one to have almost all the features for the Hand Held Devices, Consoles and so on.

What does Interactive Media have to offer in terms of a Consoles? One of the main usages of the Consoles is people are allowed to interactive in a digital environment with either other people online or with the programmed NPC (Non-Player Character). You could also interact with the options that are provided in the Consoles themselves. Another interactive feature that you could do is similar to the Computer. Where you could go onto the internet and interact with people trough social media. But the main features for the Console is to either play games or watch movies. Consoles like the PS1 to 3 run their own Operating System called Unix-like. Most consoles are web-based, considering that every console that has come out in the recent years, such as the ps3, xbox 360 or even the ps2, with its chip, have the same capability of connecting to the internet as a computer would. Most of the audiences that were intended for the console to be used are people that play video games, watch movies or even want to chat with people. But the main purpose is for entertainment.

What does Interactive Media have to offer in terms of Hand Held Devices? What it tends to often offer to the everyday user is a hand held device know as a Android. What an Android basically is, a less powerful version of a Computer, but has very similar usages to it. In regards to connecting to the Internet or even storing large amounts of data going all the way up to 64 GB. One of the major differences between those two devices is that the Android has the capability to be held almost anywhere with ease and the ability to take pictures, thanks to it s built in camera. One of the major things to notice in the Android is that there is a specific tool that you can use to run any Operating System on the device, such as Windows or Linux that is targeted to work only with the hand held device, which is called SDK. Apple has a similar tool for the ios (with the Objective-C SDK and Mac OS X native layer), but they tend to focus their Operating System on Linux more than how the Android does. The main purpose for the Hand Held Devices, such as an iphone or Android is to give the user access to the internet or even give the user a form of entertainment. For example, the user could use the internet for research on a subject that they are doing or they could use it to watch a video or even play mobile games. There are other forms of Hand Held Devices, such as the Nintendo 3DS, Gameboy Advance. Those are mainly used for entertainment. Back in 2007, the first iphone was released had the first ever feature of touchscreen, which phones later on such as the Android also adapted on. Most iphones and Androids had the features of internet access, video playback, microphone, screen protectors, movement sensors (if you have a case) and even apps. They were also portable, which would allow the user to use it almost anywhere. The audience for this is almost anyone, from children to elder people. But its intended audience was for people that need a quick access and easy access to the internet.

What usage does ATM s have in terms of Interactive Media? ATM s (Automatic Teller Machine) main interactive usage is to receive cash from them, if you have any money in a debit/credit card. Some of the ATM s have a touch screen feature which would allow the user to select an option of Fast Cash, Cash Withdrawal, Balance Check, Deposit and Statements. Most of the ATM s now a days are using the Operating System of Windows XP, CE or even Windows 2000. Most of the ATM s are screen protected, since they are supposed to be physically interacted with by either buttons or screen touch. Most of the clients that the ATM s are intended to be used by people that either have a bank account or business that would allow money to be transferred into their bank account. The main thing that would be seen in how an ATM machine is built is programming, screen protector, screen sensor (aka screen touch). The way that people would normaly access the ATM s is trough etnering their credit/debit card in the designated slot and entering their 4 digit pin number onto the pad below.

What usage does Self Checkouts have in terms of Interactive Media? The main usage that the self-checkout machines have is for people who would rather scan the product themselves and pay for it. You would usually find these in stores and supermarkets. The self checkouts have a similar function to an ATM. The main similarity is that you can scan in a debit/credit card in a specific slot designed for it and transfer the payment like that. They are also screened based. That way, it will allow the user to visually see the amount of money they will be paying for their items. The operating system that self checkouts mainly are programmedwith is called POS. The way that the Self Checkouts work is that the machine is programmed to identify the barcodes that have been placed on every product and just as the person at the cashier scans it with the scanner, it has a little space in the middle of the self checkout where peopel could scan the item themselves. After they have scanned their item, they then enter their credit/ debit card into the slot and they enter their pin, which is the way people pay for the product.

What usage does TV s have in terms of Interactive Media? Some TV s now have a touchscreen feature. Previously, there would be buttons on the TV screen frame and some of them still do, but now some of them have removed that feature and you are physically able to touch the screen and it would work as if you were pushing the buttons. They also have screen protectors as well. One of the main usages that people would have for the TV s is either to be entertained most of the times or get information by listening to the news. The other usages was to commercialise movies, shows and products.
