QUALITY CONNECTION SOLUTIONS
Our vision To be market leader in the design and provision of quality custom connection solutions and a centre of excellence in electrical & fibre optic terminations. About LEMO The LEMO Group was founded in 1946 by Leon Mouttet with the commencement of the manufacture of precision of gold plated contacts. In 1957 he invented the push-pull connector system which has since been developed into the most reliable of the push-pull connection systems. The LEMO Group has significantly expanded its production facilities and local service outlets to create a global presence, with over 1,000 employees worldwide. LEMO UK is responsible for the servicing of the LEMO Group s customers in the UK and Irish markets. Founded in 1973 the Company has grown steadily to become a market leader for circular connection solutions. This leaflet gives an insight into how LEMO UK can assist you in achieving a quality connection solution. Our services include technical support, design facilities, customer sales services, extensive stocks, flexible local connector assembly and cable termination service to provide a complete solution. The UK company also incorporates the Group centre for Fibre Optics R&D. LEMO UK aims to achieve industry excellence in the design, manufacture and sale of products and services to optimise responsiveness, lead-times, quality and price. We strive to develop long-term relationships with customers and suppliers, and our record to date is a testament to that policy. LEMO is at the forefront of developments in our key market segments, an example being the globally approved fibre optic camera connection system for HDTV systems. We continue to invest in resources in fibre optic systems and assembly, and have unique skills, especially in termination of hybrid electro-optic connectors. Continuous development of our ISO9001 accredited systems enables us to further improve quality and maximise productivity. LEMO s unique Push-Pull Self-Latching connection system The LEMO self-latching system allows the connector to be mated by simply pushing the plug axially into socket. Once firmly latched, connection cannot be broken by pulling on the cable or any other component part other than the outer release sleeve. When required, the connector is disengaged by a single axial pull on the outer release sleeve. This first disengages the latches and then withdraws the plug from the socket. ii
About our products Design the connector to suit your application The modular design of the LEMO range currently provides over 75,000 combinations of connectors with many more potential options, thus enabling customers to select the ideal precision interconnection to suit their application. Technical support Advice on connector selection and specification Which connectors do I need from the extensive LEMO range? Our team of Field Sales Engineers are based around the UK and are responsible for providing product and technical information to enable you to select the connection solution best suited to your application. A meeting with one of our fully trained Engineers, who carry a comprehensive range of samples and technical information, is probably one of the best means of determining your requirements. Once suitable connector/cable requirements have been identified, samples can be supplied, in most instances, for use in customer prototypes so that you can finally check the suitability and confirm your selection of a reliable connection. These samples are supplied through our standard system and are therefore fully lot traceable, should there be a need for the purposes of your qualification. In addition you can be sure that when you place your first order these will be exactly as tested. Design and develop new solutions to suit your requirements One of the significant benefits of LEMO connectors is the modular construction in combination with the full extent of the range itself. This means that there is nearly always a solution for a customer s project from the wide choice available. Where an immediate solution cannot be found, the accommodation of the customer s requirements is often only a matter of designing or modifying a single component. For example the new LEMO fibre optic contact is now a key component in the use of fibre optics within the broadcast market. When LEMO started to develop connectors for ruggedised fibre optic applications it was decided that the new contact should make use of existing coaxial contact cavities within hybrid and multicoax insulators thus significantly limiting the extent of tooling required to adapt and expand the fibre optic range. If you have need of a specialised connection solution then your requirements are formally incorporated into the LEMO projects management system. The development request will either be handled by the UK design team, or will be incorporated within LEMO Group projects if it is an evolution of the existing range. All special connector and cable assembly order items are fully prepared on our CAD system and the resulting drawing is agreed with the customer prior to any work starting, so that we can ensure that you are getting precisely what you require. iv
Customer services Our dedicated team of customer support personnel have considerable resources to hand to enable them to provide information on pricing and availability of product. Once an order is received it is thoroughly analysed during the contract review process. This ensures that the details are correct before your order is processed onto our central processing system. Where a customer has regular requirements for our connectors we can enter into schedule or call-off supply agreements in order to manage your future supplies and optimise pricing. Our direct link into the manufacturing centre s systems means that we are able to constantly monitor the status of any order, whether for our stock or for specific customers. Card service now operating Visa, Mastercard, Switch & Purchasing cards accepted Stocks of components and connectors A very wide range of standard components is held in stock to support short lead-time requests for standard items. In addition call-off or schedule orders are operated which ensure that stock is either in place or in manufacture for continued supply, particularly with items unique to any one customer. Altogether over 5,000 part references are held in stock in LEMO UK. We are constantly evolving our stock holding to support demand and ensure the best service to our customers. Connectors are assembled to order which considerably increases our flexibility of supply at relatively short notice, taking full advantage of the variety and scope of the LEMO connector modular construction. Additional sources of supply include: RS Components and Farnell for a range of standard items Bryant Broadcast for triax camera connectors and HDTV hybrid Fibre Optic and termination service. Assured systems LEMO UK operate a Management System fully accredited to the ISO9001 standard, including our design facility. All processes are monitored and the results of measurements are utilised to identify improvement opportunities. As one might expect for the premier connector manufacturer our returns rate is close to zero. Fully controlled and integrated processes throughout the whole system enable us to ensure complete traceability right back to the raw material consumed in the LEMO manufacturing centres. v
Cable assembly Connector termination service electrical and fibre optic LEMO UK has its own connector termination facilities with fully trained technicians and we pride ourselves on the quality of the terminations provided. The best connectors and cables are of little use if not terminated correctly. Even an apparently successful electrical termination can fail in the field through dry solder joints, poor crimping or insufficient fixing of cable jacketing, screening or insulation. Fibre optic terminations require proper selection and fixing of ferrules on the fibre, followed by the correct polishing process, whether hand or machine-polishing, in order to ensure optimum performance with minimum optical losses. Each electrical connector termination is fully tested for pin-pin continuity, as well as having a high voltage test to ensure that there are no potential breakdown problems. Every cable assembly is fully inspected to ensure that it meets the requirements specified. All fibre optic terminations are subjected to insertion loss and back-reflection tests as required to ensure the highest quality of signal transmission, with test results recorded for each cable. Whilst our emphasis is naturally on the termination of our own connectors, we have extensive experience of termination of connectors from other manufacturers. Full repair service for ruggedised fibre optic cable assemblies is provided, especially for the HDTV market. As well as skilled wirepersons, the achievement of quality terminations requires the necessary equipment, both for production and test functions as well as meeting requirements for health and safety. LEMO UK s cable facility is equipped with the latest cable preparation, termination and test equipment, both manual and automatic. vi
