With digital signals offering up to five times the resolution of ordinary TV broadcasts, the difference is incredible. To experience these brilliant life-like pictures you need an HD receiver or HD DVD player and a compatible TV, one capable of showing every minute detail of the original signal. WHAT IS HDTV? High Definition television is a broadcast and pre-recorded video format that delivers picture quality vastly superior to standard definition television and even DVD. The PAL TV standard in the UK creates a picture with 576 lines made up of two halfresolution frames interlaced together. HDTV offers up to 5 times more detail and clarity. There are three different HD formats: 720p: 720 lines progressively scanned 1080i: 1080 lines interlaced together 1080p: 1080 lines progressively scanned STANDARD DIGITAL TV A TV is said to be HD Ready if it can display 1280 x 720 lines, or around 920,000 pixels of data. All of Toshiba s REGZA LCD TVs are capable of handling these 720p signals. A good proportion of existing broadcasts and DVD output is produced using this resolution standard. The highest definition signal available today carries 1920 x 1080 lines, producing over 2 million individual pixels. REGZA 1080 HD LCD TVs can receive both 1080i (interlaced) and the next generation 1080p (progressive) offering the highest image quality imaginable. HDMI HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is the modern day equivalent of the SCART connection. It is the industry standard way to connect High Definition devices to transmit uncompressed digital video and audio content over a single cable for optimum results. LIVE THE MOMENT WITH 100Hz Toshiba s REGZA Z Series uses 100Hz scanning technology as part of its Active Vision M100 HD picture processing engine. To the highly-trained eye, fast-moving, detailed images such as those in high-speed sports footage, can cause a slight judder effect with 50Hz LCD TVs. Toshiba s Active Vision M100 HD technology overcomes this problem by doubling the number of pictures displayed on screen. A new frame of information is then inserted between the two original frames for images that stay precise, smooth and natural looking. During this process Active Vision M100 HD uses a clever process known as 360º Motion Estimation. This monitors motion frame by frame across the entire image and inserts estimated picture information where it predicts movement should be. Active Vision M100HD is available on Z Series models By creating a new frame from two original frames and doubling the number of frames, Active Vision M100 reduces afterimages. Active Vision LCD is Toshiba s high performance picture processing system that produces high quality images by enhancing the four core elements of the television picture: 1. Detail three times more pixels are utilised than with a conventional LCD TV for super fine images across all colour tones. With Active Vision Without Active Vision Toshiba s Real Digital picture processing technology is integral to delivering high quality High Definition images. It reduces the number of separate signal conversions that normally occur in an LCD TV, meaning the signal arrives at the panel processing chip with more of the original picture signal information retained. 3. Movement Real Speed Progressive technology increases picture sharpness during fast moving scenes by reducing jagged edges on lines and detail. Active Vision LCD displays full picture frames (progressive scan) rather than half frame, interlaced images. Striving for Perfection Building on its heritage of producing award-winning, class-leading image processing technologies, Toshiba now raises the bar with its latest offering of high-end picture enhancement technology. FULL 10BIT PROCESSING Conventional LCD TVs utilise 8bit processing which reproduces a colour pallet of 16.7 million colours. For missing colours a process known as dithering is applied to approximate colour tones from those available. However, where subtle colour tone differences are apparent, defects such as poor gradation or colour banding can occur. Toshiba Z and XF Series incorporate FULL 10bit processing from the input source, during image processing and finally addressing the LCD panel. Full 10bit processing results in 30bit True Colour which reproduces a staggering colour palette of over 1 BILLION COLOURS. DYNAMIC GAMMA CURVE CORRECTION Dynamic Gamma Curve Correction constantly changes the brightness, contrast and colour balance by assigning new values to the mid tone grey or colour tones within the image. This expands detail in every frame making it easier to see differences between a grey, slightly darker grey and so on, optimizing picture reproduction resulting in minimal loss of subtle detail. CINEMA-LIKE FEEL REGZA models feature Toshiba s 24fps image processing technology, which is a real bonus for movie fans who appreciate film as it was originally intended. FILM JUDDER CANCELLER Original footage is filmed in 24 frames per second (fps), 50fps or 60fps. However, the UK PAL TV standard displays 50fps. Toshiba has long been a pioneer in the development of image processing systems that help to reproduce any footage in a natural way with smooth movement across the whole screen keeping image irregularities to a minimum. Active Vision M100 HD incorporates two complicated techniques which work together to reduce film judder. This can occur when converting 24fps to the 50fps standard, as frames can be lost resulting in juddered movement. Large internal memory digitally reproduces frames and inserts them between original frames, resulting in 100fps being displayed on screen, delivering super smooth motion even with fast moving scenes. 360º Motion Estimation then constantly looks at the whole of the image inserting estimated detail in the intermediate frames. Each of the 24 frames in a 24fps signal is replicated exactly and then shown 5 times in 1/24 of a second. This is an improved backlight (CFCL) technology that releases a whole new spectrum of colours previously not possible with standard backlight technology. A staggering 98% of required colours can be reproduced compared to about 85% with standard LCD TV. One of the most recent standards is known as RGB. RGB is evident in most set-top boxes, satellite receivers and DVD players and delivers very good results. Now, thanks to the introduction of next generation formats such as HD DVD and the HDMI connection method, a wider colour space can be achieved. This has led to a new standard being set, xvycc. DIGITAL TELEVISION Entertainment Between 2007 and 2012, TV services in the UK will go completely digital in a process called the digital switchover. The old analogue broadcast signal is being switched off and replaced with a digital signal. After this time non-digital TVs will no longer receive TV programmes.
