Name: Independent Book of Your Choice 7th Grade Summer Assignment (Worth 100 points) 7th Grade LA ~ Ms. Glidden Hello future 7th graders! Mrs. Campeta and I have worked together to create a summer reading assignment for you to complete before beginning the school year. You will be responsible for reading a fiction novel of your choice and completing a book report. Your choice of reports include: trash can book report, poster book report, classic book report, or cereal box book report. The requirements for each of these types of projects are attached to this packet. The rubric for grading is the same rubric Ms. Lawrence uses, and will be graded by Ms. Glidden when you return from summer break. It includes the following items: 1. Directions for specific book report template are followed correctly: (80 points) --book report contains all specified elements --paragraphs have 7 or more sentences each --paragraphs stay focused and on topic --each paragraph contains topic sentence, supporting/detail sentences, and conclusion sentence --report is typed or completed in blue or black ink (40pts) /80 pts 2. Neatness/Presentation (10 pts) /10pts 3. Report contains no spelling, punctuation, capitalization, or grammar errors (10 points) /10pts TOTAL = /100 points Teacher Comments:

Trash Can Book Report Materials Needed: 1 small trash can 7 items that you can find at home or you created on your own that your character might throw away 7 paragraphs, one for each item that you put in your report, explaining how the item relates to your character and why they threw the object away. Put these on a separate piece of paper. The paragraphs must be in your best handwriting or typed. Lots and LOTS of Creativity- Be creative, have fun, but do not be silly Directions : Pick a major character in your story. Think about the characters traits: their thoughts, actions, feelings, favorite things. Find 7 objects around your house (or create them) that the character might throw away. You will have to write/type one paragraph explaining how the object relates to the character and why they threw the object away. For example: Book= Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Item one: A crumpled up letter to Sirius Explanation: Harry wrote to Sirius throughout the book to let him know how his training was going. He never wrote, Dear Sirius, he always called him, Padfoot which is why the letter in the trash says, Dear Padfoot. Harry had a difficult time trying to tell Sirius everything he wanted to without giving away Sirius location or identity. So, many of the letters Harry wrote, he had to tear up and write another draft if his letter wasn t in code. Other items that could be found in Harry Potter s trash: - A Bertie Bott s every-flavor bean wrapper - A chocolate frog card - A love letter to Cho Chang - Owl feathers from Hedwig - His broken glasses You will take each item out of the bag, read your corresponding paragraph(s) with the item and show it to the class. **Your project will be graded on your analysis of the character and the selection of 7 items; the thought put into selecting each item; the content, spelling and grammar of the paragraphs; preparation and orderliness of the presentation; and creativity.**

Book Report Poster Get a piece of poster board and construct a Book Report Poster. Your poster must include the follow elements. You may design the elements however you would like. 1) Title of your book 2) Author of your book 3) Picture(s) and paragraph (7 sentences) describing the setting of your book 4) Picture(s) and paragraph (7 sentences) describing the main characters of your book 5) Plot timeline: Use several pictures (each with a sentence or two near the picture) describing the main parts of the plot (what happens in the story) 6) Personal Review: write a paragraph (7 sentences) explaining what you liked, did not like, favorite part, things you might have changed in the story, and whether or not you would recommend the book to friends All written parts should be typed or neatly written in blue or black ink. Pictures may be hand drawn or printed from the Internet.

Cereal Box Book Report The idea of this book report is to sell your book. You want to make others want to buy (read) your book using the same marketing techniques that cereal companies use to sell their cereal. You will need to use the two templates that you will cut out and paste on your box. Before you begin, you need to: a) finish your book b) get an empty cereal box c) cover the cereal box with some kind of paper (wrapping paper, brown paper bags, etc.) d) print out the templates that you will fill in and glue on your box (or get them from class) e) get scissors and a glue stick or tape FRONT OF BOX: Use a piece of white or light colored paper to cover the front of your cereal box. (You will probably want to create the cover before gluing it on your box.) Include the name of the cereal and a picture. Invent a name for the cereal that is related to the title of the book and sounds like a cereal. Do not use the exact title of the book. Choose a shape for the cereal as well as colors and ingredients that all relate to the book. For example, for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you might invent a cereal called Wizard Wands, a toasted oat cereal in the shape of miniature lightning bolts. RIGHT SIDE: (Use template) Make a list of ingredients that includes the two story elements Characters and Setting. Under the heading "Ingredients," list the main characters and write a sentence about each one. Then describe the setting. You can use the template on the attached sheet or cover the side with white or light colored paper and do it in your own way. Just make sure you include the main characters and the setting. LEFT SIDE: (Use template) Write a summary that describes the main problem and the solution of the book. Try to use words that will grab readers attention and make them want to buy your cereal. You can use the attached template or do this in your own way. BACK OF BOX: Design a game that is based on the story. It can be a puzzle, a word search, a word scramble, a maze, a crossword puzzle, a hidden pictures illustration, or any other fun activity that might be found on the back of a cereal box. Make sure it includes information from the book. TOP OF BOX: (Use template) Include the title, author, number of pages, and number of stars you would give this book if you were a book critic. The maximum number of stars would be 5. You can use the template or create the top of the box yourself as long as you include all of the things listed above. PRIZE: Cereal boxes often include a prize. Your prize must be something the main character could have used in the book or something that reminds you of the main character. You can even include a picture of the prize on the front of your box to let the reader know what is inside the box.

Classic Book Report As you read your book, use the boxes below to takes notes about your book. Use your notes to write a 5 paragraph essay about your book. Your 5 paragraph essay must be typed or neatly printed in blue or black ink. Remember, a paragraph has 7 sentences.
