How to Use Noodlebib to Create a JOURNAL Citation in MLA Style

Step 1: Locate a SCHOLARLY JOURNAL article in a subscription database Database = Expanded Academic ASAP. Boolean Advanced KEYWORD search = global warming AND ice IMPORTANT: Notice the Limit: to documents with FULL TEXT.

Step 2: Display the results Make sure the Academic Journals tab is selected. Check the focus, length and type of article. Notice that the first 3 articles are short. One is a Letter to the Editor which may not be very valuable for research. The last article is lengthy and has graphics. You should select a LENGTHY article.

Step 3: Display the full text article Click on the article title in the list to display the publication information and full-text content.

Step 4: Copy/paste the bibliographic information Click SHOW DETAILS to display the author s name. Highlight the title, publication title, volume, issue, date, pages and author. Then copy (Edit > copy). Open your wordprocessing program and paste (Edit > paste) into a document. Save and keep for later. NOTE: This is an academic journal article (even though the document type is labeled as Magazine/Journal) Show details/hide details toggle button This is what the bibliographic information looks like in Expanded Academic Index The geoscience of climate and energy 3. Step 5: Go to Noodlebib and Sign In Locate the Library Home Page: http://www.santarosa.edu/library and click on Go to Noodlebib (if you already have a Noodlebib account set up)

Step 6: Click on a List Name to open it. To open an existing list of works cited, click on the list name. You should click on the name of the list you created last week that contains your book citation.

Step 7: Check the citations in the list Make sure you have selected the right list by checking the existing citation. The only citation in the list should be a book citation.

Step 8: Create a new citation to add to the list In the drop down menu (Select a citation type), select Journal (because you are creating a scholarly journal periodical citation). To add a citation to your list, click Create Citation.

Step 9: Confirm the journal type This screen asks you to confirm that you do want to cite a scholarly journal article. Make sure the article you found is NOT from a magazine.

Step 10: Identify the format of the journal article Since this is a journal article from a subscription database that you have accessed through the campus network or from home, the format is ONLINE.

Step 11: Specify other article details Since you accessed this online using the subscription database, check retrieved from an online database. This is a regular periodical article from a subscription database, select An article

Step 12: Start inputting the data Type in the journal title (use initial capitals and remove The -- if the journal title contains it). Type in the author s name and click Add.

Step 13: Type in the rest of the data 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1. Change the title words to initial capitals. 2. Type in the page numbers. You have to add an ending number so 55(5) becomes 55-9 (5 pages: 55, 56, 57, 58, 59). 3. Type in the Volume number (the number BEFORE the period in 36.2 4. Type in the Issue number (the number AFTER the period in 36.2 5. Do NOT select the month from the drop down menu unless needed. 6. Type in the publication year. 7. Type in the Database name: Expanded Academic Index 8. Leave the http:// blank 9. Select the date YOU located the article 10. Scroll to the bottom of the page and Click Check for Errors!

Step 14: Check for errors/correct errors Then generate the citation Corrected capitals on Climate and Energy. Capitalized The is ok in this case Remove month as instructed. The month should be blank

Step 15: Check your citation Your citation will now appear in your list. Check it again for accuracy. It will appear in alphabetical order either before or after your book citation.

Step 16: Share your citation Click on the Share button to share your bibliography with your instructor.

Step 17: Select the Drop Box for sharing Type in the section number of the class and locate the correct drop box. Type in your first and last name to clearly identify your work. Click Share Project

Step 18: Confirm the citation is shared The screen will show the inbox where the citation was shared. Make sure it is correct
