A FERRY THROUGH FOLK & FAIRY TALES A Exhilaration, ecstasy and enthusiasm flooded the Kamaraj Arangam on 30th July for it was time for PSBB s biggest fest, the school anniversary, Abhinaya2016. The 59th edition of this total theatre titled kathai kathaiyaam kaaranamaam highlighted the importance of stories in our lives, and the tremendous impact of the memories they leave behind. The programme commenced with an invocation to the Almighty. This was followed by the most awaited Reflections-2015 which brought out in a nutshell, the various activities the schools had undertaken through the course of the year, and gave due recognition to the students for all their achievements. Dr. Ambika Kameshwar, the founder and director of RASA, the "Theatre for Holistic Development" was the Chief Guest and she captivated the audience by her magical smile and powerful words on the unifying effect of art forms. She relished the ambience charged with energy and glorified the Dean and Director, Dr. Mrs. YGP, for being an epitome of passion and vibrant energy. Sequentially, the life story of Mr. Selvakumar, an alumnus of PSBB was unravelled. This highlighted that Ordinary men do extraordinary things! Beginning his journey as the son of a domestic worker, this man grew up to initiate the Kalvialaya and provide schooling for several underprivileged children in a village near Chengalpet. The story of my life justifies the title of the anniversary, Mrs. YGP being the karanam of my kathai said Mr.Selvakumar. He was conferred the title of Siksha Seva Rathnam, in recognition of his noble deeds! The cultural programme began with Enchanting Folksytantra, which brought out the importance of happiness, friendship, and unity through several fables. The Moustache Maniac was an interesting story that extolled the significance of a heart smile. This was followed by Tell Me Again Stories, which depicted the wit of various characters. This included a Tenali Raman tale where his mind-blowing problem solving skills came to the fore, and a talefrom Rajasthan highlighting the presence of mind of a young girl who helped save an entire village!
Cultural links across the globe were illustrated by the similarities in folklores and myths.the Lady and the Tramp was akin to the snake and mongoose story but had a happy ending. It was incredible when the similarities between Bhima and Bhakasura and the Greek myth Of Theseus and Minotaur were highlighted on stage using splendid props. Taking the audience through the Archway of Abundance the dancers unfolded the story of The Akshayapathram and the Greek Cornucopia. Rahasyam parama rahasyam was a hilarious musical skit in Tamil with a valuable message on the dangers of eavesdropping.
The Royal Talisman was an opera narrating the story of King Arthur and King Vikramaditya whose sword and throne were tactfully given to Richard and Bhoj respectively.the floating music and the graceful dance made the opera a unique performance. Well known tales of Prince Siddartha and the swan and the Japanese folk tale of the crane were mesmerising because of the lilting music and the innovative colourful costumes.
The fabulous evening concluded with Caravans On The Silk Route. The Silk route not only helped in trade but also transported tales.this portrayed the different versions of the fairy tale, Cinderella culminating in a fairy tale wedding. In an opulent setting guests from India, Germany Spain and U.K.made their appearance and danced in joy! The stage, brimming with bubbly participants was a true delight to the eyes! A thousand participants, a canvas of heroes,heroines,kings,jesters, courtiers elements of Nature,a pot-pourri of art forms and a recurring signature song made Kathai Kathaiyam Karanamam an epic production of PSBB
The Sherwood forest came alive with Robinhood and his men.the shadow play in the Marionettes' message added colour to the show.
