Dimensions... 6 1. General This document describes the installation of the WCH-SSH Slack Storage Housing manufactured by Corning Cable Systems. 2. Description 2.1 The WCH-SSH is a wall mountable slack storage unit designed to hold splice trays and cable slack. The unit will support a WCH housing and has 1x 3-inch knockout(s) in its cover for hidden cable routing directly to the WCH. 2.2 Two Slack Storage Housings are available: The WCH-SSH-2 designed to hold a WCH-02P and a WCH-SSH-4-12 designed to hold a WCH 04P, 06P, 08P, and 12P. 2.3 Splice trays are secured inside the housing with a Velcro strap. The WCH-SSH-4-12 accomodates up to eight 0.2-inch or four 0.4-inch splice trays including M67, M68, and UST-024. The WCH-SSH-2 accomodates four 0.2-inch or two 0.4- inch splice trays (M67-042, 060, 061, and 068). p/n 003-448

Tools and Materials Tools and materials needed to install the WCH-SSH include Phillips screwdriver Slotted screwdriver 216B tool Needle-Nose Pliers Black Felt-Tip Pen Strain-Relief Kit (supplied) 4. Precautions Read and understand precautions for the cable and splicing method you are using (Figure 2). WARNING: Never look directly into the end of a fiber that may be carrying laser light. Laser light may be invisible. Laser light can damage your eyes. Viewing it directly does not cause pain. The iris of the eye will not close involuntarily as when viewing a bright light. Consequently, serious damage to the retina of the eye is possible. Should accidental eye exposure to laser light be suspected, arrange for an eye examination immediately. WARNING: DO NOT use magnifiers in the presence of laser radiation. Diffused laser light can cause eye damage if focused with optical instruments. Should accidental eye exposure to laser light be suspected, arrange for an eye examination immediately. WARNING: Cleaved glass fibers are very sharp and can pierce the skin easily. Do not let cut pieces of fiber stick to your clothing or drop in the work area where they can cause injury later. Use tweezers to pick up cut or broken pieces of the glass fibers and place them on a loop of tape kept for that purpose alone. Good housekeeping is very important. The wearing of safety glasses to protect the eyes from accidental injury is strongly recommended when handling chemicals and cutting fiber. Pieces of glass fiber are very sharp and can damage the cornea easily. NOTICE: Fiber optic cable is sensitive to excessive pulling, bending and crushing forces. Consult the cable specification sheet for the cable you are installing. Do not bend cable more sharply than the minimum recommended bend radius. Do not apply more pulling force to the cable than specified. Do not crush the cable or allow it to kink. Doing so may cause damage that can alter the transmission characteristics of the cable the cable may have to be replaced. Figure 2

SSH Mounting (to the wall) WCH-SSH-4-12 L: 19.5 in (49.53 cm) H: 10.5 in (26.67 cm) L WCH-SSH-2 L: 10.06 in (25.55 cm) H: 7.37 in (18.73 cm) H 5.1 Open the front door of the unit. Place the housing on the wall mounting surface. Mark the four mounting holes with a black felt-tip pen. Mounting surface should be flat to prevent warping. 5.2 Drive anchors or wood screws in at these locations leaving a 1 /8-inch gap between the mounting surface and screw or bolt-head. Figure 3 NOTE: Mounting hardware not provided. 5.3 Place the unit on the mounting hardware and tighten the hardware. 6. WCH Mounting (to the SSH) 6.1 Remove the appropriate knockouts in the SSH door and the WCH backplate (Figure 4). 6.2 Start screws in the appropriate holes in the door of the SSH (Figure 4). Four screws are provided in the kit. 6.3 Place the WCH on the screws and tighten the screws. Figure 4

Page 4 SRP-003-448 Issue 3 7. Cable Strain Relief Both the aramid or fiberglass yarn and the central member are secured with a U-shaped washer and a bolt. Wrap yarn between the U-shaped washer and the side of the bracket. Insert the metallic central member between the U-shaped washer and the flat washer. Tighten the nut. Cable Ties Figure 5 7.1 If the cable you are installing has aramid or fiber-glass yarn and a central member, strain-relieve it using the strain-relief bracket and hardware provided. Buffer Tubes: 266 cm (105 in) plus length required in tray Yarn: 15 cm (6 inches) CABLE Central Member: 8 cm (3 inches) 33 cm (13 in) of spiral wrap starting 2.5 cm (1 in) from sheath 7.2 Remove cable sheath as specified in instructions for the cable you are installing. Suggested lengths are illustrated in Figure 6. 7.3 Insert the square neck bolt from one side of the strain-relief bracket. Wrap the aramid yarn around the bolt on the opposite side of the strain-relief bracket from which the bolt was inserted. Place U- shaped washer over the square neck bolt. Insert the central member in the U-shaped washer and place the 2 flat washers on top and secure with the wing nut provided. 7.4 Use cable ties for additional strain relief (Figure 5). NOTE: Avoid overtightening the cable ties. Overtightening may cause macro/micro bending and damage the cable. Figure 6

Splicing 8.1 If you are installing splice trays, complete splicing and tray routing per instructions for the tray and splicing method you are using. 8.2 Secure the trays with a Velcro strap (Figure 7). 9. Cable Routing Thread through hole in cover of SSH and backplate of WCH Cable Strain- Relief Bracket Splice Trays Secure with Velcro strap. 9.1 When installing the WCH to a SSH, leave some unsecured cable slack in the slack storage housing to allow access into the SSH cabinet without damaging the fibers or buffer tubes when opening the cabinet. Route cables inside the housing as illustrated in Figure 7. 9.2 When closing the unit, make sure none of the fibers will be pinched when the front panel is replaced. Figure 7
