Welcme The Manly Selective Campus Ensembles Prgram (established 1990) is a highly successful band prgram that enjys an enviable reputatin thrughut Sydney and New Suth Wales. The varius ensembles enjy perfrming at music festivals, and ging n reginal and interstate turs. The Manly Selective Campus prgram is successful because it emphasizes three imprtant things: cmmitment, dedicatin and abve all, the pursuit f musical excellence. This infrmatin bklet prvides an verview f the prgram. By understanding hw the prgram wrks, the expectatins f band membership and yur rle in the prcess, yu will be helping us maintain the prgram s exemplary standards. Band Prgram) n 0414 791 462 Prgram Structure The ensembles prgram emplys prfessinal musical directrs t instruct ur students in the many varied ensemble types. The diversity f skill amngst ur students is evident in the prgram's structure, currently cmprising 10 separate ensembles cvering the styles f cncert band, stage band, strings and imprvisatin. It is imperative that students achieve grunding in a variety f styles t ensure adequate technical and musical develpment. Therefre all students in the prgram must be a member f the Cncert Stream Cncert Band, Wind Ensemble r Symphnic Wind Orchestra - t be cnsidered fr ther ensembles. The exceptins t this plicy are the strings ensemble and Imprvisatin Wrkshp, the latter being pen t any student interested in learning and explring the fundamentals f imprvisatin. Jining the Band Prgram Membership is pen t all interested students frm years 7 t 12 with a minimum f ne year s instrumental playing experience. All applicants will undertake an auditin t help determine placement in the mst suitable ensemble. In December/January an auditin package will be mailed r emailed t all students wh have cmpleted an Expressin f Interest frm, available at the back f this handbk. Existing members will autmatically receive the infrmatin. Auditins Auditins take place at the start f Term 1 and the results are psted n the Band Ntice Bard utside the Band rm shrtly thereafter. The auditin prcess is a necessary part f ur prgram design. Manly Selective Campus enrls a chrt f exemplary students each year, and t ensure that ur prgram ffers the necessary challenges t stretch the gifted and talented musicians amng us, we re-auditin all members nt already in the mst senir ensembles each year t allw fr prgressin up the ensemble structure. It is imprtant that the students auditining fr placement and their parents understand and accept the selectin prcess. Careful cnsideratin f the makeup f each ensemble is necessary in rder t maintain a high standard and is nt intended t discurage students. The prgram seeks t prvide an pprtunity t achieve musical excellence. Auditin Requirements ONE SOLO PIECE A piece that best demnstrates yur musical and technical ability (accmpaniment is nt necessary) SIGHT READING T be given n the day SCALES Chrmatic scale (full range where pssible) Majr r minr scale (wn chice) Students auditining fr advanced ensembles must als be prepared t play any majr r minr scale cmmensurate t their grade.

Our Ensembles The majrity f students in year 7 and 8 are placed in Cncert Band, Chamber Strings, Wind Ensemble and/r Stage Band. Exceptins are nly made where students demnstrate exceptinal skill. CONCERT BAND STREAM The cncert band stream incrprates all instruments except strings. There are hwever nly limited places fr pianists and bass guitarists. Expected minimum standards fr members f these ensembles are: CONCERT BAND Directr Mr Craig Driscll Cmprised f students between Years 7 and 10 wh have been playing fr 1 r mre years. WIND ENSEMBLE Directr Mr Mark Brwn Cmprised f students, predminantly frm Years 7 t 10, wh have played fr 2 years r mre r have reached a minimum standard f 3rd grade in sight-reading (sectin leaders 5th r 6th grade). SYMPHONIC WIND ORCHESTRA Directr - Mr Mark Brwn Fr students, predminantly frm Years 9 t 12, wh have nrmally attained a minimum level f 5th Grade AMEB r equivalent (sectin leaders 8th grade r AMus). STAGE BAND STREAM Directr - Mr Craig Driscll Instrumentatin fr the stage bands includes trumpets, saxphnes, trmbnes and ne each f drums, bass guitar, keybard, rhythm guitar and vcals. Students must be a member f ne f the cncert bands t be ffered a psitin in ne f the stage bands (vcals excepted). STAGE BAND Fr students frm Years 7 t 10 wh have played fr 1 r mre years. BIG BAND Cmprised f students, predminantly frm Years 7 t 10, wh have played fr 2 years r mre r reached a minimum standard f 3rd grade in sightreading. JAZZ ORCHESTRA Fr students frm Years 9 t 12 (yunger if advanced standard), nrmally having attained a minimum level f 6th Grade AMEB r equivalent. CHAMBER STRING ENSEMBLE Directr - Mr Steve Buchanan The Chamber String Ensemble accepts students frm all years wh have a minimum f 1 t 2 years playing experience. The instrumentatin includes vilins, vilas, cells and duble bass. Each year a psitin is available fr ne r tw pianists with abve average sight-reading skills. IMPROVISATION STREAM Directr Mr Clin Bright While the ther streams will challenge students in the wrld f structured music, the fcus f this stream is t understand what yu need t knw and cnsider when yu want t deviate frm the written scre. Playing by ear and learning t play jazz standards will feature. Interested students are encuraged t jin the Imprvisatin Wrkshp. IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP The wrkshp is pen t any student in the schl wh wuld like t learn the fundamentals f imprvisatin. N auditin is required, as this prgram caters fr a wide range f musical expertise, ranging frm students wh have been playing an instrument fr a minimum f 1 year right up t accmplished musicians. Its aim is t give students a thrugh grunding in the thery and practice f imprvisatin JAZZ PERFORMANCE GROUPS Students wh have reached a sufficient level f prficiency in imprvisatin and wish t get ut there in frnt f an audience may be invited t jin ne f the jazz perfrmance grups. They must als be a member f ne f the cncert bands.

Rehearsals,Turs, Perfrmances,Camps It is imperative that students attend all rehearsals, perfrmances and annual turs r camps. The directrs place students accrding t ability and strive t prduce quality and balanced ensembles acrss the prgram. By accepting a psitin, bth the parents and the student are cmmitting t being punctual and attending all rehearsals, assciated cncerts, cmpetitins, turs and camps thrughut the year. Turs and band camps are nt ptinal events, but essential t ensuring a quality ensemble. REHEARSALS Rehearsals fr each ensemble ccur nce per week. Please ntify the band directr either directly r via the band parent rep f any issue attending a rehearsal as the band has a duty f care fr students t the schl. Rehearsal times fr 2009 will be as fllws, at lcatins t be advised. Typically bth are f 4 r 5 days duratin. The turs travel t reginal NSW, where the students perfrm at ther schls and cmmunity centres. The band camp invlves guest tutrs and evening activities. The cst varies frm $350-$500 depending n the destinatin and duratin. INTERNATIONAL TOURS The band prgram anticipates that every 3 years the senir cncert and stage bands will tur verseas. The intent is that each student wh prgresses thrugh the MSC prgram has the pprtunity t experience a different culture and perfrmance setting. MSC bands have tured Austria (2004) and Japan (2008). Band Prgram Fees The band prgram at Manly Selective Campus perates n a nn-prfit basis and is funded essentially thrugh band fees paid by participating students. Finances are als assisted by fundraising activities and sme grants and dnatins during the year. Every attempt is made t keep the fees as lw as pssible t ensure that the music prgram remains accessible t all interested students. Fees are payable n invice at the beginning f the year fr Semester 1 (Terms 1 and 2) and again at the beginning f Term 3 fr Semester 2. Band fees are made up f tw cmpnents: a prgram membership (aka. administratin) fee, and a fee fr each ensemble t which the student belngs. Fees per semester fr 2008 were as fllws and there may well be small adjustments fr 2009: Prgram Membership Fee $135 Ensemble Fees: Cncert Band $50 Wind Ensemble $50 Symphnic Wind Orchestra $50 Stage Band $80 Big Band $80 Jazz Orchestra $80 Chamber String Ensemble $90 ImprShp $90 I-Jazz Perfrmance $90 S-Jazz Perfrmance $90 Fr example, the per semester fees fr a student in bth the Wind Ensemble plus the Stage Band wuld be $135 (prgram fee) plus $50 (Wind Ensemble) plus $80 (Stage Band) giving a ttal f $265 each semester (ie. $530 fr the year). Mnies raised thrugh fees are used t cver the running csts f the prgram. These include payments fr the services f ur Band Directrs, new music, nn-musical equipment, guest cnductrs and cmpetitin entry fees. Instrument purchases are paid fr thrugh fundraising activities. Payment fr turs and wrkshps is cvered by cntributins directly frm the participants. Payment may be by cheque, cash, credit card r the preferred methd f payment f electrnic transfer.

Tutrials All students participating in the ensembles prgram are expected t have a private weekly tutrial n their instrument. It is highly recmmended that, nce reaching high schl, students ensure that they are learning frm an accredited instrumental teacher i.e. teachers with a tertiary music degree in the instrument they teach. The purpse f prfessinal tuitin is t teach the students crrect technique in breathing, musical ntatin, sight-reading and musicality. Please cnsider the qualificatins and experience f the tutr befre agreeing t lessns. High schl aged students shuld nt be learning frm high schl aged tutrs. Instrument Hire It is expected that students entering the MSC prgram already wn an instrument. The Band Prgram hire ut nly thse instruments that are less cmmnly played, r are mre expensive t purchase yet essential t enhancing the quality f ur bands. Instruments are allcated t students by the band directrs. Manly Selective Campus Instruments. Instruments available fr hire include tenr saxphnes, baritne saxphnes, French hrns, bass clarinets, bass trmbne, duble bass and tuba. Arts Unit instruments. Sme instruments that ur bands lack may be hired frm the Arts Unit (aka. PAU) f the Department f Educatin. Talk t the directrs during auditins fr details. Hire, Service and Insurance Fees The hire and maintenance f the instruments is set by the Band Cmmittee and reviewed annually. It is anticipated that in 2009, members will be inviced a service fee rather than a hire charge, t maintain the quality f the instruments. While these instruments are insured by the Band Prgram, it is the respnsibility f the players t lk after them, particularly if taken hme r t perfrmances. Parent/Student Cmmunicatin The Band Prgram uses 2 main frms f cmmunicatin with parents: The Weekly Pines - the schl newsletter that is published each Friday; the band prgram puts imprtant details in this newsletter each week. Email please supply an email address n the Expressin f Interest frm The fllwing infrmatin will be distributed: Cmmittee member and parent band rep names and phne numbers Perfrmance dates and times Cncert and Tur Infrmatin Requests fr assistance Certain times f the year are very busy, especially the end f term 2 / beginning f term 3 (cmpetitin seasn) and the end f term 4 with the numerus end-f-year and graduatin ceremnies. Our Directrs Mr Mark Brwn BMus(hns) Mark was appinted the MSC Prgram Directr in 2007. He cnducts the cncert stream ensembles, and has leadership respnsibility fr the chesin acrss all musical streams. Mark has becme highly sught after as a mtivatinal guest cnductr, especially with yuth and cmmunity grups. Guest seasns include Sydney Yuth Philharmnic Orchestra, Ku-ring-gai Philharmnic, Sutherland Shire Symphny, Lane Cve Yuth Orchestra, Msman Symphny, Verbruggen Orchestra, State Educatin Department Music Camps and many schl grups. He is currently the Musical Directr f the Lane Cve Yuth Orchestra Since arriving at MSC, Mark has intrduced a variety f multi-stream innvatins (eg. rchestral bands, cmbined all bands, chir/cncert cmbinatins), as well as perfrmances at premier venues (eg. St Patrick s chapel, Manly). Mark is a duble graduate f the NSW State Cnservatrium f Music, having gained bth a Bachelr f Music (Hnurs) in Trmbne Perfrmance (1996) and a Certificate f Pian Tuning and Technlgy (1982). He studied trmbne with Arthur Hubbard and Rn Prussing as well as cnducting with Henryk Pisarek. His prfessinal trmbne credits include Sydney Symphny Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, English Natinal Ballet, Sydney Philharmnia, Sydney Seasns f Phantm f the Opera, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Miss Saign, Crazy fr Yu, My Fair Lady, The Merry Widw, The Mikad, Michael Crawfrd Australian Tur, N.S.W. Plice Band, Tmmy Tych, Ed Wilsn Big Band, three internatinal cntracts with P. & O. Cruises, club gigs backing variety artists and rck bands. In 1994 Mark was awarded the Bellhuse Memrial Cnducting Schlarship and in 1995 was selected fr the Ku-ring-gai Philharmnic Orchestra Cnductr in Training prgram under Maestr Henryk Pisarek. During this time he was als assistant cnductr t Steve Williams with the Cnservatrium Wind Orchestra. He later travelled t the Czech Republic and attended the Symphnic Wrkshps Internatinal Schl fr Cnducting studying under Maestrs Kirk Trevr, Tsung Ye and Jhanes Schafli. Frm 1999-2005 Mark was directr f the large band prgram at St. Patrick s Cllege Sutherland where he als taught lw brass and trmbne. Mark als directed the stage band at Sydney Technical High Schl frm 2000-2005, was Directr f Music at Sutherland Shire Brass frm 2001-2004 and cnductr f bth cncert bands at Prt Hacking High Schl frm 2003-2005. In 2006 Mark was cntracted t the N.S.W. Plice Band fr twelve mnths as guest Principal Euphnium and Trmbne. Mr Craig Driscll BMus ADJazzS Craig is the directr fr the MSC Stage Stream, and has been with the MSC prgram since 2000. Craig has been a prfessinal musician fr the past 19 years and graduated frm the Sydney Cnservatrium f Music with a Diplma in Jazz Studies and a Bachelr f Music. He als studied in New Yrk with varius perfrmers including Gerge Cleman frm Miles Davis's band f the 50's. Craig plays saxphnes, clarinets and flutes prfessinally. He has tured Eurpe, America, Suth America, Asia and Australia with the Australian Wind Orchestra, the Brass Machine Big Band, Miss Saign, Oliver and Chicag cmpanies and the Belvir St Theatre. He has als perfrmed in the rchestras fr The Phantm f the Opera, Miss Saign, Shwbat, Crazy fr Yu, West Side Stry, The Wizard f Oz, Annie, Prgy and Bess, The Merry Widw, The Sund f Music, Cats, The Prducers, Titanic and varius ther prductins. Craig appeared as a slist with the Sydney Cnservatrium Orchestra and plays as lead Alt in the Jhn Mrrisn Big Band and regularly in the Jazz and cmmercial scene f Sydney.

Mr Stephen Buchanan BMus As an educatr, Stephen has been an instrumental tutr ever since he left schl in 1994, and has taught in many f the City's tp schls. He has been the directr f the String Ensemble at Manly High Selective Campus since July 2004 and has grwn the grup in bth numbers and standard with a real enjyment fr the art f playing a string instrument. Stephen cmmenced his musical studies at the age f 6 when he started pian tuitin. At the age f 14 Stephen began t play the duble bass and cmpleted his tertiary studies as a duble bass majr at the Sydney Cnservatrium in 1998, studying under Rbert Nairn. As a student Stephen was the principal duble bassist with bth the Sydney Yuth Orchestra and the SBS Yuth Orchestra with which he tured t New Calednia, Italy, Malta and Japan. As a prfessinal Stephen has made a name fr himself bth as a duble bassist, bass guitarist and musical directr fr varius freelance ensembles. He was the bassist fr Rger Wdward's Spring Festival fr three years and has perfrmed as a prfessinal freelance artist backing the likes f David Campbell, Marina Prir, Anthny Warlw and Tmmy Tych. Stephen has made many recrdings fr Radi, Televisin and CD release and was the label manager fr a lcal recrd cmpany fr 4 years. He is currently the prprietr f his wn live music bking agency Harbur City Entertainment. in Abriginal music led t him t adpt Peter Sculthrpe as a mentr thrugh the early seventies. S far, these pieces invlve finding smething f the essence f a writer/pet (& sampling their vice), which, when integrated with the music adds a theatrical r meta-musical dimensin.' Clin s early wrk ften includes didgerids (Earth Spirit 1982, Fire n the Lake 1989) r cncentrates n creating a true Australian sund (Red Earth 1985) culminating in the pera The Sinking f the Rainbw Warrir (1993/94). Mre recently, a number f different wrks have emerged in which the fcus gradually shifts twards what the cmpser calls 'urban psychscapes'. His literary surces s far have included Jas Duke, Amanda Stewart and W. S. Burrughs. Other cmpsitin highlights include: The Sinking f the Rainbw Warrir was perfrmed as part f the Sydney Festival in 1997 and has since been released n CD (VAST028-2). Mr Clin Bright Clin is the musical directr fr MSC s Imprvisatin Stream. Clin Bright has since received Cmpser Fellwships, Internatinal Fellwships and cmmissins frm mst f Australia's leading ensembles and his music has been perfrmed and bradcast in 27 cuntries arund the wrld. He was awarded a 2 year Cmpser Fellwship frm the Music Bard f the Australia Cuncil, 2003-4. Recently, he was cmmissined by Twnsville City Cuncil t cmpse Wrds On Water t pen their Writer Festival. He was the Trans-Tasman exchange cmpser fr 2007 and wrked with the Auckland Philharmnic Orchestra, wh cmmissined a new wrk. Cntrary t Australia's ther leading cmpsers, Clin Bright is essentially self-taught. His early invlvement in sci-plitical issues and his interest The Wild Bys was awarded Best Cmpsitin f the Year at the Sunds Australian Awards in 1997 and was selected as the Australian entry fr the 1997 Paris Rstrum. Black Years - Red Years wn the NSW award fr Best Cmpsitin at the 2000 Sunds Australian awards. Let the Strm Break Lse was shrt-listed fr Best Cmpsitin at the 2005 Sunds Australian/APRA awards. The Last Whale (fr vices, 4 players and electrnics) was awarded Best Cmpsitin by an Australian Cmpser at the 2008 Classical Music Awards at the Sydney Opera Huse.

Band Cmmittee 2009 The Band Cmmittee is a sub cmmittee f the Parents and Citizens Assciatin and is respnsible fr managing the Band Prgram. It cnsists f band parents wh actively supprt the musical directrs with: implementing prgram strategy aligned t the schl plan, financial management (budgeting, enrlments, accunting) cmmunicatin (eg. Parent band representative, events calendar, schl liaisn) lgistics fr majr events (eg. Internatinal turs, St Patrick s Premier cncert), scial events r fundraising (eg. Dinner Dance, City t Surf, verseas student billeting). The AGM is held at the end f the year and the 9 r 10 cmmittee meetings thrughut the year are usually n a Mnday evening. During these meetings, ideas and issues are discussed and vted n. This is the frum fr parents wh: like t knw what makes the band prgram tick, have an idea r cncern t put frward wish t knw what their children aren t telling them! want t get t knw sme ther parents and staff are aligned t the schl s giving back t the cmmunity eths. Parents wishing t lend a hand are invited t attend meetings and/r cntact yur band representative t ffer assistance.
