s u o V z e d Ren March 2010 CALLINGTON & DISTRICT TWINNING ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER Twinned with Guipavas, Brittany (F) since 1982 and Barsbüttel, Schleswig-Holstein (D) since 2004 Year on year, Burns Night in Callington just gets better and better, and 2010 was certainly no exception. The quote by Robert Burns in the headline sums it up perfectly. The Town Hall was awash with the colours of kilts and tartans as everyone made an effort to be the part. The evening got off to a slightly less glamorous beginning than usual as we sorely missed Ken Shaw and his bagpipes. Due to illness Ken was unable to make it, and we wish him a speedy recovery. Nevertheless, the haggis was paraded and received many a stab from Isabelle s sgian dubh as she set about trenching the gushing entrails bright. Each year we attempt to change the format, and this year, as Portreeve, Rick Lumley gave an Address to the Town which received a suitable reply from Deputy Portreeve Karen Gold. What did not change was the standard of the cuisine and, once again, Jill Hill provided Scottish fayre of excellent quality and quantity. The evening was rounded off by nigh CHAIRMAN Sue Lumley: 01579 382705 TREASURER Keith Shaw: 01579 370344 on everyone taking to the dance floor to show off their expertise at Scottish reels. This really is an evening to savour and the next one is firmly in our social calendar for the forthcoming year. See you at our next Burns Night event on Saturday 22 January 2011! And tell your friends and bring them along it s the best Burns Night in the area! VICE CHAIRMAN David Graham: 01579 384268 SECRETARY Ken Aspinall: 01579 383703 Website: http://callingtontwinning.weebly.com For further information about twinning, do not hesitate to contact any of the officers or committee members.

Page 2 CADTA AGM The AGM went off well, although numbers attending were less than usual. Certainly the weather did not really entice people away from their firesides and we hope that next year s weather treats us a little more kindly and that we will see a bigger turn-out. It didn't prevent attendees from enjoying the cheese and wine and the volume of chatter was as great as ever. The committee was returned en bloc, with the exception of Chris Harris who resigned from the committee due to work pressure. We thank Chris for all her hard work and support on the committee over the years and hope that she will return one day. PORTREEVE S CHARITY DAY Twinners will be out in force in Callington Town Hall on Saturday 24 April for the annual Portreeve s Charity Day. Come along between 9.00am and 1.00pm and support us. There s a quiz to do and a display of all that has been and will be going on in the world of twinning. VOLUNTEERS WELCOME! Volunteers from the Association are always welcome to offer their services to help staff stalls, etc. And there s always the chance to be co-opted on to the Committee. Speak to Sue or any committee member. The work is not onerous, and we re a fun bunch! Barsbüttel Visit August 2010 It s all systems go for the August visit to Barsbüttel. Response has been good and the German committee has arranged for our visit to coincide with their annual Sommerfest, so there will be lots going on over that weekend. We are delighted that, after their first international tour to Guipavas in 2009, the Callington Town Band are ready to embark on their next international engagement and will be joining us on the visit. They are guaranteed to have a great time. German brass band music is a particular favourite of Bill Leith, the Town Band s musical director, so he is raring to go. They will, we hope, be linking up with the local Fire Brigade Band in Willinghusen, just outside Barsbüttel and part of the parish, and be giving a joint concert. Separate information will be sent out with this newsletter to those who have signed up. The barbecue planned for Saturday 26 June is obviously open to all members, but will allow in particular those travelling in August to meet up and start getting excited together!

Page 3 T welve OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME days in Germany this summer! Join up with 30 other young people from around Europe! Take part in a project based on the Performing Arts! All travel, food, accommodation, insurance, excursions included in the price! Sounds good? Then read on! For the last 11 years Callington and District Twinning Association has taken part in an annual event linking young people from Callington with our twin towns in France and Germany and also a town in Estonia. Each summer up to 10 young people between the ages of 16 and 18 meet together for a themed residential project in one of the four countries. Last year we were fortunate enough to spend 12 days discovering the city of Tallinn and two very different Estonian islands. This year it will be the turn of our German twin town, Barsbüttel, to host the event with a theme of performing arts. Ten young people from each community will have the opportunity to spend 12 days in this German town on the outskirts of Hamburg and work on a joint production culminating in a public performance. Opportunities exist for all those who enjoy drama, dance, music, film-making as well as the production side with costumes, stage-management etc. No previous experience required except an interest in getting to know other young people from different countries of Europe and discovering another European country. The project will run from the 18 th to the 30 th July 2010 and is part funded by European Youth agencies to keep the costs as low as possible for participants. The charge made to applicants is 200 to include all accommodation and food, road and air transport to Germany, all activities and visits while in Germany. These International Youth Projects really are a life-changing experience: they will certainly boost young people s CVs and will give them loads to talk about at interview. But, quite simply, on a personal level they will boost confidence, add to their life experiences and certainly add to their international circle of friends! Places are limited so anyone interested should contact the chairman of the Twinning Association, Sue Lumley for further details as soon as possible on 01579 382705 or by e- mailing richard.lumley@callington-tc.gov.uk. Twinning members, if you know of any suitable candidates amongst your friends and neighbours, put them in touch with us NOW!

Page 4 To err is human. We all forget things from time to time. We all think we ve done something when we haven t. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY APRIL Saturday 24th Portreeve s Charity Day Are you up-to-date with your subscription to the Twinning Association? We keep our membership low just to cover administration costs, but paper, ink and postage still take up a pretty penny. MAY Friday 14th JUNE Saturday 26th Civic Ball open to all Twinning Barbecue Furthermore, a strong membership really does help when it comes to making funding bids to Europe, and without those our annual Youth Projects just would not happen and many young people would miss out. Please check (with us if necessary) to see if you have paid for the current year. The easiest way is to set up a Standing Order. It s best for you and it s best for us. But we still take cash or cheques if that is the way you prefer! Give Keith a ring for some help. KEEP UP TO SPEED! Please check the twinning website (http:// callingtontwinning.weebly.com ) frequently to keep up with the news. There is lots happening at the Callington Arts Venue, so visit the CAVe website (http:// callingtoncave.weebly.com). Both can be accessed directly from the Callington town website (note the new address http://callington-tc.gov.uk) by just clicking on the links on the home page. CALLINGTON CARNIVAL Callington Festival Week is back with a bang from Saturday 10th to Saturday 17th July and it all starts with a combined Gala Day and Callington Carnival on the 10th. Go to the CAVe website (address on this page) with links to the Carnival website for details of how to enter. We shall be entering a float and are looking for people with ideas for a theme and, ideally, a bit of expertise in the way of making a farm trailer look like something it s not! So if you re good on ideas or can wield a hammer and a paint brush, get in touch with us. Last year s twinning entry was brilliant and the members who were on board had a whale of a time, but we are aiming to pick up the First Prize cup this year. Come and help us win! International Film Shows The recent season of World Cinema has been a success, with a small but regular (and growing) band of followers. We have now stopped for the summer, but will be back in September with another wide range of films to suit all tastes. Alternating with the World Cinema is a programme of Classics of the Silver Screen where films are shown that have had a lasting impact on the way films have been made since. Come along and enjoy your favourites again, or catch up on those you missed the first time round. Entrance is FREE! We just ask for a donation when you leave! e- If you would like to help save the planet by receiving electronically, please drop me an e-mail at rflumley@fsmail.net.
