QPHY-eDP Instructin Manual QPHY-eDP Testing Embedded DisplayPrt cmpliance testing invlves generating signals with varius bitrates, patterns, levels, pre-emphasis settings, and SSC settings all n up t fur lanes. The QualiPHY-eDP test script lps ver the different values f each f these prperties and perfrms tests n cmbinatins f signal prperties that are enabled fr testing. While sme f the prperties may be defined by the user, this lping structure is nt cntrlled by the user. A cnsequence f using this particular architecture is that the rder in which tests are executed will depend n which tests are selected within the cnfiguratin, and which swing/pre-emphasis levels are chsen. The QualilPHY script enfrces the edp rules fr which pre-emphasis levels are supprted vs. swing levels (fr example; Table 4-3 in the edp 1.4 specificatin): Hwever, because f the flexibility permitted by the specificatin in cnfiguring swing and preemphasis, it is pssible t set unused levels fr swing and pre-emphasis (e.g., swing = 3 and preemphasis = 3). Unused cmbinatins are nt tested. Test Preparatin Befre beginning any test r data acquisitin, warm the scillscpe fr at least 20 minutes. Calibratin is perfrmed autmatically by the scillscpe sftware; n manual calibratin is required. The calibratin prcedure will be run again if the temperature f the scillscpe changes by mre than a few degrees. Required DUT Test Mdes All tests require that the DisplayPrt test fixture be cnnected t the DUT. The test fixture utputs will cnnect either directly t the scillscpe, r ptinally t the switch matrix. Refer t the QualiPHY cnnectin diagrams fr physical set up infrmatin. QPHY-eDP supprts bth fully autmated and semi-autmated testing. In either case, the DUT must be placed in the required test mde. It is recmmended that yu ensure the DUT is capable f utputting the required test mdes befre beginning testing. Hst Prgram Cntrl Hst Prgram Cntrl (HPC) is a mde f peratin where QualiPHY is cntrlled by a separate applicatin (the Hst Prgram ). In this mde f peratin, QualiPHY uses a simple handshaking prtcl t send messages t the hst prgram. This is implemented using a synchrnizatin file. See Appendix 1: Using Hst Prgram Cntrl. Nte: When in HPC mde, QualiPHY will halt executin while waiting fr the sync file t be deleted. 926426 Rev B 15

Fur-lane Testing QPHY-eDP perfrms autmated testing f all fur lanes by using the Mini-Circuits USB-4SPDT-A18 switch matrix. T cnfigure fur-lane testing, set the Number f Lanes variable t 4. This variable setting signals QualiPHY t use the switch matrix. If yu d nt have a switch, ne r tw lanes may be tested simultaneusly. Deskewing Input Channels, Cables and/r Switches In rder t achieve the highest accuracy pssible, a deskewing step is required. Deskewing (r simply deskew ) crrects fr any difference in the path lengths cnnecting each signal input t the scillscpe. When prperly deskewed, differences in these path lengths are crrected, aviding ptential measurement errrs. Imprperly deskewed inputs can result in higher than expected intra-pair and inter-pair skew measurements, incrrect differential rise and fall times, higher than expected AC Cmmn Mde nise measurements, excess eye diagram clser, excess jitter, etc. Higher bandwidth Teledyne LeCry scillscpes (such as WaveMaster 8 Zi series) include the unique FastEdge utput signal and trigger type t facilitate deskewing. The test script uses this utput as a signal surce in cnjunctin with the FastEdge trigger t measure the arrival time f the FastEdge thrugh each channel. Deskew values are stred in a file, and are recalled back int each channel s Deskew setting, which is lcated in the Pre-prcessing sectin f each channel s cnfiguratin dialg. There are three basic kinds f deskew that are perfrmed: 16 1. Deskew nly the scillscpe s inputs 2. Deskew input cabling and scillscpe inputs 3. Deskew input switches, cabling and scillscpe inputs Oscillscpe Inputs Only When wishing t crrect fr timing differences nly between the scillscpe input cnnectrs and the internal digitizing hardware, a deskew is perfrmed where the reference plane is the pint where the input signal is plugged int the scillscpe. This type f deskew is used in the case where the test fixture is being cnnected directly t the scillscpe inputs. T perfrm this deskew, discnnect all signals, and use a single cable cnnected t the FastEdge utput. When the sftware prmpts yu t plug a cable int an input channel, simply change the cnnectin frm ne channel t the next using the same cable. The script will stre a file cntaining time ffsets between the FastEdge signal and the trigger time. Skew with respect t channel 1 will be used during testing, such that the deskew setting fr C1 = 0. The deskew settings fr ther channels are with respect t the value measured fr C1. Deskew values that are small (picsecnds) will result. Input Cabling and Oscillscpe Inputs When timing differences between the cables used t cnnect the DUT t the scillscpe are nt f interest and are t be remved (which is usually the case), then a slightly different deskew prcedure is used. This type f deskew is used in the case where the test fixture is cnnected t the scillscpe via cables. Leave the cables cnnected t the scillscpe, and discnnect them frm the DUT. When the sftware prmpts yu t, plug a cable int an input channel (e.g., C2), leave the cable plugged int C2, and cnnect the ther end f the cable int the FastEdge cnnect. (Dn t frget t trque prperly!) The result is a deskew f the input path thrugh the cables specific t each channel, thrugh the LP-SMA adapter, and the scillscpe s internal circuitry. The script will stre t file the time ffsets between the FastEdge signal and the trigger.

QPHY-eDP Instructin Manual Skew with respect t channel 1 will be used during testing, such that the deskew setting fr C1 = 0. The deskew settings fr ther channels are with respect t the value measured fr C1. Deskew values depend n cable lengths used, but if the cables are f the same nminal length (but are nt specifically matched cables ), then channel deskew values can be as high as several tens f picsecnds. Tip: Label the cables and input adapters with the number f the channel t which they are cnnected. Mini-circuits, Input Switches, Input Cabling and Oscillscpe Inputs When using a switch matrix t rute inputs frm the test fixture t the scillscpe, there are tw chices. One is t perfrm a deskew as described belw, the ther is t de-embed the switch matrix and attached cables via S-parameter de-embedding feature f the QualiPHY-eDP script. D nt d bth, since this will essentially Duble crrect fr any skew. Nte: The S-parameter de-embeding perfrmed by the VirtualPrbe feature f the scillscpe will crrect fr bth lss and skew, since S-parameters include bth magnitude and phase infrmatin. Nte: The QPHY-eDP script des nt utilize any special deskew prcedure fr perfrming a deskew thrugh the switch. Emply matched cables t cnnect the text fixture t the switch (r t directly cnnect them), and use ne f the methds described abve. The Mini-Circuits switches are suitably matched. Imprtant: Use a trque wrench at each step in the deskew prcess. If a trque wrench is nt used, the accuracy can easily be ff by several picsecnds. De-embedding QualiPHY-eDP includes the capability t de-embed the TPA-P as well as any switch matrix and/r cables that sit between the lane under test and the scillscpe. De-embedding is accmplished by using the VirtualPrbe sftware capability t emulate the effects f the TPA/switches S-parameters. T de-embed, yu must prvide the Tuchstne files cntaining the cmplete S-parameters. Nte: De-embedding the TPA r switch is nt a requirement f the edp CTG, nr is it explicitly recmmended. Hwever, yu may wish t de-embed if the DUT s perfrmance is n the pass/fail bundary. TPA Fr the TPA (test fixture), this is a 4-prt S-parameter file (.s4p), which wuld be s-parameters that represent any f the main link differential pairs. This file is specific t the TPA in use and shuld be requested frm yur TPA vendr if required. Switch/Cable Fr switches/cables, ne tw-prt file (.s2p) is needed fr each signal path that cnnects a single TPA utput (such as Lane0(-), t a scillscpe channel. The S2P file can be f any part f the path between the TPA utput and the scillscpe channel that yu wish t de-embed. Fr a cmpete deembedding, make yur S-parameter measurements frm the cable cnnecting t the TPA utputs (if used) t the end f the cable that is attached t the scillscpe channel. The S2P file cnnecting Lane N f plarity M t channel X must be named using the syntax: switchlane{n}{m}-c{x} 926426 Rev B 17

Set up the de-embedding in Virtual Prbe and examine the de-embedding manually. This separate step will allw yu t cnfirm that S-parameters fr the TPA r switch are being prperly read-in and yield reasnable results. After cnfirming the de-embedding in VirtualPrbe, cnfigure QualiPHY t perfrm the de-embedding. 18

QPHY-eDP Variables Bitrate Setup Grup A cmplete edp 1.4 test entails testing at seven different transfer rates, each with a specific CTLE definitin. Yu may wish t test nly a subset f these bitrates. This grup includes variables t facilitate chsing the specific rates t test. Bitrate n (Gb/s) Speed in Gb/s f the respective Bitrate, 1 thugh 7. Bitrate n CTLE CTLE defined fr the respective Bitrate (see table 4.19 f the edp specificatin). Cefficients shuld be entered as a cmma-delimited list f values in the frmat: Zer (MHz), Ple1 (GHz), Ple2 (GHz). Fr example: 460, 0.81, 1.46. Enable Bitrate n Tests Fr each Bitrate defined, chse t enable (Yes) r disable (N) testing. Highest Supprted Bitrate Select the highest-supprted bitrate fr yur DUT. Intra-pair skew will be tested at this bitrate, prvided that the bitrate is enabled. Lane Setup Grup Perfrming tests n ne lane at a time is ften desirable, especially given the length f time required fr a cmplete test n all fur lanes. These variables define the cnfiguratin fr 1- and 2-lane tests. Primary Lane Under Test Lane tested when testing nly ne lane. If testing n tw lanes, the variable Secnd Lane Under Test defines the secnd lane. This variable isn t used when testing fur lanes, since the script will by default test n all lanes. Number f Lanes Select t test n 1, 2 r 4 lanes. When chsing 1 r 2, cnfigure the Primary Lane Under Test and Secnd Lane Under Test variables. Primary Lane Channels Since the lanes are differential, each lane under test requires tw scillscpe channels. This variable specifies the tw channels t use fr the primary lane under test. Use the default value f C1 and C2 under nrmal circumstances. Secnd Lane Under Test When Number f Lanes = 2, this variable cntains the lane number f the secnd lane t test. Secndary Lane Channels Since the lanes are differential, each lane under test requires tw scillscpe channels. This variable cntains the tw channels t use fr the secnd lane under test. Use the default value f C3 and C4 under nrmal circumstances. 22

Hst Prgram Cntrl Grup Variables used when running tests in Hst Prgram Cntrl (HPC) mde. See Appendix A: Using Hst Prgram Cntrl Mde fr implementing HPC and the Sync file. Hst Prgram Cntrl Sync Filename Full path t the HPC Sync file (e.g., C:\eDP_sync_file.xml). Use Hst Prgram Cntrl? Enables/disables use f Hst Prgram Cntrl, a simple file-based prtcl that allws a hst cmputer t interact with QualiPHY during a sessin, instead f a human user. When enabled, QualiPHY will write.xml files cntaining requests fr the Hst Prgram using the Hst Prgram Cntrl Sync Filename. Default is N (disabled). Nte: The Hst Prgram shuld cause the Sync file t be deleted when the peratin is cmplete. When this variable is set t Yes, QualiPHY will halt executin until it sees that the Sync file is deleted. De-embedding Setup Grup This grup includes variables t describe the de-embedding cnfiguratin. De-embedding is ptinal, it is nt specified by the edp cmpliance test specificatin. Requires VirtualPrbe. De-embed TPA? Set t Yes t de-embed the TPA-P. Filename/Path fr TPA-P Tuchstne File The cmplete path t the 4-prt S-parameter file used t de-embed the TPA. TPA-P Tuchstne File Prt Mapping Cnfigure this as described in the QualiPHY dialg when setting the variable. The variable is prvided since the mapping f the input t utput prts is arbitrary (e.g., sme users may generate the tuchstne file with prts 1&3 as the input prts, whereas thers may use 1&2 as the inputs). Determine the crrect assignments in rder t perfrm the de-embedding crrectly. De-embed switches? Set t Yes t de-embed the switch and/r cables that rute signals frm the TPA utput t scillscpe input channels. Flder fr Switch De-embedding S2P Files The cmplete path t the flder cntaining the S2P files fr the switch matrix. 24

Other Setup Grup The variables in this grup are the remaining variables that apply t all tests. QPHY-eDP Instructin Manual CTLE fr edp 1.0 HBR2 Eye/Jitter Tests Glbal 3-ple CTLE fr HBR2 Eye and Jitter tests. Enter cefficients in the frmat: Zer (MHz), Ple1 (GHz), Ple2 (GHz), Ple3 (GHz). Fr example: 450, 2.7, 4.5, 13.5. SSC Setting(s) Specifies the state f SSC t use when running tests: Enabled, Disabled, r Bth. The Bth setting will test bth states if SSC can be disabled n the DUT, therwise Bth will retain the enabled state fr thse DUTs where SSC cannt be disabled. Switch Matrix fr 4-Lane Mde Switching matrix t use when perating in 4-Lane mde. Select Mini-Circuits if using Mini-Circuits switch, User if anther switch. Appendix A: Using Hst Prgram Cntrl Mde Hst Prgram Cntrl Mde (HPC) is a new feature that allws QualiPHY t be started by a user s hst prgram with a number f arguments. Once running, a simple Sync File prtcl is used by QualiPHY t signal the hst prgram. When the QualiPHY script requires actin frm the hst prgram, it writes a User Sync File t the disk in.xml frmat cntaining several tags. QualiPHY then pauses executin and waits. The hst prgram shuld set the requested DUT parameters r test system cnfiguratin, respnd as necessary, then delete the User Sync File. When QualiPHY sees that the User Sync File is deleted, it cntinues executin. In the QPHY-eDP script, there are three situatins when a Sync File is written ut: 1. When the user hst prgram needs t change which signals are cnnected t the scillscpe (typically utilized in systems invlving an RF switch) 2. When the user hst prgram needs t change the signal type utput frm the DUT (e.g., the signal s character rate) 3. When an issue errr cnditin has ccurred In rder t use Hst Prgram Cntrl Mde, the fllwing cnsideratins shuld be taken int accunt. Preparing Special Cnfiguratin fr Hst Cntrl Mde In QualiPHY, create a custm Cnfiguratin that has the variables cnfigured in the way yu will need them when yu run in Hst Prgram Cntrl Mde. Make sure yu save the cnfiguratin after editing the variables s that it will be available t refer t when yu startup QualiPHY via cmmand line. Variables that need t be cnsidered t run in HPC are: Hst Prgram Cntrl sync filename Definitin: Use t specify sync file path. Default: C:\eDP_sync_file.xml Cmments: Just use default unless cnflict. Use Hst Prgram Cntrl? Definitin: Set t Yes t use the Hst Prgram Cntrl feature, N therwise. Default: N Cmment: When set t Yes, QualiPHY will pause executin after it creates a sync file and while it is waiting fr the sync file t be deleted. 26

QPHY-eDP Instructin Manual Hst Prgram Elements Needed t Cntrl the QualiPHY Script Launching QualiPHY (XReplay.exe) The Hst prgram needs t launch the QualiPHY applicatin (the actual prgram is named XReplay.exe) with the fllwing cmmand line, including arguments fr edp: C:\Prgram Files(x86)\LeCry\XReplay\XReplay.exe A R E WIZARD TECH:tecDPORT\eDP CONFIG:HstCntrlTest N:IP Address The path shwn abve is where the XReplay.exe prgram (QualiPHY) is placed by the installer. Arguments are: -A Stps all manual user interactin. (Always use) -R Causes the test script (edp in this case) t be run autmatically. (Always use) -E Autmatically exit when test script is dne executing. (Always use) -WIZARD -TECH:tecDPORT\eDP Required. Sets the technlgy t test, edp in this case. -CONFIG:HstCntrlTest Sets the name f the cnfiguratin that will be used; HstCntrlTest in this case. -N:IP Address IP address f the scillscpe: If QualiPHY is running n the scillscpe, set t lcalhst. If QualiPHY is nt running n the scillscpe, set t Hst ID r IP Address f the scillscpe. Mnitring fr QualiPHY Terminatin The hst prgram needs t cntinuusly test t see if the QualiPHY prcess still exists, t be able t knw when the QualiPHY test script has cmpleted and take apprpriate actin. File Transfer Synchrnizatin The hst synchrnizatin cnsists f three parts: 1. Waiting fr C:\eDP_sync_file.xml (r ther name specified in cnfiguratin) t be written by QualiPHY. 2. Reading the file and perfrming the required actins. 3. Deleting C:\eDP_sync_file.xml in rder t signal QualiPHY that the peratin is cmplete. Renaming the Test Reprt The test reprt that is created by the QualiPHY test script is always created with the same name (fr example, D:\QPHY\Reprts\LeCryReprt.pdf). Fr this reasn, it needs t be renamed after QualiPHY (XReplay.exe) terminates in rder t avid verwriting it the next time QualiPHY is run. Nte: The reprt path is C:\LeCry\QPHY\Reprts if QualiPHY is installed n a remte PC instead f the scillscpe. 926426 Rev B 27
