Summer 2010 Inside President Elect page 3 ChoralNet Community page 4 Men s Choir News page 5 Pieces for Women s Choir page 6 KYACDA Leadership page 7 2010 Summer Conference page 8-9 The Kenductor Official Publication of the Kentucky Choral Directors Association President s Message Phyllis Vincent I am in Frankfort, safe and sound! I have not been to England, did not send you an email requesting funds to get home. Either I have made a huge error with my email or someone has used it to set up a sad scenario requesting your money. I am so sorry for the confusion and the lack of communication this past couple of weeks. However, I now know that many of you were willing to do whatever to get me home, but wise enough to call my home to double check on the situation. Loving friends and smart ones at that! our Kentucky music family. It has been a good year for us in KY ACDA! We had a wonderful 2009 Summer Conference with Eichenberger and Schoebel. We had an awesome Honor Choir Festival in November with Dwyer, Floyd and Aspaas. The budget worked on both events and Pat was pleased with us. I shared four goals with you last summer, four things that I wanted to see begun or improved by your leadership in 2009-2011. Let s review and give you an update. 1) We want to make something happen in each and every R & S area. Do something for you! 2) We want to improve the transition between service terms. Notebooks, reports, calendars created, suggestions for those who follow. 3) We want website improvement. 4) We want to increase our membership. We did not get all of that done and the buck stops here, with me. We have had some R & S Chairs in a situation where life prevented their best work. We had R & S Chairs who agreed to help you, but their plates were just too full. We will regroup and recommit and continue to serve you toward these four goals. I want us to make a difference for you. If you are willing to take on a position of service in ACDA, please let me hear from you. I need your help. Please talk to your colleagues in school, in church, and in your community about ACDA. This is the only national, international, organization devoted strictly to choral music. The journal articles are very informative. There is an effort to offer something for everybody. The conventions, workshops, conferences at all levels are wonderful for information, education, literature, mentors, inspiration. I can t imagine a career planned in choral music without participating in ACDA. Please consider, save and plan to attend the opportunities for your success. If you listen to the education jargon of the last several years, we frequently hear phrases like dumbing down or teaching to the middle. Pleasing the masses may be a concern of ours, performing music that they know, going to pop to be popular, but should it be the main objective of our programs? I hear this is what they want so often or this attracts the young people. continued on page 8

Naxos of America's web store, ClassicsOnline, has generously offered a 25% discount to ACDA members and their friends on selected titles from their extensive choral catalogue. You can access a list of the eligible recordings from the link above. Enter the promotional code ACDA01 at checkout to receive the discount any time until the end of July. New Communication Tool Unveiled for American Choral Directors Association Article reprinted with permission from ACDA.org On June 29, ChoralNet Communities will be unveiled in Chicago at the Leadership Conference of the American Choral Directors Association. A "Community" will combine the many features of various online communication and networking activities that are currently in use. Want a blog? It is there. A forum? It is also there. A website? It is there, too, complete with multi-level page creation. Want an online library for file sharing? It will be there. Even better, as part of ACDA ChoralNet, any community will be tied into the vast archives of past discussions and links to resources that reside in ChoralNet and ACDA's website, and any of these resources can be accessed and linked at will. This development is the brainchild of Jim Feiszli, who has directed the work of ChoralNet since its inception. Feiszli has been working closely with ACDA Technology Committee Chair Philip Copeland and ACDA Executive Director Tim Sharp in the development and evolution of this new system of communication and professional networking. ChoralNet has recently merged with the American Choral Directors Association, and as of July 1, 2010, ChoralNet, Inc. will cease operations as it becomes ACDA ChoralNet. According to Feiszli, "We believe that what ACDA ChoralNet provides is an answer to the needs of a large and rapidly changing organization like ACDA. Communities, with its Facebook-like features, will allow State Chapters, Division Chapters, Repertoire and Standards areas, and other subsets of the entire choral community to create communications that are in tune with what the next decade will bring." 2011 National Conference Chicago, Illinois March 9, 2011 - March 12, 2011 4

M ale Chorus NEWS Brent Merritt KYACDA Male Choirs R&S Chair Do you have a guy s choir/ensemble? We would love to hear about the success you are having with your male singers. Anything regarding recruitment, musical selections, techniques, etc Finding, training, and retaining good guys has always been a challenge, so please share with us what YOU have been doing that works! Please e-mail me some of your highlights by the end of February and I will compile a best-of list! Could be very helpful! My e-mail: brent.merritt@scott.kyschools.us The Kentucky Male Chorus Festival held on October 24 at NKU was a huge success! Thanks to Mr. John Stegner and Dr. Randy Pennington for joining forces to coordinate this wonderful event. Dr. Richard RD Mathey, Director of Choirs at Bowling Green State University (Emeritus) was a fantastic teacher, director and an inspiration to all. Thanks again for hosting this event in the Northern region of the state. The UK MALE CHORUS DAY was another success! On Saturday, January 23 at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Jefferson Johnson hosted this annual event for male singers, from grade 8-12. The AcoUstiKats and the UK Men s Chorus performed on the free concert at the Singletary Center for the Arts. Music for Women s Choir Marilyn Schraeder KYACDA Women s Choirs R&S Chair I'd like to share a new piece I used at Christmas this year. "Noel Nouvelet", a traditional French Carol, arranged for SSA (30912) by Vicki Tucker Courtney, Alfred Publishing Company. It is written for SATB as well as 3- part mixed. It uses piano accompaniment, and incorporates two flutes, hand drum and triangle. In a written paper on our concert, one of my students wrote "the flute players and the other instrumentalists made the piece come alive. The upbeat tempo intrigued the audience and also encouraged us to be more musical." Everyone enjoyed this selection. One of the favorites of the Musettes is "All is Well", words and music by Michael W. Smith and Wayne Kirkpatrick, arranged by John Leavitt. It is arranged for SSA (08745307) and is also available for SATB. It is a Praise Song publication, and exclusively distributed by Hal Leonard. This piece begins with a solo and has a soprano descant. When the full choir is singing and the descant is being sung, it is beautiful. Let me know what some of your favorite women's chorus songs are, and also if you are interested in having a Women's Choir Festival. As R & S Chair for Women's Choirs, I am interested in knowing your favorite pieces for festivals, Christmas and spring concerts. I also need to know who directs SSA(A) women's choirs. Let me hear from you. My e- mail address is mschraed@msn.com. Plan to Attend! KYACdA Summer Conference July 19-20 Highland Baptist Church - Louisville Registration form at www.kyacda.org/events 6

Scheibe received the D.M.A. from USC and the B.A. and M.M. from California State University at Long Beach. Mary McDonald is a multi-talented musician from Knoxville, Tennessee. Her music and talents have blessed choirs and congregations across the country for more than twenty-five years. Mary is the composer of nearly 700 published choral anthems, several Christmas and Easter cantatas, and numerous keyboard collections, and still serves as an editorial consultant for Lorenz. She is also active as a choral clinician, traveling throughout the United States conducting workshops and concertizing. Her unique blend of heart, hands, and humor, combined with a wide range of writing and performing styles, keep her in constant demand.
