Find The Error 1. He was very angry not happy. 2. The monkey was very tired not ready for the show. 3. You re the minister s son aren t you? 1/6

2/6

The Rule Think about words/phrases we use to contrast ideas in order to set apart opposing thoughts within a sentence. Examples: 1. Jane talks to me as an adult and friend, not as her little sister. 2. Celia, unlike Robert, has no loathing for dance contests. 3. Some say the world will end in ice, not fire. 3/6

Find the Error Corrections 1. He was very angry, not happy. 2. The monkey was very tired, not ready for the show. 3. You re the minister s son, aren t you? 4/6

Additional Practice 1. The child seemed excited almost ecstatic. 2. The porter came for her money not her company. 3. The men were messy much to the dislike of the maids. 5/6

Additional Practice Corrections 1. The child seemed excited, almost ecstatic. 2. The porter came for her money, not her company. 3. The men were messy, much to the dislike of the maids. 6/6

Find The Error 1. Crossing the road here is dangerous therefore we should find a crosswalk. 2. Eric headed this way however he did not talk to me. 3. The rules of soccer as far as we know do not allow that kind of contact. 1/7

THINK: What does this mean? 2/7

The Rule Transitions are bridges between sentences or parts of sentences. Common examples: For example, in other words, in fact, in the first place, and as a matter of fact Examples: As a matter of fact, American football was established by fans who wanted to play a more organized game of rugby. Celery, for example, contains more sodium than most people would imagine. 3/7

Conjunctive adverbs: however, therefore, furthermore, moreover, nevertheless, thus, consequently When such words are used between independent clauses, they are preceded by a semicolon and are usually followed by a comma. Otherwise they are usually separated from the rest of the sentence with commas. Examples: The prospective babysitter was very kind; however, she was busy every Saturday for a month. The major benefit of flex-time to working parents, however, is the opportunity to spend more time with their children. 4/7

EXCEPTION: If a transition or conjunctive adverb blends smoothly with the rest of the sentence, calling for little or no pause in reading, it does not need to be set off with a comma. Expressions that do not necessarily call for a pause: also, at least, certainly, consequently, indeed, of course, moreover, no doubt, perhaps, then, therefore Example: Bill s typewriter is broken; you will therefore need to borrow Sue s. 5/7

Expressions that are distinctly parenthetical should be set off with commas. Providing supplemental comments or information, they interrupt the flow of a sentence or appear as afterthoughts. Example: Evolution, so far as we know, doesn t work this way. 6/7

Find The Error Corrections 1. Crossing the road here is dangerous; therefore, we should find a crosswalk. 2. Eric headed this way; however, he did not talk to me. 3. The rules of soccer, as far as we know, do not allow that kind of contact. 7/7

Find The Error 1. May, 5 th 1970 was my birthday. 2. He died after a long life in Dublin Ireland. 3. Joann Patterson P.H.D. was a good friend of mine. 1/6

2/6

The Rule Explained In dates, the year is set off from the rest of the sentence with a pair of commas. Exception: If the date is inverted, commas are not needed. Example: 25 December 2014 The elements of an address or place name are followed by commas. A zip code, however, is not preceded by a comma. If a title follows a name, separate it from the rest of the sentence with a pair of commas. 3/6

Find the Error Corrections 1. May 5 th, 1970, was my birthday. 2. He died after a long life in Dublin, Ireland. 3. Joann Patterson, P.H.D., was a good friend of mine. 4/6

Additional Practice 1. I can t wait for his party on May 5 th 2011. 2. Could you deliver the pizza to 8163 42 nd Street Chicago Illinois 58712? 5/6

Additional Practice Corrections 1. I can t wait for his party on May 5 th, 2011. 2. Could you deliver the pizza to 8163, 42 nd Street, Chicago, Illinois 58712? 6/6

Using commas with quotes 1/4

Commas with Quotations 1. Use double quotation marks to set off a direct (wordfor-word) quotation. Example: "When will you be here?" he asked. 2. Either quotation marks or italics are customary for titles: songs, poems, article titles, chapter titles, etc. Not ok: magazines, books, plays, films these should be in italics 2/4

More Commas with Quotations 3a. Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks. Examples: The sign said, "Walk." Then it said, "Don't Walk," then, "Walk," all within thirty seconds. He yelled, "Hurry up." 3b. Use single quotation marks for quotations within quotations. Example: He said, "Dan cried, 'Do not treat me that way.' " Note: The period goes inside both the single and double quotation marks. 3/4

Even More Commas with Quotations 4. Commas are within quotation marks if the tag is at the end of a sentence. Example: I cannot believe you said that, she exclaimed. Note: If the dialogue ends with a? or an!, no comma needed. 5. Quotation marks are often used with technical terms, terms used in an unusual way, or other expressions that vary from standard usage. Examples: It's an oil-extraction method known as "fracking." He did some "experimenting" in his college days. I had a visit from my "friend" the tax man. 4/4
