Candidates may also perform pieces from current or past syllabuses (including graded anthologies) at appropriate grade levels in ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool, London College of Music and RSAMD Scottish itional Music Grade Exams. It is the responsibility of centres to provide documentary evidence to support the grade level as presented. If candidates intend to perform, for assessment purposes, pieces which are: not included in SQA s National Qualifications in Music: Performing, or not included in the syllabus of ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool, London College of Music, or RSAMD Scottish itional Music Grade Exams, or not previously approved for your centre by SQA the centre must submit materials for approval by SQA. Centres will be informed of appropriate arrangements and timescales for this. Further details regarding assessment requirements can be found in the Course Assessment Specification. Repertoire for any instrument not included in this document should be referred to SQA for approval. Detailed below is a list of levels in National Qualifications in Music related to their counterparts in Standard Grade, ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool, and London College of Music. Guitar (Electric and Acoustic) Guitar (Electric and Acoustic) Access 3 Candidates may choose to play an entirely chordal programme, or a mixture of chordal and melodic/classical pieces. In either case a minimum of six chords is required. Chords should be played in a continuous accompanying style. Example of minimum standard required: Example 1 (continuous accompaniment) In the above example the chords are played with a simple brush down across all the strings of the chord with either the thumb or a plectrum, once on each beat, to form a continuous accompaniment. 62

Guitar (Electric and Acoustic) Intermediate 1 Candidates may choose to play an entirely chordal programme, or a mixture of chordal and melodic/classical pieces. In either case a minimum of nine chords is required. Chords should be played in a continuous accompanying style, and candidates at this level are expected to demonstrate the ability to play chords in an arpeggiated style. Examples of minimum standard required: Example 1 (arpeggiated chords) Example 1 can be played with the fingers, (p = thumb, i = index, m = middle, a = ring) or with the thumb, or a plectrum. Example 2 (continuous accompaniment) Example 2 can be played with the fingers, (thumb plays bass note, index finger scratches down across the strings) or with a plectrum. Candidates at this level are expected to demonstrate the ability to play chords in a more demanding arpeggiated style, using barré chords and more complex playing techniques appropriate to the style of the music. Barré Chords Barré or bar chords are played by extending a finger (usually the first) so that several strings are fretted by the one finger. A full bar covers all six strings. A partial bar can cover from two to five strings. In the examples shown below in the normal guitar chord boxes the numbers shown refer to the left hand fingers. 64

Chords should be played in a continuous accompanying style, and candidates at this level are expected to demonstrate the ability to play chords in a more demanding arpeggiated style. Barré chords, varied textures and more complex playing techniques appropriate to the style of music are expected. Techniques might include alternating bass, runs, slurring, bending and harmonics. Examples of minimum standard required: Example 1 (arpeggiated chords with alternating bass and a run) Example 1 is played with the fingers (p = thumb, i = index, m = middle finger). Example 2 (12 - bar blues with walking bass) Example 2 can be played with the fingers as shown or with a plectrum. 66

Example 4 (fast continuous rhythm with slurred alternating bass) H = hammer-on (ascending slur) PO = pull-off (descending slur) BU = bend up (raise fretted note to destination pitch by pushing or pulling string sideways). Example 4 is best played with a plectrum. Example 5 (slurs and bass runs) Example 5 (slurs and bass runs) Example 5 can be played with a plectrum, or with the fingers (thumb plays bass notes, index finger scratches down and up over the chord). 67
