TEXT I When Steven Spielberg was six years old, his father took him and his three sisters to a big field near their house. It was midnight. There, they watched meteors crossing the dark sky. Spielberg included this experience in his film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In the film, a father wakes his children to watch lights from a spaceship. Steven watched a lot of TV when he was a kid. "A lot on TV scared me," says Steven. "And so did other things - like my sisters' toy clown, the trees outside my bedroom window and my dark wardrobe." Later, he put all of those things in his film Poltergeist. "As a kid, I liked being scared," says Steven. "It helped my imagination." When he was twelve, Steven wanted to make films. He made films with his father's camera. His family and friends were the 'film stars'. He also practiced special effects. With his mother's help, he cooked a red fruit dessert until it exploded. There was red fruit all over the kitchen. Then he filmed it. Steven filmed on the weekends, and on Mondays he didn't want to go to school. He liked to stay at home to edit his films. Sometimes he said he was sick. He put a thermometer next to the ceiling light and his mom believed him. This is exactly what Elliot did in the film E.T. (adapted from BAYLEY, Jane. (0.25 each) A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a film called Star Wars opened and became one of the most important films in cinema history. There has never been a film like Star Wars. The film's characters have become universal symbols of good and bad. Phrases like 'May the Force be with you' have entered the English language, and it has had a huge influence on other films. There are several reasons for the film's importance. Firstly, it used different genres in one film. Star Wars was a science fiction film but it was also an adventure film. Many of the film's ideas also came from westerns. Secondly, it was one of the first films to use computer-generated special effects successfully. Thirdly, it was one of the first big summer films. Today we call big, expensive, successful films 'blockbusters'. Most blockbusters arrive in cinemas between the months of May and September. For example, the Pirates of the Caribbean, Spider-Man and Transformers films are all summer blockbusters. Finally, Star Wars was the first film to produce merchandise. Apart from the six films and the TV series, there have also been Star Wars books, comics, magazines, DVDs, action figures, board games, video games, T-shirts, cups For all of these reasons, especially the last one, I believe Star Wars changed cinema forever. Have you ever seen the original Star Wars film? If you have, then I'm sure you'll agree with me. (from CAMPBELL, Robert et al. Beyond A2+. Student s book Pack Premium. London: Macmillan, 204. p. 85) A) Who are the stars in the 977 Star Wars movie? B) Mention two reasons why Star Wars has been so important. 4
C) What are blockbusters? D) What is some merchandise that Star Wars movies have produced? GVJ/gmf 5
