Dr. Donald Pirone has been appointed Director of the Lawrence Eisman Center for Preparatory Studies in Music at Queens College. Anthony Strong, Assistant Professor of Music at Raritan Valley Community College, once again coordinated and participated in their Annual Music Faculty Recital, Sunday, February 24, in the college s Welpe Theatre. The faculty contributed classics, jazz standards and original compositions in a wonderfully varied recital, which also featured several instrumental and vocal guest artists. Of special note was a performance by guest pianist, 13-year old Jinny Li, of Princeton, of the Chaconne from the Sonata in D-flat by John Sichel. Dr. Sichel, a faculty colleague of Mr. Strong at RVCC, had been asked by the NJMTA to offer several of his original compositions for piano for the selected contemporary music divisions of their annual competitions. Jinny was the winner of her division in November of 2007. Mr. Strong contributed a performance of Robert Schumann s Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood), Op. 15. RVCC will host a special event on Saturday, May 10, in the college s Edward Nash Theatre. A program of all-american classics will be presented by the Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Roger Briscoe, featuring the Overture to the School for Scandal and the Adagio by Samuel Barber, Quiet City and the Suite from Rodeo by Aaron Copland and An American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. This event will honor the retirement of Dr. Briscoe, the upcoming anniversary of the Nash Theatre (the CJSO played its inauguration, and presented more concerts there than any single arts organization) and will raise money for the Performing Arts Department s performance fund. The orchestra features many of our community colleagues who also perform in the Plainfield and Hunterdon Symphonies, as well as selected faculty and students from RVCC. Anthony Strong will appear as piano soloist in Rhapsody in Blue. Tickets for May 10 will be available by calling the RVCC theatre box office at 908-725-3420 Sondra Tammam, Co-Director of the Taubman Seminar in NYC, presented lectures and performed the Schubert Trout Quintet with members of the NY Philharmonic at the Rose Hall, Lincoln Center in June. She recently has presented workshops in NY, CT and NH. Her student, Grace Kim, a winner in the YPCNJ competitions, is a freshman at Princeton University. Joshua Kao, 11, is going to perform at the Crescent Ave. Church in Plainfield, as a winner in their annual competition.
