M A I N A T T R A C T I O N S Main Attractions: We try to play each of these films as featured main attractions. Additional current films also pop onto our radar. So, when will these films play? We determine on Monday (or Tuesday) what new films will start on Friday. We then lock in the upcoming week s schedule and immediately let you know on our website and on our hotline. We ll also update you directly by email each week, if you sign up at our website. Please Give USA 1 hr 31 min - Nicole Holofcener A New York film through and through, PLEASE GIVE starts when a family purchases an apartment from an elderly woman. With a multi-layered story and a large ensemble cast, director Holofcener (Friends With Money) extracts a muted, Rohmer-like morality tale that falls mostly on the comedy side of the spectrum. Catherine Keener, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, and Rebecca Hall all give wonderful performances. Micmacs France 1 hr 44 min - Jean-Pierre Jeunet with subtitles The director of the beloved Amelie brings his trademark whimsical style back to the screen with this wacky tale of a video store clerk who tries to bring down Parisian arms dealers. Of course! Jeunet s hyperactive imagination is applied to a 40 s-style caper film and it almost feels like a silent film, given the sparse dialogue. The actors, featuring Dany Boon, are unforgettable and the film is a pure delight. The Art of the Steal USA 1 hr 40 min Don Argott A gripping tale of intrigue, THE ART OF THE STEAL traces the history of the internationally famous Barnes art collection. The Barnes Renoirs, Cézannes, and Matisses are scheduled to move to a new home in downtown Philadelphia in 2011. Taking a decided point of view, THE ART OF THE STEAL argues that this move constitutes an artistic crime of the highest order. (Check our Cinematheque section for specific screenings with speakers.) Creation Great Britain 1 hr 48 min - Jon Amiel This handsome historical film is about Charles Darwin and his struggle to publish the explosive On The Origin of Species. But in addition to the science vs. religion debate, the film is about Darwin s grief over the loss of a child. Thought provoking and intelligent, the film stars Paul Bettany, Jennifer Connelly, Jeremy Northam and Toby Jones. The White Ribbon Germany 2 hr 24 min Michael Haneke b/w with subtitles In a small German village prior to WWI, a number of unexplained accidents beset the town s schoolchildren and their parents. Stark and direct and shot in stunningly beautiful black and white, THE WHITE RIBBON is a slow, mysterious film about control and oppression. A quintessential art film, it has striking imagery and no easy answers.

M A I N A T T R A C T I O N S The Girl on the Train France 1 hr 41 min Andre Techine with subtitles The latest from master director Techine is based on one of the most media-covered and polarizing events of recent French history: a young woman s claim that she was the victim of an anti-semitic attack by black and Arab youth. But she wasn t attacked and she s not Jewish. From this, Techine fashions a complex, multi-layered film, built upon brilliant performances from Emilie Dequenne (Rosetta) and Catherine Deneuve. Greenberg USA Noah Baumbach GREENBERG is the latest dark comedy from Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale). Ben Stiller plays a single, fortyish guy at a crossroads. While house-sitting for his successful brother in LA, he tries to reconnect with old friends and restart his life. In awkward and amusing fashion, things don t work out according to plan. With Greta Gerwig and Rhys Ifans. Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky France 1 hr 58 min - Jan Kounen with subtitles This French drama delivers an impressive combination of sights and sounds in depicting the brief, tumultuous affair between these two famous artists. Following on the heels of Coco Before Chanel, this is like the next chapter of a very handsome book. Beautifully shot with robust visuals that are often set to Stravinsky s music, this film is a pleasure to behold. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Sweden 2 hr 28 min Niels Arden Oplev with subtitles Based on the international bestseller of Stieg Larsson, GIRL is about a tomboyish punk hacker who teams up with a disgraced middle-aged journalist to investigate a decades-old crime. It s a dark noir thriller that intensifies as layers of mystery are peeled away. Swedish film is alive and well in this stylish offering. Babies France Thomas Balmes with subtitles A visually stunning and joyful documentary that chronicles the lives of four newborns, from first breath to first steps, in four very different locations: Mongolia, Namibia, San Francisco, and Tokyo. It s a journey that is at once universal and yet amazingly original. Limited Engagements: We try to play each of these films for full multi-week runs. Sometimes, however, because of scheduling conflicts, we are unable to play one of these films (or another great movie) in a timely or complete manner. As a result, we ve added a new series called Limited Engagements for which we ll book smaller or overlooked films for 2 or 3 mid-week screenings, only. Make sure that you signup for our weekly email blast, so that you don t miss them. And check our website often for the latest info. A M B L E R T H E A T E R. O R G 2 1 5 3 4 5 7 8 5 5

These digital transfers look great on the big screen. We have programmed 6 more this spring. Check out these classics for yourself we think you ll be very happy with the results even if you re a 35mm purist. Jacques Tati in HD And 3 of these Janus films are from the inimitable Jacques Tati. Still fresh and relevant, his beloved character Monsieur Hulot confronts the puzzle and wonder of modern life. Trafic 1971 France 1hr 37min color HD Digital w/subtitles dir: Jacques Tati This nearly silent comedy brings the hapless Monsieur Hulot back to the screen, as a Parisian auto designer who has a tricky time delivering a prototype camper packed with crazy gadgets to a show in Amsterdam. The obstacles Hulot faces during his journey spiral into absurdity and surrealism. Eugene Onegin Tchaikovsky (2008) Opera de Paris - 3hr Tchaikovsky s classic tale of a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman s love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend. The Opera de Paris opens its season with a world-class guest: the Bolshoi from Moscow. Please visit our website (or a later page in this brochure) for information about our Sunday opera series. County: Mar 15 (Mon 7:30) Ambler: Mar 17 (Wed 7:30) ART(ON)FILM Producer Patrick Stack Cat City 2009 USA 1hr 29min color digital dir: Brent Huff We welcome Doylestown native son Pat Stack back to the County Theater. His latest is a film noir crime thriller, set amid the trappings of wealth and the high life in Palm Springs. It makes excellent use of its local backdrop to spin a tale of infidelity, deceit, greed and murder in the world of high-rolling developers and low-life financiers. Starring Brian Dennehy, Julian Sands, and Rebecca Pidgeon. Join us afterwards for a Q&A with producer Stack. This event is free for members. Director Natalie Paige Bentley City of Motherly Love 2009 USA 1hr 27min color digital dir: Natalie Paige Bentley Young, overworked, and underpaid, Ashley Freeman faces the hardships of being a single parent to her son, Davie. In a tragic turn of events, she is left with nothing more than what she had previously desired most time and a race to rescue her own life. Followed by a Q&A with director Natalie Paige Bentley. This event is free for members. How is Art captured and portrayed by the movie camera? What is compelling about the lives of artists that films can open to us? Join us for an adventure into the world of art on film, which features narrative films that bring iconic artists to life as well as documentaries about artists and art collectors.

CINEMATHEQUE SPRING ART(ON)FILM County: Mar 22 (Mon 7:30) Ambler: Mar 24 (Wed 7:30) JACQUES TATI IN HD County: Mar 9 (Tues 5:30) Mar 10 (Wed 7:30) Ambler: Mar 24 (Wed 5:30) Mar 25 (Thurs 7:30) SERIES 10 ART(ON)FILM Ambler: Mar 31 (Wed 7:30) County: Apr 1 (Thurs 7:30) Girl with a Pearl Earring 2003 Great Britain 1hr 40min color 35mm dir: Peter Webber In this cinematic adaptation of Tracy Chevalier s best-selling novel, a young housemaid becomes the muse of Dutch master painter Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer was famous for capturing the luminosity and grace of women in domestic settings. But his proud wife would be furious if she knew that the pretty servant was his latest subject. With Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth. Mr. Hulot s Holiday 1953 France 1hr 28min b/w HD Digital w/subtitles dir: Jacques Tati Jacques Tati came to international recognition with this gently satirical comedy, which introduced his alter ego, Monsieur Hulot. When Hulot spends a holiday at a seaside resort, he accidentally wreaks havoc wherever he goes. He crashes a funeral, topples a priceless vase and ignites fireworks with his pipe all with good nature and surreal grace. (In French, but with very little dialogue.) The Mystique of Art A Film Forum with Erika Jeager- Smith and Mavis Smith Local artist Mavis Smith joins Michener Museum curator Erika Jeager-Smith for this special discussion about art and artists. With examples drawn from clips of the films in the Art (on) Film series, this discussion will examine the mystery of art and artists and what filmmakers have found so fascinating. Join us for an insightful and illuminating evening. ART(ON)FILM County: Apr 5 (Mon 7:30) Ambler: Apr 7 (Wed 7:30) Ambler: Apr 8 (Thurs 7:30) Ambler: Apr 14 (Wed 7:30) The Art of the Steal 2009 USA 1hr 40min color HD Digital dir: Don Argott (In addition to our presentation of this film as a Main Attraction, we include it here for these two special screenings for which we ll have speakers and guests. Check our website and hotline for details.) This spirited film charts the history of the Barnes art collection, worth billions and located in Montgomery County. Dr Barnes will has been broken in court and the foundation s collection of Renoirs, Cezannes and Matisses are scheduled to move to a new home in downtown Philadelphia in 2011 but not if this feisty (and partisan?) film can prevent it. Sneak Peak: Earth Days 2010 USA 1hr 30min color digital dir: Robert Stone WHYY co-hosts this sneak preview of Robert Stone s documentary about the birth of the modern environmental movement. Visually stunning, vastly entertaining, and aweinspiring, EARTH DAYS traces the birth of green from its post-war rumblings in the 1950s to the first Earth Day celebration in 1970. Join us after the screening for a special Q&A with a panel of regional environmental leaders. This event is free for members. Director Deanne Comer Voices of Holocaust History 2008 USA 1hr digital dir: Deane Comer In the 1980s, Abington School District became one of the first programs to mandate an educational program about the Holocaust. This stirring documentary by local filmmaker Deanne Comer, chronicles the development of this program and the extraordinary work they have been able to do with three local survivors. Followed by a special Q&A with administrators from the Abington School District, director Deanne Comer, and two holocaust survivors from the film. This event is free for members.

CINEMATHEQUE SPRING SERIES 10 JACQUES TATI IN HD County: Apr 6 (Tues 5:30) Apr 7 (Wed 7:30) Ambler: Apr 14 (Wed 5:30) Apr 15 (Thurs 7:30) ART(ON)FILM County: Apr 19 (Mon 7:30) Ambler: Apr 21 (Wed 7:30) County: Apr 26 (Mon 7:30) Mon Oncle 1958 France 1hr 56min color HD Digital w/subtitles dir: Jacques Tati Monsieur Hulot returns in this satirical masterpiece that makes sport of mechanization, class distinctions and modernity. While visiting his sister s surreal, ultra-trendy home, Hulot finds himself at odds with newfangled contraptions that get the better of him. This tongue-incheek French comedy is endlessly entertaining. (In French, but with little dialogue.) Frida 2002 USA 2hrs 3min color 35mm dir: Julie Taymor Julie Taymor directs this award-winning portrait of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, focusing on her often rocky relationship with husband Diego Rivera and her controversial political and sexual life. Kahlo struggled with pain and addiction following a debilitating accident and, later, the amputation of her right leg. But her vivid paintings speak of a life fully lived. Featuring Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina. Producer Eric Grob and live piano accompaniment The General 1926/2010 USA 1hr 18min b/w HD Digital Buster Keaton s classic film THE GENERAL is given new life with a unique Scott Joplin score in this live performance. Join producer Eric Grob and pianist Charles de Mets for a compelling vision of this classic silent film, which Grob calls Many Masterpieces Become One. Followed by a Q&A. This event is free for members. Ambler: Apr 28 (Wed 7:30) County: May 3 (Mon 7:30) ART(ON)FILM Ambler: Apr 29 (Thurs 7:30) County: May 5 (Wed 7:30) Reciprocal Benefits at the County Theater. Mystery Shorts from the Lou D Vault A potpourri of short films from Lou DiCrescenzo s amazing collection of film treasures. Chock full of trailers, cartoons, short documentaries, newsreels, and selections from obscure feature films. Join us as we explore this strange and varied collection. The program will be different at each theater and will last approx 2 hours. Herb and Dorothy 2008 USA 1hr 29min color HD Digital dir: Megumi Sasaki HERB AND DOROTHY documents the art and lives of two world-class art collectors, who happen to be a postal clerk and a librarian. The Vogels share a passion for art, which they have pursued over decades, becoming two of the most important collectors of minimalist and conceptual art with more than 4,000 pieces. This lively documentary chronicles their unlikely status and shows that it s not necessary to be wealthy in order to build a significant collection.
