Otherwise they are usually separated from the rest of the sentence with commas. Examples: The prospective babysitter was very kind; however, she was busy every Saturday for a month. Commas with Quotations 1. Use double quotation marks to set off a direct (wordfor-word) quotation. Example: "When will you be here?" he asked. 2. Either quotation marks or italics are customary for titles: songs, poems, article titles, chapter titles, etc. Not ok: magazines, books, plays, films these should be in italics 2/4
More Commas with Quotations 3a. Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks. Examples: The sign said, "Walk." Then it said, "Don't Walk," then, "Walk," all within thirty seconds. He yelled, "Hurry up." 3b. Use single quotation marks for quotations within quotations. Example: He said, "Dan cried, 'Do not treat me that way.'
