1080p Digital images are made up of many pixels arranged in a grid. Traditional HD displays use signals with 1080p resolution, where the visible image is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall. That's just over 2 million pixels total or 2 megapixels. The resolution of a video signal is considered to be at least 3840 x 2160 pixels. This format is four times the resolution of a 1080p image and is commonly referred to as Ultra High Definition or "UHD." The cinema resolution known as "" has a slightly wider aspect ratio and a resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels. resolutions offer well above 8 million total pixels. What is? Why does it matter? Image Quality With greater than 4x times the number of pixels, resolution displays offer a major breakthrough in performance that will help usher in a new era of digital display applications. Thanks to their higher resolution, displays offer greater depth, realism and impact. At the same time they provide a larger field of view, which delivers a more immersive user experience. Simplicity With digital content creation, multi-tasking, and collaboration increasing, for many users it's commonplace to have two or more monitors at a single workstation. Users want to simplify. With four times the resolution of 1080p, displays can provide a less cluttered workspace, avoiding the awkward search for the cursor amidst an array of displays. Since there's more resolution to work with, larger screens can be used without losing image quality and multiple application windows can be viewed on a single screen. High-End Applications For many demanding display applications, such as command and control centers, CAD environments, 3D simulation, large-scale video walls, and others, every pixel counts. More pixels mean better decision-making, increased productivity, as well as more immersive digital environments and impactful entertainment venues. There's real value added beyond merely displaying a better image. 3 DVIGear - Field-Proven Distribution
Digital Bit Rate Digital video is composed of a grid of pixels called a frame. These frames are refreshed on a display many times per second to create the illusion of movement. The typical refresh rate of a signal is sixty times per second or 60 Hz. Within each individual frame, each displayed pixel is represented by a number of digital bits of information. In digital video signals such as DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort, these digital bits are transported from source to destination at extremely high data rates. This is required in order to perfectly transport every pixel, in every frame, many times per second. For example, the digital bit rate of a 1080p / 60Hz / 8-bit signal is 1.48 Gbps per color (R, G, B). That's 1,480,000,000 bits per second per color. The capacity of a given transport system to carry these signals is generally known as bandwidth. The challenge is, an uncompressed signal at 30 Hz with 8-bit color, requires twice the bandwidth of an uncompressed 1080p signal. A signal at 60 Hz with 8-bit color requires four times the bandwidth of an uncompressed 1080p signal. What are the challenges? Infrastructure displays are rapidly coming to market at lower and lower prices. PC's and other sources supporting resolutions are now readily available. However, for professional and commercial applications, the video infrastructures (i.e. the equipment and pathways connecting sources and displays) currently in place simply cannot handle the enormous data rates required by uncompressed. This issue represents a huge problem that must be addressed by AV designers if they want their systems to be future ready. 5 10 15 20 25 Bit Rates in Gbps.
