WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 1 of 3) tense The tense of a verb shows if the action already happened, is happening, or will happen in the future. The tense, or form, of a verb tells when the action happened. To show the future tense of "go," add "will," as in "he will go." persuade I wanted you to persuade him to come to the meeting, not dissuade him from coming. To persuade someone is to try and get them to change their mind. The purpose of the essay was to try and persuade the reader to see the issue from the author's point of view. browse When you browse, you look through something in a casual way; you don't read every word. If you browse through, or skim, a newspaper, you look at it quickly to get an idea of the stories that are in it. I will browse through the aisles at the grocery store to find the perfect dessert.

WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 2 of 3) rising action Rising action refers to the events that lead up to the climax, or high point of the story. There are five main parts of a plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Rising action is like a the gradual increase of volume in a piece of music. tone Tone is like the manner or style in which a writer expresses him - or herself. Tone refers to the overall mood of a story, play, or poem. The tone of a limerick is very lighthearted. project A project is an assignment or task that requires planning and work to finish. This fall, our class project is to learn about people who were important to the civil rights movement. I haven't decided what to do for my science project, have you?

WORDS IN CONTEXT DAY 1 (Page 3 of 3) inspect If you want to buy a house, be sure to inspect it for things like wall cracks and roof leaks, as well as evidence of mold, bugs, and mice. One of the jobs of a firefighter is to inspect, or examine, buildings to make sure they are safe. Before you sign any legal document, it's important to inspect it carefully. applaud The school play was so good that the audience stood to applaud, or clap, for a long time. I applaud, or praise, you for all the hard work you've put into this project. I hope I play well and that people applaud at my recital. fabulous (adjective) Something fabulous might also be described as wonderful, extraordinary, tremendous, and remarkable. Hawaii has many fabulous beaches. We had a fabulous time on our trip until we got caught in an awful storm on the last night.
