Next Steps

Implementation Step 0: Assign Movie Review Producer as point of contact - This person will be in charge of communicating with the community of WNYC movie reviewers Step 1: Contact 130 reviewers as WNYC for next reviews - Promise link back from web Step 2: Create initial Mother of All Movie Reviews - Do exit interviews if not enough material Step 3: Start WNYC Movie Review Community - Invite the 130 reviewers (promise last e-mail) Step 4: Call out to radio audience to join the Community - Keep the easy call-ins and web interactions

Criticism in peril: Existing criticism does not align with audience behavior

The Challenges If we are a culture of amateur critics, how can radio tap into this trend and still keep listeners? How to provide context in such a way that provides value for anonymous 15 second movie reviews? How to replicate scanning behavior in a listenable radio piece?

How is value established? The rise of the semi-pros Rotten Tomatoes

Thanks for sending this over...unfortunately that java app provides for neither depth nor richness. I'd be glad to participate if I could provide my own MP3 recorded using my podcast setup here--otherwise the sound quality won't be on a par with anything I'd want to send to anybody.

I ve already seen the movie so it s hard to say if I found it useful! -The sound quality was a little patchy and uneven -The movie dialogue in the background was distracting (were you dubbing over the trailer?) -The tone of the dialogue sounded unanimously positive, so it came across to me as more of an advertisement than a review. Was there any negative feedback available? Hope that helps! Hi. Loved the reviews. They were great. The announcer was kind of hesitant though. The announcer came across as amateurish- halting, not a lot of presence. It didn't feel like a balanced review, more like a PR piece for the film company. There wasn't any criticism in the film criticism!! Interesting idea, but the proto is lacking. The pace is a bit too high, it's a bit overwhelming, kinda like watching a commercial break. Doesnt leave a feeling of depth, but rather one of superficial evaluation. Also, samples were not critical enough of the movie itself. Downey is cute? Really? Well, you just wasted another 5 seconds of my time :) The snippets were helpful- I actually remember most of them despite only hearing it once great way to start off the summer most people movie goers would enjoy this it s a great group movie The only thing I m missing is a calibration.how great a group movie? 3 out of 5 stars? 4? enh...interesting idea, but a bit difficult to digest. Definitely need to spend time improving content and delivery. I think I'd prefer more detailed reviews interspersed with sound effects/ clips from the movie. Awesome special effects! (wooosh) Gweneth Paltrow was a bit lame (whiny voice) Bob Dow Jr. was incredible (snide dialogue) stay thru the credits (Sam Jackson's voice) And I guess the range of opinions would make it more than just an ad. i like it. they sound bite montage has been effective for lots of radio promo material... why not for public radio? in contrast to the above comment i'd pick up the pace and make it faster. it maybe overwhelming at first but we're used to it. Great idea! General feedback: * Great trailer clip choice. Funny like the movie and short. * In the beginning, the sound quality made it hard to hear what the announcer was saying, but I got the gist that we had just listened to a trailer. * The announcer sounds cheesy like a car salesman or novice radio host (think 89.5fm in Seattle - a radio show run by high school students). * Sounded like a good set of audience opinions. Even though it was a little advertisey with so many positive opinions, it was good that the opinions included stuff such as great if you like comics/batman, great for groups - b/c if you don't like comics, Batman, or going to movies in groups, you'll know this movie isn't for you. * Background sound was a little distracting since it sounded like voices (was it the movie?). Would have been nicer to have upbeat background music or some other sound that tried to capture the essence. * Good length - short enough to keep my attention while giving me the beta info I'm looking for (should I bother seeing it?). Good luck & have fun! I like the format, reminds me of voices in the news on npr, or of an audio and editorial version of rotten tomatoes.

Really?
