TD40 Remote Control FAQs How do I use the remote control to change settings in the TD40 user menus? How do I navigate through the user menus? You use the Menu/Set, the VOL+, VOL-, CH+ and CH- to navigate among the submenus and to change the settings. The Back button allows you to return to the previous menu. The Menu/Set button opens the menus and accepts changes you make in the settings. The Back button returns you to the previous menu or closes the menus. The CH+ and CH buttons allow you to navigate up and down in the menus. The VOL+ and VOL buttons allow you to navigate to the between the main menu and submenus, and to change settings. In addition, the remote has a number of shortcut buttons that allow you quick access to frequently used commands or settings. You ll find information about the shortcut buttons after the next section. Using the two types of menus There are two types of menu items on the TD40. One menu item includes a submenu, and the other simply toggles settings on or off, or allows you to change a setting such as an input source. To change a setting that has a submenu Let s say you want to fine tune a broadcast channel. To do this, you use the Fine Tune menu. The Fine Tune menu includes a submenu that allows you to change the tuner adjustment. 1 Press the Menu/Set button to display the menus. The five main menus appear on the left. The Picture menu appears by default.
2 Use the CH- button to cycle through the main menus until the TV menu is selected. The TV menu choices appear on the right. 3 To access the menu choices, press the VOL+ button. The top menu item, Channel Type, turns blue. 4 Press the CH key to select Fine Tune. 5 Press the Menu/Select button to open the Fine Tune submenu. 6 Use the VOL+ and VOL buttons to move the slider to the right or left to fine tune the picture. 2
7 When you finish, press the Menu/Set button to accept the change. Then press the Back button again to exit the menus. To change a menu that toggles a setting on or off or specifies a setting Some menu items turn a setting off or on, or allow you to select from several settings. For example, the Channel Type menu item on the TV menu allows you to specify whether the TV input is from cable or antenna. 1 Press the Menu/Set button to display the menus. 5 Use the CH+ or CH button to cycle through the settings. You can select CATV (cable), AIR (antenna), IRC (high definition) or HRC (high definition). 6 Press the Menu/Set button to accept your choice. 7 Press the Back button to exit the menus. Using the remote control shortcut buttons The TD40 remote includes a number of buttons in the bottom third that allow shortcuts to frequently used commands. Most of the settings are also available in the user menus. Below is a chart and diagram that describe these functions. Button Function Description Favorite V.Size Tunes to a preset favorite channel Change the aspect ratio of the image Allows you to specify a channel that you want quick access to. Pressing the Favorite button allows you to tune that channel regardless of the current channel or input source. Allows you to cycle through the following settings: Wide 16:9 widescreen for viewing HDTV. Will make standard TV and computer images appear wider than normal. Panoramic Stretches 4:3 images to full screen. The outside ¼ of each side is stretched, while the inside ½ of the image is unaffected. Zoom1 Zooms into the picture. Usually the top and bottom of the image no longer fit the screen. Zoom2 Zooms closer than Zoom1. 4:3 Shows the image with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The image fits 4
the screen top to bottom, but leaves black areas on the right and left sides. Pre CH Previous channel Press the button to return to previously tuned TV channel. MTS Change the audio mode Pressing the button allows you to select Stereo, Mono or SAP CH INFO Channel Information Press to display time, screen aspect ratio, channel number, and audio mode. PICTURE Change the picture mode (includes tint, saturation, contrast, brightness, sharpness) Press to select from preset picture modes: Standard The default mode Vivid Brightness, contrast, saturation and sharpness set higher than the Standard mode Mild Brightness, contrast, saturation and sharpness set lower than the Standard mode User Your personalized settings. STILL Freezes the image Press to freeze the current image. Note that this does not pause a video source; it only freezes the current image. To return to regular motion, press the Still button again. SOUND SLEEP TIME DIGEST CH ADD CH ERASE Change the audio equalizer setting Specify a time interval in minutes for automatic power down Displays the current time Displays 15 channels simultaneously on the screen Adds current channel to memorized list Deletes the current channel from the memorized list Press to select from preset audio equalizer modes: Standard The default mode Movie Music Increased bass. News Uses less bass and more treble. User Your personalized settings. Pressing the button cycles through the following choices: OFF > 10 > 20 > 30 > 60 > 90 > 120 > 150 > 180 Time must be set via Time menu > Set Time. The displayed channels are the first 15 in the tuner memory. You can enter any channel number and go to that channel, or you can press the DIGEST button again to close it and return to the previously selected channel. 5
CLOSE CAPTION V-CHIP Displays closed caption content Opens the V-chip menu Allows you to cycle through four closed caption text settings, CC1, CC2, Text1 and Text2. The V-chip menu allows you to specify television or movie content that you want blocked on the TD40. See the User s Guide for information on setting up the V-chip. PIP Picture in Picture Allows you to see another channel or source inside the selected channel or source. For more information about setting up PIP in the user menus, see the User s Guide. The four settings on the remote control are: MODE ON/OFF Turns PIP on. The second source appears in the upper right corner of the main picture (unless you have specified otherwise in the PIP menu). As you press MODE again, the second source display cycles through the three PIP modes: small picture, large picture, split screen and off. SOURCE Press the source button to change the second source. As you press the Source button, you cycle through the various inputs. Note that there is a slight delay while the TD40 locks onto the selected input. SWAP Changes the view so that the small picture becomes the main image, and the main image becomes the small picture. MOVE Changes the location of the small picture from corner to corner. Some of the remote control buttons do not work 1 Make sure the current source supports the button you press. Depending on which source is selected, some of the buttons may not function. If the current source is a DVD player or HD cable box, for example, most buttons that apply to the TD40 TV tuner will not operate. 2 Turn the unit off, then disconnect the power cord. Reconnect the power cord and turn unit on. 3 Replace the batteries. 4 Replace the remote. None of the remote control buttons work 1 Make sure you aim the remote directly at the TD40. Make sure there is nothing blocking the IR receiver next to the Power button on the front of the set. 2 Make sure you are within the remote s range. See the illustration below. 6
3 Replace the batteries. 4 If possible, use a known good remote control. If the known good remote works, the remote probably needs to be replaced. If the known good remote does not work, there is an internal problem with the TV. Contact Technical Support. What is the DIGEST button for? The Digest function allows you to view still frames of 14 adjacent channels. The small thumbnails of the channels surround the currently selected channel. The channels appear one at a time, first with motion, and then as a still. After the first fourteen channels appear, the next 14 (if available in memory) appear one at a time. The cycle continues until all channels (up to 125) appear. 7
