Using Endnote Introduction Endnote has three important functions: Searching online databases and importing references Storing and managing bibliographic references Creation and output of bibliographies and intext citations in a variety of styles 1
Endnote Library: viewing and sorting Double click on this icon to open a new reference for manual input Click on the field in order to sort the references The selected references can be viewed in the viewing window below. Double click to view in a new window to edit The viewing pane shows the way in which the reference will look in the final bibliography Editing references The editing window can be used to manually input a reference or to edit an imported references 2
Creating a new reference Start a new line for each author. Comma after the surname full stop after name/initial. For corporate authors follow with a comma Use this drop down menu to choose the type of reference you would like to input. This will determine which fields are displayed Close the new reference (x) to return to the Endnote library Searching the Endnote Library Endnote allows you to search your references on any field. Alternatively you can click on the search icon 3
Searching the Endnote Library Type the search item in the Search box and select the field you want to search by (for author search by surname only). Then click search To view the full list of references select References Show all references from the toolbar or Ctrl+H Customising the Endnote Library view Click on this option to customise the main library window Select display fields to change fields on display Use the drop down windows to choose which fields to display Click apply to save the changes 4

How many references are there for the years 1999, 2000 and 2001? Dealing with Duplicates Select to show the duplicates Use this to find duplicate references Select to delete the duplicates 6
Cite While you Write Right click the toolbar in Word to show Cite While you Write toolbar in Word Make sure that the Endnote option is ticked Cite While you Write Go to Endnote library Select reference in Endnote Library then use this icon to insert in text citation into word text This icon allows you to organise your in text citations into a bibliography This reverses the formatting of the bibliography 7
Cite While you Write: Format Bibliography Click on icon to format bibliography Click on the layout tab to change the font style or size Use the dropdown menu or the browse icon to choose the output style Changing Output Style Open Style manager to change the output style Tick favourite styles in so that they appear in the dropdown style menu 8
Copy and paste the original styles (Endnote/Styles) onto your home space Ensure that the style folder is linked to where you have saved the copied files In Endnote preferences click on Folder locations Editing Output Style Edit output style Use the options to make any required changes to the output style 9
Editing in-text citation Right click on citation in order to add page number Click on edit citation to add page numbers Select reference then add page numbers into the suffix section Accessing remote databases from Endnote Select connect icon Choose the database you would like to connect to You can use the find option to look for databases 10
Accessing remote databases from Endnote Searching online in PubMed Use the dropdown menus to search This gives the number of references which the search returns Select OK to view the references Importing reference from remote databases Use this option to copy selected references to existing or new library Select required references using shift key 11

Select send to File Open PubMed and conduct search as normal Tick required reference for export Importing references from PubMed Save file somewhere easy to find with a clear name 16
